🎮 THERE’S GOT TO BE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS
When the Game Ends, the Screen Goes Dark, and You’re Still Searching
Years ago, one of the most successful athletes in American sports said something that has stayed with me.
In a 2005 60 Minutes interview, then-New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was only 27 years old and had already won three Super Bowls. Yet despite the money, fame, achievement, and championships, Brady wondered aloud why he still felt there was something greater out there for him:
“I think, God, it’s got to be more than this.”
When interviewer Steve Kroft asked him what the answer was, Brady replied that he wished he knew. CBS later revisited that remarkable exchange.
Think about that.
Three Super Bowl championships.
Millions of dollars.
Worldwide recognition.
Success most athletes could only dream about.
And still—
THERE’S GOT TO BE MORE THAN THIS.
I wholeheartedly agree.
🎮 MAYBE YOUR STADIUM ISN’T GILLETTE—MAYBE IT’S ONLINE
Today I want to talk especially to the gamer.
The streamer.
The person whose online world begins shortly after waking up and sometimes doesn't end until well after everybody else has gone to bed.
You know the language:
AFK.
GG.
GGWP.
Noob.
PvP.
AOE.
Buff.
Camping.
Aggro.
K/D Ratio.
Battle Pass.
And dozens—perhaps hundreds—of other words and abbreviations that make perfect sense inside the gaming world.
Maybe you've spent thousands of hours leveling characters.
Grinding.
Unlocking achievements.
Building.
Competing.
Winning.
Losing.
Respawning.
Upgrading.
Climbing rankings.
Completing quests.
Buying skins.
Joining clans.
Talking on Discord.
Watching streams.
Posting clips.
Scrolling social media between matches.
And none of those things, by themselves, necessarily make you a terrible person.
I'm not here to tell you that owning a gaming console is a sin.
I'm asking a much bigger question:
IS THIS REALLY ALL YOU WANT YOUR LIFE TO BECOME?
⏰ HOURS BECOME DAYS—DAYS BECOME YEARS
That's the part we don't always notice.
You say:
“One more game.”
Then another.
And another.
One more video.
One more scroll.
One more post.
One more conversation.
One more level.
One more battle.
One more hour.
Suddenly it's 2:00 in the morning.
Then tomorrow—
repeat.
Monday.
Tuesday.
Wednesday.
Thursday.
Friday.
Saturday.
Sunday.
Week after week.
Month after month.
Year after year.
And one day you may look up and realize:
YOU WERE SO BUSY PLAYING LIFE THAT YOU FORGOT TO LIVE IT.
📱 SOCIAL MEDIA HAS ITS OWN VERSION OF THE GAME
Maybe gaming isn't your thing.
Maybe your game is social media.
Post.
Check.
Scroll.
Refresh.
Comment.
React.
Check again.
Who liked it?
Who shared it?
Who followed me?
Who unfollowed me?
How many views?
How many subscribers?
How many comments?
How many followers?
And without realizing it, your sense of worth can begin depending upon numbers on a screen.
But here's something worth remembering:
FOLLOWERS ARE NOT THE SAME THING AS FRIENDS.
Views aren't necessarily relationships.
Likes aren't necessarily love.
Comments aren't necessarily community.
And being connected to everybody can still leave you feeling terribly alone.
🕹️ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FINALLY WIN?
This is where Brady's statement becomes so interesting.
He won.
That's the point.
The question didn't come from somebody who never reached his goal.
It came from somebody who had already reached extraordinary goals and still wondered whether there was something more.
That should make us think.
Suppose you finally reach the highest rank.
Then what?
Suppose you acquire every skin.
Then what?
Suppose you beat every boss.
Then what?
Suppose your channel reaches a million subscribers.
Then what?
Suppose you become famous.
Then what?
Suppose you become wealthy.
Then what?
Eventually every earthly achievement encounters the same question:
“WHAT’S NEXT?”
😄 WAIT FOR IT...
So if you're tired of hearing:
AFK...
GG...
GGWP...
Noob...
PvP...
AOE...
Buff...
Camping...
Aggro...
K/D Ratio...
Battle Pass...
and everything else—
allow me to introduce you to...
Wait for it...
✝️ JESUS CHRIST.
No respawn required.
No subscription fee.
No Battle Pass.
No DLC.
No loot box.
No rank requirement.
No algorithm.
No follower count.
No elite status necessary.
Just you—
exactly where you are—
meeting the One who already knows everything about you.
❤️ JESUS ISN’T ANOTHER PRODUCT I’M TRYING TO SELL YOU
I'm not asking you merely to add Jesus to your collection of interests.
Jesus isn't another app.
He's not another influencer.
He's not another motivational speaker.
He's not somebody you follow for inspirational quotes when you're having a bad day.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life...” — John 14:6
That is an enormous claim.
And it deserves investigation.
Jesus also said:
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” — John 10:10
Did you catch that word?
LIFE.
Not merely existence.
Not merely passing time.
Not merely filling hours.
Life.
🧠 “BUT PASTOR, GAMING IS HOW I RELAX.”
Fine.
I'm not trying to confiscate your controller.
Relaxation is important.
Recreation has its place.
Entertainment has its place.
But something can have a legitimate place in your life and still become unhealthy when it takes over the whole house.
Ask yourself:
Is gaming controlling me?
Am I neglecting sleep?
Am I neglecting school or work?
Am I neglecting my spouse?
Am I neglecting my children?
Have real friendships been replaced almost entirely by online interaction?
Do I become angry when someone interrupts my gaming?
Am I spending money I cannot afford?
Have I stopped exercising?
Have I stopped going outside?
Have I stopped reading?
And Christian—
has gaming taken time that once belonged to God?
Those are questions only you can answer.
📖 YOU HAVE ONE LIFE
Scripture says:
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
Your days are numbered.
So are mine.
That isn't depressing.
IT MAKES TODAY VALUABLE.
You cannot save today's unused hours and withdraw them when you're 70.
Once today is gone—
it's gone.
And unlike a game:
THERE IS NO SAVE FILE FOR YESTERDAY.
You cannot reload age 16.
You cannot replay age 21.
You cannot restart age 30.
You cannot return to your children's childhood after they're grown.
Real life keeps moving.
🎯 YOU WERE CREATED FOR SOMETHING GREATER THAN CONSUMPTION
You were not created merely to wake up—
consume content—
play games—
scroll—
eat—
sleep—
and repeat.
You were created to know God.
To love.
To serve.
To build.
To learn.
To create.
To help.
To work.
To form relationships.
To encourage people.
To discover gifts God has placed within you.
To make a difference in somebody else's life.
And above everything—
TO KNOW JESUS CHRIST.
🌍 THERE IS AN ENTIRE WORLD OUTSIDE YOUR SCREEN
Somebody needs encouragement.
Somebody needs friendship.
Somebody needs mentoring.
Somebody needs food.
Somebody needs prayer.
Somebody needs help.
Somebody needs to hear the Gospel.
There are children who need adults willing to invest in them.
Families who need assistance.
Communities that need volunteers.
Churches that need workers.
Missionaries who need partners.
People who desperately need someone to notice them.
And perhaps you've been asking:
“What's my purpose?”
Maybe discovering purpose begins by putting down the controller long enough to look around.
✝️ JESUS OFFERS SOMETHING NO GAME CAN GIVE YOU
A game can entertain you.
Jesus can transform you.
A game can give you an achievement.
Jesus can give you forgiveness.
A game can give you a virtual community.
Jesus can bring you into the family of God.
A game can give you another life on the screen.
JESUS OFFERS ETERNAL LIFE.
John 3:16 says:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
You can win every game you ever play and still lose what matters most.
Jesus asked:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36
Or perhaps we might ask our generation:
What does it profit you to conquer every virtual world while neglecting your own soul?
🎮 MAYBE IT'S TIME TO GO AFK
Gamers know what that means:
AWAY FROM KEYBOARD.
Maybe somebody reading this needs to go AFK for a while.
Put down the controller.
Turn off the computer.
Silence the notifications.
Walk outside.
Sit somewhere quiet.
Open a Bible.
Start with the Gospel of John.
And say:
“Jesus, if You are who the Bible says You are, help me know You.”
No performance.
No religious vocabulary required.
No pretending.
Just seek Him.
🙏 YOU MAY DISCOVER WHAT YOU’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR
Perhaps beneath all the gaming, scrolling, posting, chatting, achieving, buying, competing, and entertaining yourself is a question you've never said aloud:
“THERE’S GOT TO BE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS... RIGHT?”
Yes.
I believe there is.
And I'm not going to point you toward another game.
Another platform.
Another influencer.
Another self-help program.
Another temporary distraction.
I'm going to point you toward a Person:
JESUS CHRIST.
🙏 LET US PRAY
Heavenly Father,
Someone reading this may be tired.
Not physically tired—
but tired inside.
They've played the games.
Watched the videos.
Scrolled the feeds.
Chased the achievements.
Talked in the chats.
Collected the followers.
Yet somewhere deep inside they still wonder:
“Is this all there is?”
Lord, help them discover that life has meaning beyond a screen.
Help those whose gaming or social-media habits have become unhealthy recognize it honestly.
Give them wisdom and balance.
Restore neglected relationships.
Restore conversation.
Restore purpose.
Restore curiosity.
Restore time.
And most importantly—
reveal Jesus Christ to them.
Let someone put down the controller, silence the phone, open Your Word, and begin the greatest journey of their life:
KNOWING YOU.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
🕹️ BEFORE YOU START ANOTHER GAME...
Just answer one question.
Not for me.
For yourself.
IS THERE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS?
Tom Brady had already reached a level of professional success almost nobody experiences when he publicly wondered essentially the same thing.
Maybe you've wondered it too.
If so—
don't silence the question with another game.
Don't bury it beneath another hundred videos.
Don't scroll until the feeling disappears.
Investigate it.
Open your Bible.
Look at Jesus.
And perhaps tonight—
GO AFK WITH THE WORLD...
AND SPEND SOME TIME WITH GOD.
Because there really is more to life than this.
And His name is—
✝️ JESUS CHRIST.
