📺 WHEN NOTHING SHOCKS US ANYMORE

Sunday Afternoon — October 4, 2026

There was a time when certain news stories would dominate conversations for days.

Today, something shocking can happen in the morning and practically disappear beneath another shocking story by evening.

Think about that.

We are living in an age of constant exposure.

Violence.

War.

Political unrest.

Natural disasters.

Human trafficking.

Broken families.

Mental-health crises.

Children hurting.

Hatred amplified through social media.

Economic uncertainty.

People increasingly divided from one another.

We see it on our phones while eating breakfast.

We hear about it driving to work.

We watch it on television at night.

Then tomorrow—

we do it all over again.

The danger isn't merely that terrible things are happening.

The danger is that we can become accustomed to terrible things happening.

❤️ HAVE WE BECOME DESENSITIZED?

Jesus said something sobering:

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” — Matthew 24:12

Notice the connection.

As lawlessness increases, something can happen to the human heart:

Love can grow cold.

Compassion can grow cold.

Conviction can grow cold.

Concern for our neighbor can grow cold.

Even our response to suffering can grow cold.

We begin saying things like:

“That's just the world we live in.”

“Nothing surprises me anymore.”

“What can I do about it?”

Those statements may sound harmless, but they can become the vocabulary of complacency.

👀 DON'T JUST WATCH—SEE

There is a difference between looking at something and actually seeing it.

When you hear that another family lost everything, see them.

When you hear that another young person took his or her own life, see the grieving family.

When you hear about another war, remember there are mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, soldiers, refugees, and ordinary human beings behind the statistics.

When you hear about hunger, homelessness, trafficking, addiction, loneliness, or despair, remember:

Those aren't merely stories. Those are people.

Somebody's son.

Somebody's daughter.

Somebody's mother.

Somebody's father.

Somebody Jesus died for.

🧂 WE ARE STILL SALT AND LIGHT

Jesus did not call His Church to watch darkness spread from the sidelines.

He said:

“Ye are the light of the world.” — Matthew 5:14

Darkness should never make the light surrender.

Darkness is the reason the light is needed.

Perhaps you cannot stop a war.

Perhaps you cannot repair an economy.

Perhaps you cannot change an entire culture.

But you can pray.

You can help your neighbor.

You can feed someone.

You can encourage someone.

You can support a struggling family.

You can mentor a child.

You can share the Gospel.

You can refuse to hate.

You can refuse to become numb.

And you can make certain that your light is still burning.

Don't allow constant exposure to tragedy to steal your compassion.

Don't allow yesterday's headline to make today's suffering seem ordinary.

Don't allow darkness to convince you that light no longer matters.

Because somewhere today, somebody desperately needs the light God placed inside you.

Don't just watch the world changing.

ASK GOD HOW HE WANTS YOU TO RESPOND TO IT.

Lord, don't allow our hearts to grow cold. Give us eyes that truly see, ears that truly hear, and hearts that still feel the suffering around us. Show us where we can make a difference, and give us courage to act. In Jesus' name, Amen.
