TO EVERY ATHLETE, EVERYWHERE: SOMEONE IS PRAYING FOR YOU!

Beyond the Championships, Contracts, Cameras, and Crowds—We See the Person Behind the Uniform

Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International | A Personal Message to Athletes Around the World

Scriptural Foundation: James 5:16 (KJV)

"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."

THIS MESSAGE IS FOR YOU—YES, YOU!

To every professional athlete, amateur competitor, college player, high school athlete, aspiring champion, retired competitor, and individual who has ever stepped onto a field, court, track, rink, or into an arena:

I WANT YOU TO KNOW SOMETHING TODAY.

SOMEONE IS PRAYING FOR YOU!

Not because you scored the winning touchdown.

Not because you hit the game-winning shot.

Not because you won a championship, signed a multimillion-dollar contract, broke a world record, or became an international celebrity.

And certainly not because we expect anything from you in return.

WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE A HUMAN BEING—AND YOUR LIFE MATTERS FAR MORE THAN YOUR PERFORMANCE!

For many years, athletes have occupied a special place in my heart and prayers.

In fact, I have a number of athletes whom I personally pray for every night.

Some are internationally recognized names.

Others are not.

Some have reached the pinnacle of their professions.

Others may never appear on television, sign an endorsement contract, or hear thousands of people cheering their names.

But that doesn't matter to me.

GOD DOESN'T NEED TO SEE YOUR NAME ON A JERSEY TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

And neither do I need to know your statistics, accomplishments, or personal circumstances to pray for you.

PRAYER GOES WHERE WE CANNOT GO!

There is something extraordinary about prayer.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL!

It goes places our feet may never travel.

It reaches people we may never personally meet.

It crosses borders, oceans, languages, cultures, and circumstances.

And I believe prayer can restrain evil and influence situations in ways we may never fully recognize or understand this side of eternity.

I cannot walk into every professional locker room.

I cannot visit every training facility.

I cannot sit beside every athlete experiencing disappointment, fear, loneliness, or emotional exhaustion.

But I can pray.

And I do.

From the Philippines, where my wife and I are presently engaged in missionary work, I can pray for an athlete competing in the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, or anywhere else in the world.

DISTANCE MAY LIMIT MY PHYSICAL PRESENCE, BUT IT DOES NOT LIMIT MY ABILITY TO BRING YOUR NAME BEFORE THE LORD!

That is one of the beautiful privileges of intercessory prayer.

You don't have to know the person personally.

You don't have to understand every detail of their circumstances.

And you certainly don't have to receive anything in return.

You simply have to care enough to pray.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ABOUT SPORTS—BUT I UNDERSTAND PEOPLE!

Let me make a confession.

I don't pretend to understand all the intricacies of professional sports.

Association football, American football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, tennis, golf, track and field, boxing, mixed martial arts, auto racing, cricket, esports, and countless other competitive activities each have their own rules, demands, traditions, and cultures.

Some I understand better than others.

But there are certain things I do understand.

PRESSURE.

EXPECTATIONS.

EGO.

PRIDE.

TEMPTATION.

THE FEAR OF FAILURE.

And that dangerous illusion that can sometimes develop when people are repeatedly told they are untouchable, invincible, or somehow above everyone else.

Some call it a "God complex."

And it can become a devastating trap.

Not every athlete experiences these struggles, and fame or success does not automatically make someone arrogant or unhappy.

But when the applause becomes your identity, what happens when the applause stops?

When your entire sense of worth is tied to winning, what happens when you lose?

When everyone wants something from you, how do you know who genuinely cares about you?

And when the crowds go home, the cameras disappear, and the stadium lights are turned off, who is there to ask:

"HOW ARE YOU REALLY DOING?"

Not how is your game.

Not how is your contract.

Not how is your endorsement deal.

But how are YOU?

The person.

The husband or wife.

The father or mother.

The son or daughter.

The human being behind the uniform.

THE LIFESTYLE EVERYONE ENVIES CAN BECOME A LONELY PLACE

From the outside, professional sports can appear to offer the ultimate lifestyle.

Money.

Recognition.

Travel.

Beautiful homes.

Luxury vehicles.

Endorsement contracts.

And opportunities that most people can only imagine.

But appearances can be deceiving.

I've watched far too many athletes experience heartbreaking personal struggles, public humiliation, addiction, broken relationships, financial ruin, and other painful consequences of lives that once appeared to have everything.

Some have suffered serious mental health challenges.

Others have faced injuries that abruptly ended careers they spent a lifetime building.

Still others have struggled to discover who they are once their athletic careers ended.

And tragically, some have lost their lives.

It grieves my heart.

Because somewhere along the way, society can become so fascinated with an athlete's performance that we forget the person performing.

WE CHEER FOR WHAT YOU DO, BUT TOO OFTEN FORGET TO CARE ABOUT WHO YOU ARE!

And that is something I believe Christians, churches, and ministries should take seriously.

You should not have to win a championship to deserve compassion.

You should not have to be famous to receive encouragement.

And you should not have to reach a breaking point before someone takes the time to listen.

YOU ARE MORE THAN YOUR LAST GAME!

Let me speak directly to the athlete who may be reading this.

Maybe you are having the greatest season of your career.

Wonderful!

Enjoy it. Be grateful. Stay humble.

Maybe you are injured, sitting on the bench, struggling to regain your confidence, or wondering whether you will ever compete again.

Please hear me.

YOUR VALUE AS A HUMAN BEING DID NOT DECREASE BECAUSE YOUR STATISTICS DID!

Maybe you've made some mistakes.

Maybe the media has criticized you.

Maybe people who once celebrated you are now questioning your ability, character, or future.

Or perhaps you're doing exceptionally well professionally but privately struggling with something you cannot comfortably discuss with those around you.

I don't know.

And I don't need to know.

I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT SOMEBODY CARES ENOUGH TO PRAY FOR YOU!

You are not merely a contract.

You are not merely a ranking.

You are not merely a highlight reel.

And you are certainly not the sum total of your victories and defeats.

You are a person created in the image of God.

And your life has meaning beyond the sport you play.

A WORD ABOUT PRIDE, HUMILITY, AND SUCCESS

Proverbs 16:18 (KJV) reminds us:

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

Success is not sinful.

Excellence is not wrong.

And there is nothing inherently evil about being compensated well for extraordinary talent, dedication, and hard work.

But success can become dangerous when it convinces us that we no longer need God, accountability, wisdom, or genuine relationships.

One of the greatest challenges any successful person can face is remembering who they are when everyone around them begins treating them differently.

Stay grounded.

Value the people who loved you before the recognition came.

Listen to those who tell you the truth, even when it's uncomfortable.

And remember that your character will ultimately matter far more than any trophy you place upon a shelf.

THE GREATEST VICTORY IS NOT ALWAYS THE ONE RECORDED ON A SCOREBOARD!

Sometimes it's overcoming an addiction.

Sometimes it's repairing a broken relationship.

Sometimes it's admitting that you need help.

Sometimes it's walking away from something destructive.

And sometimes it's finding the courage to say:

"I'M NOT DOING AS WELL AS EVERYONE THINKS I AM."

There is no shame in asking for help.

OUR PRAYERS COME WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED!

Now, I want to make something abundantly clear.

WE ARE NOT CONTACTING YOU FOR MONEY!

We are not seeking endorsements.

We are not asking you to promote our ministry.

We are not requesting tickets, memorabilia, introductions, or special favors.

We are not trying to become part of your entourage.

And we are not asking you to publicize your private struggles.

WE SIMPLY WANT TO PRAY FOR YOU!

That's it.

No strings attached.

No hidden agenda.

No expectation of compensation or recognition.

Whether you are a superstar earning millions or an unknown athlete struggling to make a team, you are equally welcome.

Whether you share our Christian faith or not, we will treat you with dignity, compassion, and respect.

And whether you ever contact us or not, we will continue praying.

Because genuine Christian love should never be conditional upon what someone can do for us.

IF YOU EVER NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO...

I have spent more than five decades walking with Jesus Christ.

I served 27 years in the United States Navy, and over the years I've encountered people from many different backgrounds and circumstances.

As a pastor, missionary, author, husband, father, and grandfather, I've learned something important.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE DON'T NEED ANOTHER LECTURE.

They don't need somebody standing over them explaining everything they should have done differently.

Sometimes they simply need someone willing to sit beside them, listen, and care.

And that's what we're offering.

If you ever need someone to talk to, someone to pray with, or someone who will listen without judging you by your accomplishments or failures, please feel free to contact us.

A PRAYER FOR ATHLETES AROUND THE WORLD

Heavenly Father,

Today, we bring before You athletes around the world.

Those whose names are known in nearly every household, and those whose names may never be recognized beyond their families and communities.

We pray for the champions and the challengers.

The starters and the substitutes.

The professionals and the amateurs.

Those celebrating victories and those struggling through defeats.

Father, protect them from destructive influences, exploitation, temptation, and the pressures that can accompany public recognition.

Give them wisdom to make sound decisions.

Surround them with trustworthy people who genuinely care about their well-being.

Protect their physical health, strengthen their minds, and bring peace to their hearts.

For those battling loneliness, depression, addiction, anxiety, or overwhelming expectations, provide compassionate support, appropriate care, and renewed hope.

For those whose careers have ended unexpectedly, help them discover meaningful purpose beyond competition.

For those who have become consumed with pride, teach them humility.

For those who feel forgotten, remind them that their worth is not determined by applause.

Bless their spouses, children, parents, families, coaches, teammates, and those who support them behind the scenes.

And above all, Father, may they come to know the love, grace, forgiveness, and saving power of Jesus Christ.

We ask these things in His precious name.

AMEN.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT

To every athlete reading this message:

I may never meet you.

I may never attend one of your games.

I may never understand every rule of your sport.

And I may never know what you're going through behind closed doors.

But I want you to remember something.

SOMEWHERE IN THE PHILIPPINES, THERE IS A PASTOR WHO BELIEVES YOUR LIFE MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR NEXT PERFORMANCE.

And tonight, when I bow my head in prayer, athletes around the world will once again be on my heart.

Not because of what you can do for me.

But because of what I believe God can do in your life.

NO STRINGS ATTACHED. JUST PRAYER, COMPASSION, AND A WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN.

God bless you, your families, and your futures.

And remember:

YOU MAY BE FAMOUS TO MILLIONS, UNKNOWN TO MOST, OR FORGOTTEN BY THE CROWDS—BUT YOU ARE NEVER BEYOND THE REACH OF PRAYER!

With sincere love and prayers,
