YOU CANNOT CONTROL TODAY—BUT YOU CAN CHOOSE HOW YOU FACE IT

What Happens Around You Does Not Have to Control What Happens Within You

Today, some of you will face something you never expected.

Before this day is over, your plans may change.

The phone may ring.

An unexpected bill may arrive.

Someone may disappoint you.

A door you were counting on may suddenly close.

You may find yourself doing something you never wanted to do, going somewhere you would rather not go, or dealing with circumstances you never imagined would become part of your life.

And then there are the people.

Today you may meet someone who inspires you.

Someone who challenges you.

Someone who helps you.

Someone who encourages you.

Someone who gets on your last nerve!

You may even encounter someone who dislikes you, opposes you, misunderstands you, or seems determined to make your day more difficult.

But here is something worth remembering:

What happens TO you does not have to determine what happens IN you.

The circumstances may be beyond your control.

Your response is still a choice.

WHICH WAY WILL YOU GO?

The Bible gives us a starting point for facing the uncertainties of life:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

— Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

Those words sound simple when everything is going well.

They become much more challenging when life stops cooperating.

It is easy to say, “I trust God,” when the road is smooth.

But what happens when you cannot see around the next corner?

What happens when you prayed and the answer did not come the way you expected?

What happens when someone hurts you?

What happens when your carefully constructed plans collapse?

What happens when God leads you somewhere you would never have chosen for yourself?

That is when trust becomes more than something we say.

Trust becomes something we live.

“I CAN HANDLE THIS MYSELF”

There is another way to approach life.

We can decide:

“I will figure this out myself.”

“I know what is best.”

“Nobody is going to tell me what to do.”

“I make my own rules.”

“I am in charge of my life.”

And God will allow us to make that choice.

But sooner or later, life has a way of reminding us just how little we actually control.

We cannot control every diagnosis.

We cannot control every storm.

We cannot control what other people say.

We cannot control how other people treat us.

We cannot control every financial problem.

We cannot control tomorrow.

We cannot even guarantee that the plans we make this morning will survive until tonight.

That is why Scripture does not tell us to trust our ability to control everything.

It tells us:

TRUST IN THE LORD.

LEAN NOT UNTO THINE OWN UNDERSTANDING

This may be the hardest part.

Because we like explanations.

We want to know why.

Why did this happen?

Why now?

Why me?

Why did God allow it?

Why didn't He stop it?

Why didn't things happen the way I prayed?

But Proverbs does not say:

“Understand everything, and then trust God.”

It says:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

There will be moments when you simply do not understand.

Trust Him anyway.

There will be roads you did not choose.

Trust Him anyway.

There will be people you would rather avoid.

Ask God how He wants you to respond.

There will be disappointments you never saw coming.

Trust Him anyway.

There will be moments when your emotions tell you to retaliate, quit, run, explode, give up, or take matters into your own hands.

Stop. Pray. Trust God.

YOU MAY NOT CHOOSE THE SITUATION

This is important.

Faith does not mean pretending that painful things are painless.

Trusting God does not mean every person you meet will treat you kindly.

Following Christ does not guarantee that every road will be easy.

Jesus never promised us a trouble-free life.

But He did promise His presence.

You may not choose what happens today.

But you can choose whether bitterness takes root.

You can choose whether anger controls your response.

You can choose whether fear dictates your decisions.

You can choose whether somebody else's behavior determines yours.

And most importantly:

You can choose whether you will trust yourself—or trust God.

BEFORE YOU REACT TODAY...

Before sending that angry message—pray.

Before speaking words you cannot take back—pray.

Before making a major decision while emotionally overwhelmed—pray.

Before assuming the worst—pray.

Before deciding there is no way forward—pray.

Before allowing fear to convince you that everything is falling apart—remember:

God is already standing in the tomorrow you cannot see.

You do not have to know everything God knows.

You simply need to know God.

TWO WAYS TO FACE TODAY

You can face today saying:

“I've got this.”

Or you can face today saying:

“Lord, You've got me.”

There is a tremendous difference.

One depends upon your strength.

The other depends upon His.

One depends upon your understanding.

The other depends upon His wisdom.

One demands that you know where the road leads.

The other allows you to follow the One who already knows.

Proverbs 3:5–6 can become both your starting point and your ending point today.

Start your day trusting Him.

Walk through your day acknowledging Him.

End your day thanking Him.

And when something happens between the beginning and the ending that you never expected—

trust Him there too.

CHOOSE WISELY

Today will bring choices.

Some will seem insignificant.

Others may change the direction of your life.

You cannot determine everything that will happen around you.

But you can determine where you will place your trust.

So when life throws something unexpected your way, remember:

Don't merely ask, “Why is this happening to me?”

Ask:

“Lord, how do You want me to respond?”

That question can change everything.

Your emotions may be screaming.

Your circumstances may be confusing.

Other people may be pressuring you.

Your own understanding may be telling you one thing.

But God's Word still says:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart.”

The choice belongs to you.

Choose wisely.

🙏 A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father,

I do not know everything this day will bring.

I do not know who I will meet, what challenges will arise, what doors will open, or what unexpected circumstances may interrupt my plans.

But You already know.

Help me not to lean upon my own understanding.

When I am frustrated, give me patience.

When I am afraid, give me faith.

When I am angry, guard my words.

When I am confused, give me wisdom.

When I am tempted to take control, remind me to trust You.

Direct my path today.

Help me respond to people with grace, circumstances with faith, difficulties with perseverance, and Your leading with obedience.

Whatever comes today, help me remember:

You are still God.
You are still faithful.
And I can still trust You.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
