🕊️ Why Should You — or Shouldn’t You — Attend Church?

I’ve spent most of my life surrounded by the rhythms of church life.

From Sunday School and Vacation Bible School to revival meetings, baptisms, and Bible studies — I’ve seen the full spectrum of what it means to “go to church.” Church has been a regular part of my routine, my upbringing, and my community for as long as I can remember.

But here’s the truth:
It wasn’t until I surrendered my heart and life to Jesus Christ at the age of 14 that I truly understood the biblical reason for going to church.

🙋‍♂️ So Why Do We Go to Church?

Some people go because they’re trying to check the box. Others go because they feel guilty if they don’t. Some just need a little spiritual boost to get through the week.

But none of those are the right reasons.

Yes, Hebrews 10:25 reminds us:

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

But that verse is about fellowship, encouragement, and the shared strength that comes from worshiping and growing together—not about fulfilling a ritual or easing a guilty conscience.

❌ Why You Shouldn't Go to Church

Let’s be honest. If you’re only going to church because:

  • You feel obligated

  • You’re afraid God’s mad at you

  • You want to impress people

  • You need a quick spiritual fix

…then you're missing the point.

Worse, you might burn out or even begin to resent something that was never supposed to be a burden in the first place.

Going to church should never be about performance, pressure, or penance.

✅ Why You Should Go to Church

You should go because:

  • You want to grow in your faith.

  • You need to be encouraged—and to encourage others.

  • You hunger for God’s Word.

  • You recognize the power of spiritual family and corporate worship.

Church isn’t the building. Church is the body of Christ.
And when we gather, something powerful happens—we remind each other of who we are, who He is, and what He’s called us to do.

But let’s be clear: not attending church doesn't mean you've backslidden.

Jesus isn’t confined to a building, a schedule, or a pew.
He lives in us. He is the Church.

🧠 What I’ve Learned

It took me years to realize this:
Going to church for the sake of going doesn’t mean much.

But going with a heart that’s open, hungry, and ready to be part of something bigger—that’s life-giving.

And on the days I don’t go?
Jesus still walks with me. He still speaks. He still reigns.
Because He’s not just at church… He’s in me.

🕊️ Final Thought

You should go to church—not because you “have to,” but because you get to.

It’s not about religion.
It’s about relationship—with God and with others.

So whether you’re in a building this Sunday or worshiping from home, remember:
You are the Church. Jesus lives in you.
