YOU SAY THIS—BUT WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT IT?

When Human Opinions Meet the Unchanging Word of God!

By James Langston | Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International (POMI)

“For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” — Psalm 119:89 (KJV)

Everybody has an opinion. Everybody has something to say. And in today's world, with social media, television, podcasts, and countless voices competing for our attention, opinions are certainly not in short supply!

But here is a question that every Christian—and every person searching for truth—ought to ask:

“You say this, but what does the Bible say about it?”

That question is the inspiration behind my book, You Say This But What Does the Bible Say About It?

And it is a question that deserves more than a passing thought.

WHOSE WORD ARE YOU BELIEVING?

We live in a generation where personal feelings are frequently treated as facts, popular opinions are mistaken for truth, and even long-established traditions sometimes receive more attention than the Scriptures themselves.

Someone says, “Well, I believe…”

Another responds, “My pastor always taught…”

Someone else declares, “That's not how I see it!”

But what happens when what we believe, what we have been taught, or what society accepts does not agree with what God has already said?

Do we change the Bible to accommodate our opinions, or do we allow the Bible to correct our thinking?

The Apostle Paul reminds us:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)

Notice that Scripture is not merely given to encourage us. It is also given to teach, correct, and instruct us.

Sometimes the truth comforts us. Sometimes it challenges us. And sometimes it requires us to acknowledge that we have been wrong.

But God's Word remains true!

FAITH MUST HAVE A FOUNDATION

Christianity was never intended to be built upon changing cultural opinions, religious personalities, or whatever happens to be popular this week.

Our faith must rest upon Jesus Christ and the truth of God's Word.

In Acts 17:11, the Bereans were commended because they received the Word with readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily to determine whether the things they heard were true.

Think about that!

They did not simply accept everything because someone stood before them and preached it.

They searched the Scriptures!

That is a lesson for every generation of Believers.

Whether you are listening to a sermon, reading a Christian book, participating in a Bible study, or considering someone's interpretation of Scripture, you have both the opportunity and the responsibility to examine what is being taught.

And yes, that includes the things I write and preach!

The authority belongs to God's Word—not to the person holding the microphone or writing the book.

A QUESTION WORTH ASKING EVERY DAY

Before accepting an idea simply because it sounds convincing, ask yourself:

  • Does this agree with the Scriptures?

  • Am I relying upon God's Word or someone's interpretation of it?

  • Have I examined the passage in its proper context?

  • Am I willing to change my thinking when Scripture shows me something different?

  • Am I seeking the truth—or merely looking for someone to agree with me?

These questions are not intended to create arguments or division. They are intended to encourage spiritual growth, biblical understanding, and a stronger foundation of faith.

We do not need more Christians who can merely repeat what someone else has said.

We need Christians who know what the Bible says, understand why it says it, and are willing to live according to its truth!

Author: James Langston

This book invites readers to consider one of the most important questions they can bring to any discussion involving faith and biblical truth.

It is a question for new Believers, longtime Christians, Bible students, teachers, ministers, and anyone who sincerely wants to understand the Scriptures.

Whether you agree or disagree with what another person teaches, the final question should never be merely, “Who said it?”

The question should be, “What does the Bible say about it?”

A FINAL WORD FROM MY HEART

After decades of preaching, teaching, writing, and ministering to people from different cultures and backgrounds, one truth continues to stand above the noise:

God does not need us to defend our personal opinions. He calls us to faithfully proclaim His Word.

We will not always agree with one another. We will not always understand everything perfectly. And there will be times when we must prayerfully study a passage more carefully.

But disagreement should never become an excuse to abandon the Scriptures, nor should confidence in our own understanding prevent us from learning.

Jesus declared:

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” — John 17:17 (KJV)

So the next time someone makes a declaration about God, salvation, Christian living, or the things of eternity, remember the question:

YOU SAY THIS—BUT WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT IT?

Because at the end of the day, it is not what you say, what I say, or what the world says that determines eternal truth.

It is what GOD has said!

To God be the glory!
