πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ AMERICA UNDER ATTACK: THE ENEMY MAY BE CLOSER THAN WE THINK!

When a Nation Forgets God, Freedom, and the Responsibility That Comes With Both

Scriptural Foundation: 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ THE GREATEST THREAT TO AMERICA MAY NOT COME FROM BEYOND OUR BORDERS

America.

The land of the free.

The home of the brave.

A nation whose history is filled with extraordinary courage, tremendous sacrifice, remarkable accomplishments, and opportunities that millions around the world have dreamed of experiencing.

But I have a question.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A NATION BECOMES SO ACCUSTOMED TO FREEDOM THAT IT FORGETS THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT FREEDOM REQUIRES?

What happens when liberty becomes an excuse for selfishness?

When disagreement becomes hatred?

When truth becomes whatever is convenient?

When personal ambition becomes more important than the welfare of our neighbors?

And when people become so consumed with winning arguments that they forget how to love one another?

We spend considerable time discussing threats from beyond America's borders.

But I wonder whether we sometimes overlook the dangers developing within our own hearts, homes, churches, institutions, and communities.

I'm not speaking about Americans who disagree with our political opinions.

I'm speaking about the destructive attitudes and behaviors that can take root in any of us.

Pride.

Greed.

Dishonesty.

Hatred.

Corruption.

Indifference toward suffering.

And the dangerous belief that freedom means we owe nothing to anyone but ourselves.

A NATION DOES NOT HAVE TO BE CONQUERED FROM THE OUTSIDE TO BECOME WEAKENED FROM WITHIN!

And that brings me to a Scripture I believe every Christian in America should prayerfully consider.

1. GOD'S WORD BEGINS WITH HIS PEOPLE!

Second Chronicles 7:14 is one of the most familiar passages in the Bible.

We quote it during national crises.

We place it on banners.

We share it on social media.

We repeat it during prayer meetings.

But have we considered what God actually said?

“IF MY PEOPLE...”

Notice where the responsibility begins.

Not with a president.

Not with Congress.

Not with the Supreme Court.

Not with Republicans, Democrats, or Independents.

WITH GOD'S PEOPLE!

Now, we must understand the historical context. God originally spoke these words to Solomon concerning Israel and the covenant relationship He had established with His people.

America is not ancient Israel, and this passage should not be treated as an unconditional national guarantee made specifically to the United States.

Nevertheless, the spiritual principles of humility, repentance, prayer, and seeking God remain profoundly relevant to Christians in every generation.

And perhaps the first question we should ask isn't:

“Lord, what's wrong with America?”

Perhaps it should be:

“LORD, WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE IN ME?”

It's easy to identify someone else's sins.

It's much harder to confront our own.

2. “SHALL HUMBLE THEMSELVES” — PRIDE IS A DANGEROUS ENEMY

Humility is not weakness.

Humility is recognizing that we are accountable to God and that none of us possesses all wisdom, knowledge, or understanding.

Yet pride can convince us that our opinions are always correct, our motives are always pure, and everyone who disagrees with us must be wrong.

We see disagreements in families, churches, communities, and public life.

And too often, instead of listening, we attack.

Instead of understanding, we condemn.

Instead of correcting with love, we humiliate.

But Proverbs 16:18 warns:

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

Friend, America doesn't need Christians who believe they're better than everyone else.

America needs Christians willing to demonstrate the character of Jesus Christ.

People who can speak truth without cruelty.

People who can disagree without hatred.

People who can stand firm in their convictions without abandoning compassion.

BEFORE WE ASK GOD TO HUMBLE A NATION, WE SHOULD BE WILLING TO HUMBLE OURSELVES!

3. “AND PRAY” — HAVE WE FORGOTTEN WHERE OUR HELP COMES FROM?

Let me ask you something.

When trouble comes, what's the first thing we do?

Do we pray?

Or do we immediately turn to social media, television commentators, political arguments, and endless speculation?

I'm not suggesting that Christians should ignore current events or withdraw from civic responsibility.

Absolutely not!

We should remain informed, participate responsibly, and care about the decisions that affect our communities.

But political participation is not a substitute for prayer.

And no political leader can fulfill the role that belongs to God alone.

Psalm 121:2 declares:

“My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”

America needs people who will pray for their leaders, regardless of political affiliation.

Pray for families.

Pray for schools.

Pray for churches.

Pray for those who serve in the military.

Pray for the poor, the elderly, the sick, and the forgotten.

Pray for wisdom, justice, peace, and righteousness.

And while we're praying, let's remember something:

PRAYER SHOULD NEVER BECOME AN EXCUSE FOR REFUSING TO DO THE GOOD THAT IS WITHIN OUR POWER TO DO!

If we pray for hungry families, we should also consider how we can help feed them.

If we pray for peace, we should refuse to promote hatred.

If we pray for honesty in government, we should practice honesty in our own affairs.

If we pray for stronger families, we should begin by strengthening our own relationships.

PRAYER CHANGES THINGS—AND SINCERE PRAYER SHOULD ALSO CHANGE US!

4. “AND SEEK MY FACE” — HAVE WE REPLACED GOD WITH OTHER PRIORITIES?

There's a difference between seeking God's blessings and seeking God Himself.

We want prosperity.

We want security.

We want peace.

We want successful families.

We want protection from trouble.

And there's nothing inherently wrong with desiring those things.

But what happens when we want everything God can provide without wanting the relationship and obedience He requires?

What happens when our loyalty to a political movement becomes stronger than our commitment to biblical truth?

When we excuse dishonesty because it benefits our side?

When we condemn behavior in others that we're willing to overlook in ourselves?

When our churches become known more for their arguments than for their compassion?

Jesus declared in Matthew 6:33:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

THE CHURCH MUST NEVER BECOME SO CONSUMED WITH EARTHLY POWER THAT IT FORGETS ITS HEAVENLY PURPOSE!

Our calling is to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, love our neighbors, care for those in need, and demonstrate the transforming power of Jesus Christ.

That calling remains the same regardless of who occupies the White House.

5. “AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS” — REPENTANCE REQUIRES CHANGE!

Here's where the message becomes uncomfortable.

God didn't merely tell His people to pray.

He told them to turn.

Turn from what?

THEIR WICKED WAYS!

Repentance involves more than acknowledging wrongdoing.

It requires a willingness to change direction.

We cannot sincerely ask God to heal broken relationships while refusing to forgive.

We cannot ask Him to restore honesty while continuing to practice deception.

We cannot pray for justice while deliberately mistreating others.

And we cannot claim to love God while showing contempt for the people He created.

First John 4:20 challenges the person who claims to love God while hating a brother.

That is a serious warning.

And it applies to all of us.

Not just people in positions of authority.

Not just those whose beliefs differ from ours.

ALL OF US!

Perhaps America's spiritual renewal must begin with something less dramatic than a nationwide gathering.

Perhaps it begins when a husband apologizes to his wife.

When parents take responsibility for their children.

When church members reconcile.

When employers treat workers fairly.

When people refuse to spread lies.

When neighbors help one another.

When Christians stop using Scripture as a weapon against people and begin allowing it to examine their own hearts.

TRUE REPENTANCE IS NOT SIMPLY FEELING SORRY ABOUT WHAT WE'VE DONE. IT IS BEING WILLING TO CHANGE HOW WE LIVE!

6. FREEDOM IS A PRIVILEGE—BUT IT ALSO CARRIES RESPONSIBILITY

There's a familiar saying often attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville:

“America is great because America is good. If America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

Although the precise attribution is disputed, the sentiment raises an important question about the relationship between national character and national strength.

What makes a nation truly great?

Is it military power?

Economic wealth?

Technological advancement?

Political influence?

Those things can certainly contribute to national strength.

But what happens when material success grows while compassion declines?

What happens when people demand their rights but neglect their responsibilities?

What happens when freedom is understood only as permission to do whatever we desire, regardless of the consequences for others?

Galatians 5:13 reminds believers:

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

FREEDOM WITHOUT RESPONSIBILITY CAN BECOME SELFISHNESS.

POWER WITHOUT CHARACTER CAN BECOME OPPRESSION.

PROSPERITY WITHOUT COMPASSION CAN BECOME INDIFFERENCE.

And RELIGION WITHOUT LOVE CAN BECOME AN EMPTY PERFORMANCE!

As a retired United States Navy veteran who served for 27 years, I understand something about the sacrifices made to preserve our freedoms.

I also understand that those freedoms carry responsibilities.

Responsibilities to our families.

To our neighbors.

To our communities.

To future generations.

And, as Christians, to the God we profess to serve.

We honor freedom not merely by celebrating it, but by exercising it responsibly.

7. AMERICA, THE ENEMY MAY BE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK!

When I say America is under attack from within, I'm not identifying a political party, a particular generation, or a group of citizens as enemies of the nation.

The deeper concern is spiritual and moral.

Consider what happens when dishonesty becomes acceptable.

When cruelty becomes entertainment.

When personal gain becomes more important than integrity.

When the suffering of others no longer moves us.

When families stop communicating.

When churches stop discipling.

When people become unwilling to acknowledge their mistakes.

These dangers do not belong exclusively to one political ideology or social group.

They can affect anyone.

Including those of us who stand behind pulpits.

And that's why the warning must begin with self-examination.

WE CANNOT EXPECT A NATION TO PRACTICE VIRTUES THAT WE REFUSE TO PRACTICE OURSELVES!

Jesus said in Matthew 5:16:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Notice that Jesus called His followers to shine.

Not merely to complain about the darkness.

Not simply to identify everyone else's failures.

But to live in such a way that others could see the goodness of God reflected through their actions.

AMERICA NEEDS MORE LIGHT—AND CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE WILLING TO HELP PROVIDE IT!

8. “THEN WILL I HEAR FROM HEAVEN” — A CALL TO RETURN

There is something deeply moving about the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14.

God's message to Israel was not simply a warning.

It was also an invitation.

An invitation to humility.

An invitation to repentance.

An invitation to renewed fellowship.

An invitation to seek the Lord.

And while the covenant promise was originally given to Israel, Christians today can still hear in this passage a compelling reminder of God's mercy and His call to repentance.

Second Peter 3:9 speaks of God's patience and His desire that people come to repentance.

Friend, I believe America needs spiritual awakening.

But spiritual awakening cannot be manufactured through political slogans.

It cannot be purchased with campaign contributions.

It cannot be legislated into existence.

It must begin with hearts willing to turn toward God.

And the Church has a responsibility to proclaim that message with both conviction and compassion.

GOD'S CALL TO REPENTANCE IS NOT AN INVITATION TO DESPAIR. IT IS AN INVITATION TO RETURN!

9. A PERSONAL WORD FROM ACROSS THE PACIFIC

As I write from the Philippines, my heart remains deeply connected to the United States of America.

I love my country.

I am grateful for the opportunities it has provided, the freedoms I've enjoyed, and the privilege of serving it for nearly three decades in uniform.

But loving America does not require pretending that everything is perfect.

And recognizing our nation's shortcomings does not mean abandoning hope for its future.

In missionary work, I've seen how much difference compassion, sacrifice, and faithful service can make in the lives of people facing extraordinary hardships.

I've also learned that the most meaningful changes often begin with ordinary people willing to do extraordinary things for others.

Perhaps that's a lesson worth remembering back home.

We don't have to agree on every political issue to treat one another with dignity.

We don't have to share identical backgrounds to care about struggling families.

And we don't have to abandon our convictions to demonstrate kindness.

AMERICA'S FUTURE IS NOT MERELY A QUESTION OF WHO HOLDS POWER. IT IS ALSO A QUESTION OF HOW WE CHOOSE TO LIVE WITH ONE ANOTHER.

As Christians, we have a responsibility to pray, serve, speak truth, practice justice, demonstrate mercy, and remain faithful to Jesus Christ.

That responsibility does not end after an election.

It begins again every morning.

πŸ™ A PRAYER FOR AMERICA

Heavenly Father,

Today, I bring before You the nation I love—the United States of America.

Lord, You know our history, our accomplishments, our failures, our divisions, and our struggles.

You know the sacrifices made by generations before us, and You know the challenges facing generations yet to come.

Father, forgive us where pride has replaced humility.

Forgive us where selfishness has replaced compassion.

Forgive us where dishonesty has replaced integrity.

Forgive us where anger and hatred have overshadowed love.

And forgive us, Your people, when we have been quicker to condemn others than to examine ourselves.

Lord, strengthen our families.

Guide our leaders with wisdom.

Protect those who serve our communities and our nation.

Comfort the grieving.

Provide for the needy.

Defend the vulnerable.

Bring reconciliation where relationships have been broken.

And help Your Church remain faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Teach us to use our freedom responsibly.

Teach us to disagree without hatred.

Teach us to stand for truth without abandoning love.

And help us remember that genuine spiritual renewal begins with humility, repentance, and obedience to Your Word.

Father, let Your mercy be evident in our lives.

And may our actions reflect the righteousness, justice, and compassion that You call us to demonstrate.

In the precious and holy name of Jesus Christ, we pray.

Amen and Amen!

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ A FINAL WORD TO AMERICA

America, I still believe there is reason for hope.

Not because any political party possesses all the answers.

Not because any individual leader can solve every problem.

And not because our history guarantees our future.

But because people can still choose humility over pride.

Truth over deception.

Compassion over indifference.

Service over selfishness.

And reconciliation over hatred.

To my fellow Christians, I leave you with this challenge:

BEFORE YOU ASK GOD TO CHANGE AMERICA, ASK HIM TO CHANGE YOU!

Before you criticize someone else's failures, examine your own heart.

Before you demand that others demonstrate righteousness, make sure you're practicing it yourself.

Before you complain about the darkness, ask whether your light is shining.

And before you conclude that America's greatest enemies are somewhere else, consider the destructive attitudes we sometimes allow to grow within our own hearts.

AMERICA DOESN'T JUST NEED MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT GOD. SHE NEEDS MORE PEOPLE LIVING AS THOUGH THEY BELIEVE HIS WORD!

The call of 2 Chronicles 7:14 is a reminder that humility, prayer, seeking God, and repentance matter.

The question is not whether we can quote the verse.

THE QUESTION IS WHETHER WE'RE WILLING TO LIVE BY ITS PRINCIPLES!

GOD BLESS AMERICA. AND MAY AMERICA NEVER FORGET THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT COMES WITH BEING FREE!
