Not My Will — But Thine Be Done

In Luke 22:42, Jesus prayed one of the most powerful and revealing prayers ever recorded: “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

Those words reveal something every Christian must eventually confront—the tension between our will and God’s will.

As believers, we must be careful that we do not unintentionally place ourselves—or others—on the opposite side of Truth. Jesus Christ declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Truth is not simply an idea; it is a Person.

It is not wrong for Christians to disagree about matters of opinion or perspective. But it is dangerous—and spiritually damaging—when we begin to prefer our will above God’s will.

Submission and surrender are two of the most difficult disciplines in the Christian life. Deep within us is the desire to control outcomes, manage circumstances, and direct our own path. Sometimes we even convince ourselves that we are doing God’s will when in reality we are protecting our own.

But the Christian life was never meant to be lived that way.

Scripture reminds us that we are “in this world, but not of this world.” Our calling is different. Our allegiance is different. Our priorities must be aligned with heaven rather than the shifting values of this present age.

God will warn us, guide us, and correct us—but He will not override our will. The choices we make still matter. The paths we choose still carry consequences. Yet God remains faithful to point us toward His purposes and His truth.

The question that echoes through every generation remains the same:

“Who is on the Lord’s side?” (Exodus 32:26)

May our answer always be the same as Christ’s prayer in Gethsemane:
“Not my will, but Thine be done.”
