Title: “The Hidden Cost of ‘Saving Time’: A 50-Year Decline in Reading — Secular and Sacred”

A 50-Year Reading Decline: What the Data Reveal

Over the past several decades, reading rates—both for secular books and the Bible—have declined steadily. This isn’t just nostalgia; empirical studies paint a stark reality.

  • A landmark study from the University of Florida and University College London shows a 40% drop in Americans reading daily for pleasure between 2003 and 2023, averaging a 3% decline per year Wikipedia+15The Guardian+15The Washington Post+15.

  • In 2004, 28% of Americans read for pleasure daily; by 2023, that number had fallen to 16% The Guardian.

  • Complementing this, Gallup’s data shows the average number of books read per year dropped from around 15.6 in 2016 to 12.6 in 2021. The percentage reading more than 10 books fell from 35% to 27% Sparx Services+5Gallup.com+5Medium+5.

  • Moreover, the National Endowment for the Arts reported that only 48.5% of adults read at least one book in the past year, down from 54.6% ten years earlier National Endowment for the Arts+2Master Mind Behavior+2.

Bible Reading Trends (Barna Research):

Why “Saving Time” is Stealing Reading Time

Several overlapping factors are often blamed for the decline in reading, but a central culprit remains: the drive to “save time” or streamline our attention:

Thus, the well-intentioned desire to “save time” paradoxically results in less time spent engaging with deep, enriching texts—whether secular literature or scripture.

Why Reading Still Matters — Scriptural Anchors

Hosea 4:6“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”
When we neglect reading and engaging with scripture or thoughtful books, we starve our understanding and spiritual resilience.

2 Timothy 2:15“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.”
Studying, researching, and evaluating teachings—whether in classrooms, study groups, or individually—is a calling to integrity, not convenience.

Matthew 24:26‑28“So if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’… Do not believe it…”
Discernment depends on deep familiarity with the Word. Only through careful reading can we distinguish truth from deception.

The excuse of “saving time” may feel efficient—but it is quietly eroding our reading habits. See the data.

[Secular Reading Trends]

[Bible Reading Decline]

  • Weekly Bible reading dropped from 45% in 1991 to ~33% today Barna Group.

  • In 2021, just 16% read the Bible most days; 34% read weekly but half read less than twice yearly Barna Group.

  • “No time” is a leading reason for skipping scripture reading Institute For Bible Reading.

[Main Underlying Cause: “Saving Time”]

[Scriptural Emphasis on Reading]

  • Hosea 4:6 – Ignorance brings destruction.

  • 2 Timothy 2:15 – Diligence in studying must not yield to convenience.

  • Matthew 24:26–28 – Falsehoods are exposed through discerned reading.

[Conclusion & Call to Action]
Encourage intentional, disciplined reading—perhaps setting aside even small daily time—but consistent. Share why it matters and use the provided scriptures to anchor readers back to roots of wisdom.

🎉 A Birthday, A Ministry, A Mission: 67 Years of Life & 28 Years of Service 🎉

This Sunday, August 17, I’ll be celebrating my 67th birthday—a milestone that fills my heart with gratitude to God. 🎂 But this celebration is more than candles on a cake; it represents a life poured out in service to Christ and to others.

For 28 years of ministry, the Lord has given me the privilege of preaching, teaching, encouraging, and serving people across nations. For 21 years, my family and I ministered in Italy, where we saw God’s hand at work in ways that humbled us daily. Today, our journey has brought us to the Philippines, where we continue to serve as missionaries—bringing the light of Christ to communities that desperately need hope. 🌍

As I look back, I see God’s faithfulness in every step of the way. And as I look forward, I see opportunities—big opportunities—for impact, outreach, and transformation.

🌟 Why This Birthday Is Different

This year, instead of asking for gifts or personal celebrations, I’m asking for something far greater:

👉 Support our GoFundMe campaign: https://t.co/nuxLMx8dMS

Your support will help us:

  • ✝️ Share the Gospel with more people who may never have heard it

  • 🍞 Provide hope and help to families in need

  • 🌱 Plant seeds that will grow into strong communities of faith

  • 🙏 Equip future leaders for the Kingdom of God

Every dollar given becomes a tool in God’s hands—helping us reach people we may never meet, but who are precious in His sight.

💬 A Personal Invitation

Friends, I’m trusting God for the rest. If He has blessed you through my ministry in some way, or if you simply want to be part of the ongoing story of lives changed by Christ, I humbly invite you to celebrate this milestone with me by giving, praying, and sharing.

Let’s make this birthday not just about one man’s life, but about a mission to touch lives for eternity.

🙌 Closing Thoughts

At 67, I feel both grateful for the years behind me and excited for the road ahead. Thank you for standing with us, whether through prayer, encouragement, or support. Together, we can continue to make a difference—one life, one family, one community at a time.

To God be the glory!

📖 Upcoming Release Announcement — Late August / Early September

God’s Been There All the Time

Finding the God Who Never Let Go
By James Langston

Every once in a while, a book comes along that doesn’t just tell a story — it steps right into your own life, sits across from you, and begins speaking to the deepest places of your heart. God’s Been There All the Time is one of those books.

This powerful and poignant narrative follows the journey of Selah Morrison, a woman whose life has been marked by both joy and deep heartbreak. From moments when God felt so close she could almost hear His whisper, to seasons where His presence seemed like a distant memory, Selah’s path mirrors the struggles so many of us face.

But this is not simply her story — it is a testimony of God’s relentless pursuit, His patient love, and His unwavering presence, even when we are convinced we’ve wandered too far.

A Glimpse into the Storyline

Through beautifully crafted storytelling, James Langston takes readers into Selah’s world — the high points, the breaking points, and the surprising turns she never saw coming. We meet people who shape her journey, some for a moment and others for a lifetime, each playing a part in the larger tapestry God is weaving.

In these pages, you will:

  • Walk with Selah through seasons of doubt and discovery.

  • Witness divine appointments that seem ordinary at first, but carry eternal weight.

  • Experience the “silent work” of God, moving behind the scenes in ways only hindsight can reveal.

  • See the power of prayer, even when the answers feel delayed.

  • Encounter grace that comes not when we’ve earned it, but when we’ve needed it most.

Why This Book Matters

In a world that measures worth by success, possessions, or public approval, God’s Been There All the Time invites readers to consider a deeper truth: The God who created you has never left you — not for a single second. Whether you’ve been running from Him, searching for Him, or struggling to believe He cares, this book is a reminder that you have always been seen, known, and loved.

James Langston writes with a voice that is both tender and unflinching — tender enough to remind you of God’s mercy, unflinching enough to speak truth into places you’ve been avoiding.

Mark Your Calendar

God’s Been There All the Time will be available on Amazon in late August or early September, in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle editions.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from every sale go directly to Pilgrim Outreach Ministries’ missionary and global efforts in the Philippines — transforming lives with both the message of the Gospel and the ministry of compassion.

Final Word

If you’ve ever wondered where God was during your hardest moments…
If you’ve questioned whether He still has a plan for your life…
If you’ve doubted whether His love could really cover all that you’ve done or been through…

This book is for you.

Because the truth is simple — and life-changing:
God’s been there all the time.

🌍 Headline: Feed & Uplift 1,000 Families — A Global Call to Action That Starts With You

Imagine this…
A mother tucks her children into bed tonight with empty stomachs, whispering promises she’s not sure she can keep. A father, strong in faith but worn from hardship, prays silently for a miracle before morning. And in neighborhoods across the world, families sit in darkened rooms, not because they prefer the stillness… but because the light bill is months overdue.

At The Living Word Center, we believe those moments of despair are exactly where God calls His people to step in. And right now, through our Feed & Uplift 1,000 Families campaign, you can help us do exactly that.

Why This Matters — More Than a Meal

Hunger is not just about food—it’s about dignity, hope, and the belief that someone, somewhere, cares enough to notice.
When you give, you’re not simply placing a plate of food in front of a child… you’re placing hope in their hands. You’re sending the message: You matter. You are seen. You are loved.

Our Goal

  • Feed and support 1,000 families facing severe hardship.

  • Provide nutritional staples such as rice, bread, cooking oil, and canned goods.

  • Offer spiritual encouragement and prayer, reminding families that God’s love hasn’t forgotten them.

  • Deliver not only sustenance for the body… but renewal for the soul.

Why We’re Asking Now

The need is urgent. Every day we wait, more children go to bed hungry. More parents skip meals so their kids can eat. More hearts lose hope.
But together—globally—we can reverse that trend.

How You Can Help

✅ Donate directly via our GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/0dc546ae
✅ Share this mission with your friends, church, and community.
✅ Pray for the families we serve, and for the hands and hearts delivering aid.

A Seed That Multiplies

In God’s economy, the smallest seed can become a forest. A single meal can open the door to a relationship with Christ. Your gift today could be the one that changes the trajectory of an entire household.

This is not charity. This is Kingdom work.
And in Kingdom work, every contribution matters. Whether it’s $5 or $500, whether you’re giving from New York or Nairobi, you’re part of a global network of compassion that transcends borders.

Join us. Feed a family. Change a life.

🌍 Cherish Your Church – Redeem the Time

If you have a church—a place where your mind, body, soul, and spirit are nourished—then you are blessed beyond measure. In an age when faith is often challenged, when values are shifting, and when distractions compete for our every waking moment, the local church remains a vital anchor for God’s people.

The church is not simply a building with four walls and a roof. It is a living, breathing fellowship of believers—gathered in the name of Jesus, united by His Word, and strengthened by His Spirit. In this place, we find worship that lifts our hearts, teaching that renews our minds, fellowship that restores our joy, and prayer that heals our wounds.

Ephesians 5:16 reminds us to “redeem the time, because the days are evil.” This is not a casual suggestion—it’s an urgent call. The days we live in are full of moral compromise, spiritual apathy, and increasing hostility toward the truth of God’s Word. Now, more than ever, we must hold fast to the community of faith God has placed us in.

That means:

  • Attending faithfully—not just when it’s convenient.

  • Supporting your church with your gifts, service, and resources.

  • Praying daily for your pastor and leaders, that they would have wisdom, courage, and strength.

  • Encouraging your fellow believers, because the Christian journey is not meant to be walked alone.

When you choose to plant yourself in a local body of believers, you are declaring to the world: “I will not go it alone. I will stand with the Body of Christ. I will be part of what God is doing here and now.”

Do not underestimate the impact of your presence, your prayers, and your partnership. The local church is where disciples are made, lives are changed, and the light of the Gospel shines in dark places.

If you already have a church home, treasure it. If you do not, pray for God to lead you to one that teaches the Bible faithfully, loves people genuinely, and serves the Lord wholeheartedly.

The time is short. The work is great. The fellowship is precious.
Let us redeem the time—together.

📖 The Arrogancy of Religion (2nd Edition) — Now Available Worldwide

The wait is over. James Langston’s latest work, The Arrogancy of Religion (2nd Edition), has officially been released and is now available on Amazon in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle eBook formats. This isn’t just another Christian title to add to your bookshelf—it’s a direct, Spirit-led challenge to the Church, its leaders, and every believer who desires to walk in truth rather than tradition.

WHAT is the book about?

At its core, The Arrogancy of Religion confronts the quiet but deadly drift from relationship with Christ into ritual, from Spirit-led obedience into self-assured performance. Langston paints a sobering picture: it is possible to be active in ministry yet distant from the Master, to know the language of faith but miss its life-giving power.

In twelve compelling chapters, the author exposes the hidden pride that can take root in religious systems—pride that measures success by numbers, degrees, and platforms rather than by humility, repentance, and obedience to God’s Word. Each page invites the reader to re-examine their walk with Christ in light of Scripture and the example of the early Church.

WHEN is it available?

Now. The book has been released in 2025 for such a time as this—an age when the Church faces both unprecedented opportunities and sobering compromises. It speaks directly to our moment in history, offering prophetic clarity and hope for renewal.

WHERE can you get it?

You can order your copy today on Amazon, choosing from paperback, hardcover, or Kindle eBook editions to suit your reading preference.

WHY should you read it?

Because the stakes are too high to ignore. The author writes not as an outside critic, but as a seasoned pastor, missionary, and fellow laborer in the Gospel. His aim is not to condemn, but to call believers back to the heart of Christ.

This is for:

Leaders who need a renewed vision rooted in Scripture.

Believers who are tired of shallow religion and hungry for authentic faith.

Churches seeking revival, not just rebranding.

The book offers both correction and encouragement, urging us to drop the armor of pride and clothe ourselves in the humility of Jesus.

HOW does it guide you?

Langston takes you step by step through biblical truths, historical lessons, and modern-day realities. You’ll explore:

The difference between performance and transformation.

How misplaced priorities rob the Church of its witness.

Why revival begins with repentance, not marketing.

What it truly means to follow Jesus beyond the walls of religion.

By the final chapter, you will not only understand the dangers of religious arrogance—you’ll be equipped to reject it in your own life and help others do the same.

A Closing Word

The Arrogancy of Religion (2nd Edition) is more than a book—it’s a call to awaken. It’s a mirror for the soul, a trumpet sounding in the spiritual night, and a roadmap back to the feet of Jesus.

📚 Order today and join the growing number of believers worldwide who are choosing authenticity over appearance, transformation over tradition, and Christ over mere religion.

The Five-Fold Ministry in Crisis: Returning to God’s Blueprint

Ephesians 4:11–12 | Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers

"And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ." — Ephesians 4:11–12

The five-fold ministry was never meant to be a hierarchy for spiritual celebrities. It was never intended as a platform for self-promotion, wealth accumulation, or personal branding.

It was designed by Christ for the maturing of the Church—to equip Believers, to lead them into deeper discipleship, and to build a spiritually strong and unified Body. But something has gone terribly wrong.

❓ Are There Still Apostles Today?

This question stirs debate across denominations. Biblically, the original apostles were eyewitnesses of Christ's resurrection, personally commissioned by Jesus. However, many today claim the apostolic mantle—not to suffer for the gospel, but to reign with authority, often above reproach or accountability.

While apostolic function—church planting, pioneering ministry, and overseeing doctrinal integrity—still exists, the apostolic title has often become a crown instead of a calling. We must be cautious. If “apostles” today are seeking power instead of pouring themselves out, something’s off.

🔮 Prophets and Prophecy: A Gift Misunderstood

Prophecy is perhaps the most misused and misunderstood of the five-fold offices. In Scripture, prophecy was:

  • Rooted in holiness

  • Measured by truth

  • Verified by time

  • And never self-serving

But now? Many "prophetic voices" flood the internet with vague, recycled, emotion-driven words—almost always predicting blessing, breakthrough, or promotion. Rarely do these voices warn, convict, or call to repentance.

Even worse, some treat prophecy like a lottery ticket: “Sow this seed and receive your word.” This is not the Spirit of God. It’s deception, and it's spreading like wildfire through the ranks of the undiscerning.

🎙️ What About Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers?

Evangelists are now being mistaken for motivational speakers.
Pastors are managing platforms more than shepherding souls.
Teachers are replaced with influencers and entertainers.

Yet God’s Word is clear:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” — Hosea 4:6

These roles were never meant to be glamorous—they are spiritual callings with eternal weight. When the message shifts from salvation to self-help, from sin to success, from holiness to hype… we’ve abandoned the gospel.

📖 The Cure? The Word of God.

Many of these issues stem from one core deficiency: Biblical illiteracy.
If Believers would devote themselves to studying the Word—truly studying it—we’d see deception lose its grip.

The Bible warns us of false apostles (2 Corinthians 11:13), false prophets (Matthew 7:15), and false teachers (2 Peter 2:1). But how can we recognize them if we never read the warnings?

Satan doesn’t need to pull people into witchcraft or atheism.
All he needs to do is distort Scripture just enough that it sounds spiritual… but isn’t saving.

🕯️ What Now?

Let this be a call to every Believer:
✅ Test every spirit.
✅ Search the Scriptures.
✅ Pursue Christ, not charisma.
✅ Listen for God’s voice—but verify it in His Word.

Jesus gave us a five-fold model for maturity—not manipulation.
Let’s return to the blueprint. Let’s call out deception in love.
Let’s build again—not on personalities, but on Christ alone.

🇺🇸 Who Can We Trust Anymore?

A Question Echoing Across a Nation—and the Only Answer That Holds.

Across dinner tables and digital threads…
In sanctuaries and schools, courtrooms and communities…
The same aching question keeps rising:

“Who can we trust anymore?”

It’s the question beneath the politics, beyond the news cycle, and deeper than social unrest. It’s more than skepticism about leaders—it’s a collective longing for something true… and someone we can count on.

We’ve watched systems we once respected break down.
We’ve heard the voices we once trusted shift with the wind.
We’ve seen even the Church fracture under the weight of compromise and confusion.

People are weary of deception.
Tired of smoke and mirrors.
Hungry for something real.

And here’s the truth that many are missing:

“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”
—Psalm 118:8

🌍 Trust in the Unshakable

In a world that no longer agrees on truth,
In a culture that trades convictions for clicks,
There still remains a foundation that cannot be moved
The Word of God.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God shall stand forever.”
—Isaiah 40:8

The question isn’t just, “Who do we trust?”
The better question is, “Have we forgotten Who has never failed?”

When governments disappoint…
When religious leaders fall…
When family members turn…
God remains faithful.

💔 Why We’re So Disillusioned

Let’s be honest—many of us were raised to believe that our systems, traditions, and churches were stable, trustworthy places.
But for too many, those have become the very arenas of betrayal.

Some have turned from God because of people who claimed to represent Him but lived contrary to His Word.
Others have been led by influencers who cared more about followers than faithfulness.

This is why Jesus didn’t say, “Follow Christians.”
He said, “Follow Me.” (Matthew 4:19)

🔥 The Invitation Still Stands

God is not shaken by our disillusionment.
He sees through the fog and chaos of our times and still whispers:

“Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
—Matthew 11:28

This isn’t religion.
It’s not about denominations, rituals, or political affiliation.
This is about relationship—with the only One who is always true, always just, and always good.

🕊️ Time to Realign

Now, more than ever, we need to:

  • Return to the Bible, not public opinion.

  • Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance, not cultural trends.

  • Anchor our lives in Christ, not the crumbling institutions of this world.

God’s promises weren’t written for perfect times—they were written for times like these.

He hasn’t changed.
He hasn’t left.
He’s still reaching.

✝️ The Answer Is—and Always Will Be—Jesus

You may be wondering where to turn, who to believe, what’s next for your life, or this nation.

The answer is simple:
Turn to the One who already holds tomorrow.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
—Hebrews 13:8

🏃‍♂️ Haven’t You Been Running Too Long?

🕊️ It's Time to Come Home.

For some, running looks like rebellion. For others, it looks like religion.

Some run because of guilt.
Others run because of grief.
But many are simply running—away from truth, away from love, away from the God who formed them.

But let me remind you of something life-changing:

God hasn’t stopped calling you.

You may have ignored His whispers.
You may have tried to drown out His conviction with distractions.
You may have even convinced yourself that your chance is gone…

But if you're reading this right now—He’s still reaching.

The world may have left you broken.
Religion may have left you bitter.
But Jesus has never left you.
His arms are still wide open, and His heart is still full of mercy.

✝️ The Lord Has a Plan for Your Life

You were not made to drift aimlessly or survive on empty spirituality.

There is purpose behind your pain.
There is a plan behind your wandering.
But you won’t discover it through status, popularity, or good intentions.
You’ll only find it in surrender—through Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour of the world.

Salvation is not about fixing yourself first.
It’s not about earning God’s approval.
It’s about admitting, "Lord, I can’t do this alone. I need You."

📖 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Jesus is not offering religion.
He’s offering rest.
Real, lasting, eternal rest for your soul.

Don't wait until you're “ready.”
Don't delay because others mock your faith.
And please—don’t let what’s popular but biblically wrong keep your name out of the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Eternity is not a fairy tale.
Hell is not a myth.
And Heaven is not reserved for the self-righteous.
It’s for the redeemed—those who say yes to Jesus.

🙏 A Prayer of Surrender

If you’re ready to stop running and start living—pray this simple but powerful prayer:

👉 Repeat the Prayer of Salvation here

If you prayed that prayer from your heart—congratulations!
You’ve just made the most important decision of your life.

📬 Tell someone today!
We’d love to hear your story, walk with you, and celebrate your new life in Christ.
Please email us at: pom_ministry@yahoo.com

🔥 The Truth Most Churches Won’t Tell You

We are not okay.
We are not fine just the way we are.
We are estranged from God by nature and by choice.

But through Christ, that distance is erased.
Through the Cross, our sin is forgiven.
And through surrender, we become sons and daughters—not strangers.

🎯 Your running ends where your surrender begins.

So we plead with you today:

Come home.
Come to Christ.
Come and live.

🌍 A Gospel Too Big for Borders

Why the Church Must Reclaim a Global, Missionary Mindset

Posted by Pilgrim Outreach Ministries | pomitaly.homestead.com

Unless you have a worldview—a heart shaped by the Great Commission and a mind consumed by the heartbeat of Heaven—you will have very little interest in reaching those in distant lands.

Let that sink in.

We live in a time where technology can take us across oceans in seconds, but many believers remain spiritually grounded in their own comfort zones.
We speak often of revival, power, and purpose—but how can we claim to walk with Christ while ignoring His final command?

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
— Mark 16:15

This wasn’t a suggestion.
It wasn’t reserved for pastors, missionaries, or church boards.
It was for all of us.

The Mandate, Not a Movement

The gospel is not a trend.
It’s not an optional outreach event.
It is the mandate of Heaven—to reach every race, every tongue, every tribe, and every nation.

If our faith doesn’t reach beyond our front doors,
if it doesn’t break through our political barriers,
if it doesn’t move us to pray, give, and go
then we have misunderstood the very mission of Christ.

God never intended the Church to be a fortress of comfort.
He intended it to be a launch pad
a sending center for soldiers of the cross
to take His message into the highways and hedges, across rivers and borders, and into every corner of this earth.

Time Is Short. Eternity Is Not.

We’re not just running out of time—we’re already late.

While we argue over church carpets and titles,
millions are dying without ever hearing the name of Jesus.

This isn’t just about foreign missions—it’s about eternal destinies.

It’s about young girls in India being trafficked while never knowing their worth in Christ.
It’s about elderly men in North Africa who’ve bowed to idols their entire lives because no one ever told them about the cross.
It’s about children in remote islands who’ve never heard a single Bible verse.

The question is not, “Should I be involved?”
It’s “How can I not be?”

Your Role in the Great Commission

Not everyone is called to move overseas—but we are all called to move.

  • Move in prayer.

  • Move in giving.

  • Move in sending.

  • Move in compassion.

  • Move in obedience.

The Kingdom needs your voice. Your time. Your testimony. Your generosity.
You can make an eternal difference from wherever you are.

At Pilgrim Outreach Ministries, we’ve devoted ourselves to this global assignment—to preach, to reach, to teach, and to disciple wherever God sends us.

And we invite you to partner with us in this holy urgency.
