⏳ YESTERDAY IS GONE—BUT ITS LESSONS ARE STILL SPEAKING!

Part 1 of 4 | Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: The Choices That Shape Eternity

Scripture Focus: Philippians 3:13–14 (KJV)

"Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

IF YOU COULD GO BACK, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?

There is something about getting older that makes you look backward.

You remember the people you loved, the places you lived, the opportunities you embraced, and the ones you allowed to slip through your fingers.

You remember decisions that changed your life for the better.

And, if you're like most of us, you remember a few that you wish you could make all over again.

Perhaps you married someone you shouldn't have.

Perhaps you walked away from a relationship that could have been restored.

Maybe you spent years chasing something that never brought you happiness.

Perhaps you ignored the advice of someone who genuinely loved you.

Or maybe you spent so much time trying to make a living that you forgot to make a life.

If you could turn back the hands of time, what would you do differently?

It's a question worth considering.

But there's something even more important to understand.

You cannot change what happened yesterday, but you can change what yesterday teaches you today.

YOUR PAST IS PART OF YOUR STORY—NOT THE END OF IT

Some people spend their entire lives imprisoned by memories.

They carry guilt over mistakes God is willing to forgive.

They carry bitterness toward people who hurt them decades ago.

They replay conversations that cannot be repeated and decisions that cannot be reversed.

And while their bodies are living in the present, their hearts remain trapped in the past.

My friend, yesterday was a chapter in your life.

It was never intended to become the entire book.

The apostle Paul understood this.

Before his conversion, Paul persecuted Christians. Yet after encountering Jesus Christ, his life took an entirely different direction.

He couldn't undo the harm he had caused.

But he could surrender his future to God.

And he did.

GOD CAN REDEEM WHAT YOU CANNOT REPAIR

Maybe you have wasted years.

Maybe you've disappointed people.

Maybe you've disappointed yourself.

But your past doesn't have to determine every remaining chapter of your life.

You can apologize.

You can forgive.

You can make restitution where possible.

You can rebuild relationships when others are willing.

And most importantly, you can turn to Jesus Christ.

Second Corinthians 5:17 reminds us:

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

That doesn't mean every consequence disappears.

It means your past does not have the final word over your relationship with God.

A PERSONAL WORD

After decades of military service, ministry, writing, and missionary outreach, I've learned something important.

Life doesn't always unfold according to our plans.

There are victories we celebrate and disappointments we wish we could forget.

But through it all, God's mercy remains available.

If I spent every day dwelling on yesterday, I would miss the opportunities God has placed before me today.

And so would you.

Don't spend the rest of your life staring at a door that has already closed while ignoring the one God may be opening in front of you.

THE QUESTION FOR TODAY

What is one thing from your past that you need to surrender to God?

A regret?

A disappointment?

A broken relationship?

A sin you've never confessed?

Bring it to Him.

You may not be able to rewrite yesterday.

But through God's grace, you can begin writing a different tomorrow.

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me through the years behind me. Forgive my sins, heal the wounds I still carry, and give me wisdom to learn from my mistakes. Help me release what I cannot change and embrace the opportunities You have placed before me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Reflection: If you could speak to your younger self, what is one lesson you would share?

Tell us in the comments. Your experience may encourage someone who is struggling with yesterday.
