📖 WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!
When Life Leaves You Without Answers, God Has Not Left You Without Hope.
Featuring the 2nd Edition of What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do by James Langston
Scriptural Foundation:
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
HAVE YOU EVER REACHED A PLACE WHERE YOU SIMPLY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?
I have.
And if you've lived long enough, chances are you have, too.
There are moments in life when the answers don't come easily. Moments when you've prayed, cried, waited, searched the Scriptures, sought counsel, and done everything you know to do.
Yet, nothing seems to change.
The bills are still due. The doctor's report hasn't improved. The marriage is struggling. The children aren't listening. The doors you expected God to open remain firmly closed.
And sometimes, the most difficult part isn't what you're going through.
It's not knowing what you're supposed to do next.
That's why I wrote What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do, and why I believed the message deserved to be expanded in this Second Edition.
Because somebody, somewhere, right now, is standing at a crossroads, whispering a prayer that sounds something like this:
"Lord, I've done everything I know to do. Now what?"
Friend, if that's you, I want to talk to you.
SOMETIMES GOD DOES HIS GREATEST WORK WHEN WE HAVE RUN OUT OF ANSWERS
One of the most difficult lessons I've learned during more than five decades of walking with the Lord is that faith doesn't always mean knowing what God is going to do next.
Sometimes faith means trusting Him when you haven't the slightest idea what comes next.
Think about Abraham.
God told him to leave his country, his family, and everything familiar, and go to a land that He would show him.
Hebrews 11:8 tells us that Abraham obeyed, "not knowing whither he went."
Did you catch that?
He obeyed without knowing where he was going!
Now, that's faith.
Consider Moses standing before the Red Sea. The Egyptian army was behind him. The sea was before him. Mountains surrounded him.
There was no apparent escape route.
But God hadn't run out of options simply because Moses had.
And neither has He run out of options for you.
📚 A BOOK WRITTEN FOR THE WEARY, THE WAITING, AND THE WONDERING
What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do (2nd Edition) isn't another book promising that every problem will disappear if you follow a handful of religious steps.
Life doesn't work that way.
And neither does genuine Christian faith.
Instead, through twelve transformational chapters, I share biblical principles, personal reflections, practical encouragement, and lessons drawn from the experiences of people who faced circumstances far beyond their understanding.
This expanded edition includes additional stories, reflective questions, and biblical examples.
Throughout its pages, we explore how to:
Find clarity in confusion when everything around you seems uncertain.
Trust God in His silence when heaven seems unusually quiet.
Take small steps of obedience without demanding to see the entire journey.
Recognize divine redirection when your plans don't unfold as expected.
Exchange panic for peace by surrendering what you cannot control.
Find strength to continue when quitting seems easier than persevering.
From "Hitting Rock Bottom—Now What?" to "You Were Never Meant to Quit," these chapters speak to real struggles faced by real people.
People like you.
People like me.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING TO TRUST THE ONE WHO DOES
Here's a truth I want you to remember long after you've finished reading this article:
YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO—WHEN YOU KNOW THE ONE WHO DOES.
That isn't an excuse for doing nothing.
It isn't an invitation to abandon responsibility, ignore wise counsel, or sit around waiting for something miraculous to happen.
Rather, it's a reminder that our understanding is limited, but God's wisdom is not.
Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours.
Sometimes His answer is, "Move."
Sometimes it's, "Wait."
Sometimes it's, "Let go."
And sometimes the next step is simply to keep doing what is right until He makes the next direction clear.
The absence of an immediate answer is not proof of the absence of God.
A PERSONAL WORD FROM MY HEART TO YOURS
As a retired United States Navy veteran, husband, father, pastor, missionary, and author, I've encountered my share of situations that didn't come with instructions.
I've experienced uncertainty, disappointment, delays, and decisions that required more faith than I thought I possessed.
And even now, as my wife and I continue our missionary journey here in the Philippines, there are things we must trust God to accomplish that are far beyond our present resources and abilities.
Do we know every detail of what lies ahead?
Absolutely not.
Do we have every answer?
Not even close.
But I've learned something along the way.
Not knowing what tomorrow holds doesn't prevent me from trusting the God who holds tomorrow.
And that's the heart behind this book.
I didn't write it because I've figured everything out.
I wrote it because I've learned that you can keep walking with God even when you cannot see around the next bend.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT
Maybe today you're asking, "Lord, what do I do now?"
Perhaps you've asked that question a hundred times.
I cannot promise that every question will be answered tomorrow.
I cannot promise that the road ahead will be easy.
But I can point you toward the One who promises never to forsake His children.
Psalm 37:23 declares:
"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way."
Notice that Scripture speaks of steps.
Not the entire staircase.
Not the complete journey.
Steps.
So, if all you can see today is the next step, take it in faith.
And when you reach that place, trust God for the next one.
You may not know what to do. But you can know whom to trust.
And that, my friend, makes all the difference.
🙏 A PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO
Heavenly Father,
Someone reading these words is struggling with a decision, a disappointment, or a situation that seems impossible to resolve.
They've exhausted their strength, their ideas, and perhaps even their patience.
Lord, remind them that Your wisdom has no limits.
Where there is confusion, grant clarity. Where there is fear, provide peace. Where there is discouragement, renew hope. And where there is uncertainty, give them the courage to take the next faithful step.
Help them trust You, even when they cannot understand what You are doing.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
