WHEN THE GRAVE CLOSES, OPPORTUNITY ENDS!
Life Is Your Preparation for Eternity—What Are You Doing With It?
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 9:10 (KJV)
"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."
There is coming a day when tomorrow will no longer belong to you.
Someone once said, "This life is a dress rehearsal for eternity."
Think about that statement for a moment.
Every breath we take, every sunrise we witness, every opportunity we receive, and every decision we make is taking place within a limited window of time called LIFE.
And whether we acknowledge it or not, that window is closing.
We are all moving toward the grave. The rich and the poor. The educated and the uneducated. The young and the old. The powerful and the powerless. The preacher and the person sitting in the pew.
Every passing day brings us one day closer to the end of our earthly journey.
The question is not whether our earthly life will end. The question is whether we will be prepared when it does.
THE GRAVE IS NOT A PLACE FOR SECOND CHANCES
Solomon's words in Ecclesiastes 9:10 are sobering because they confront us with a reality we would sometimes rather ignore.
There are things that must be done while we are alive because death closes the door on earthly opportunities.
When we are in the grave, it will be too late to go back and mend the errors of a life carelessly lived.
Too late to make that telephone call.
Too late to offer that long-overdue apology.
Too late to forgive the person whose offense we have carried for years.
Too late to tell our children how much we loved them.
Too late to help the person God placed in our path.
And most importantly, too late to repent and make our peace with God.
The Bible declares in Hebrews 9:27:
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment."
Notice what Scripture does not say.
It does not promise another earthly lifetime to correct our mistakes. It does not guarantee a second opportunity after death to receive Jesus Christ. It does not suggest that we can indefinitely postpone the most important decision we will ever make.
The opportunity to respond to God's offer of salvation is NOW.
TOMORROW IS A PROMISE NO ONE HAS MADE YOU
How many people have said, "I'll get right with God someday"?
Someday, when I'm older.
Someday, when I finish school.
Someday, when I get married.
Someday, when I retire.
Someday, when I have enjoyed everything this world has to offer.
But what happens when someday never comes?
James 4:14 reminds us:
"Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."
Life is precious, but it is also uncertain.
We make appointments, arrange vacations, prepare retirement plans, and schedule activities months or even years into the future.
There is nothing wrong with planning. Wisdom encourages responsible preparation.
But there is something terribly wrong with preparing for everything except eternity.
We insure our homes, our automobiles, and sometimes even our possessions. Yet many give little consideration to the eternal condition of their souls.
Jesus asked in Mark 8:36:
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"
That question deserves more than a passing thought.
It deserves an answer.
YOU CANNOT LIVE YESTERDAY OVER AGAIN
There are things in my own life that, given the opportunity, I would have handled differently.
Words I would have spoken more carefully. Decisions I would have approached more prayerfully. Opportunities I would have recognized sooner.
But yesterday is gone.
I cannot retrieve it.
Neither can you.
However, by the grace of God, we can do something about today.
If you have wronged someone, seek reconciliation while you have the opportunity.
If you have neglected your family, begin investing in those relationships today.
If God has placed a ministry, a calling, or a responsibility upon your heart, stop waiting for perfect circumstances.
If you have been putting off helping someone in need, remember that your opportunity to help may not remain forever.
And if you have never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, there is no more important matter demanding your attention.
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is uncertain. Today is the opportunity God has placed before you.
GOOD WORKS CANNOT PURCHASE ETERNAL LIFE
There is an important distinction we must understand.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 calls us to act diligently while we have life and opportunity. But it does not teach that we can earn salvation by doing enough good things.
No amount of charitable giving, religious activity, church attendance, or humanitarian service can purchase eternal life.
Ephesians 2:8–9 declares:
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Salvation is God's gift, made possible through the finished work of Jesus Christ at Calvary.
We do not work to become saved.
We place our faith in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished at the Cross. And because we belong to Him, our lives should reflect that faith through love, obedience, service, and compassion.
Good works are the fruit of salvation, not the price of salvation.
And while we cannot earn eternity through our works, what we do with the opportunities God gives us matters.
Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:20 to lay up treasures in heaven.
The time to serve God, love others, share the Gospel, and faithfully use what He has entrusted to us is during the life we have been given.
THREE OPPORTUNITIES—ALL ON THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE
Perhaps God has spoken to your heart before.
Perhaps you have heard the Gospel a hundred times.
Perhaps you have felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit and said, "Not today, Lord. Maybe tomorrow."
You may have received a first opportunity.
Then a second.
And perhaps even a third.
But understand something: God has never promised you a fourth.
Nor has He promised any of us another sunrise.
Second Corinthians 6:2 declares:
"Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."
Not next Sunday.
Not next Christmas.
Not when your circumstances improve.
NOW!
This is not an invitation to live in terror of death. It is an invitation to live in the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ.
The Christian does not have to fear the grave as the end of all hope. Jesus Christ conquered death through His resurrection, and those who belong to Him have the promise of eternal life.
As Jesus declared in John 11:25:
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live."
Death ends our earthly opportunities, but it does not end the eternal life promised to those who trust in Christ.
WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE TIME YOU HAVE LEFT?
At Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, we understand that every day matters.
Every opportunity to share the Gospel matters.
Every hungry family we can help feed matters.
Every child we can help educate matters.
Every Bible placed into someone's hands matters.
Every prayer offered, every life encouraged, and every soul reached with the message of Jesus Christ matters.
Why?
Because none of us knows how much time remains.
That is why we continue going into communities, reaching families, ministering to children, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ wherever God opens a door.
Not because we can save anyone through our own efforts.
Only Jesus saves.
But because we have been commissioned to tell the world about the One who can.
And the time to do that is NOW.
A FINAL QUESTION BEFORE YOU LEAVE
If today were your final day on earth, would you be ready to meet God?
Not because you were a good person.
Not because your name appeared on a church membership roll.
Not because your parents were Christians.
Not because you supported a ministry or donated to charity.
But because you have personally placed your faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work at Calvary.
If you cannot answer that question with confidence, I encourage you not to postpone the matter.
You can come to Christ today.
You can repent, turn to Him in faith, and receive the forgiveness He freely offers.
Romans 10:13 declares:
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Your past does not have to determine your eternity. Jesus Christ has already made the way.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of another day and another opportunity to draw nearer to You.
Forgive us for the time we have wasted, the opportunities we have neglected, and the times we have treated tomorrow as though it were guaranteed.
Help us to recognize the urgency of the hour without losing the joy and peace that come from trusting You.
For those who do not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, I pray that today will be the day they turn to Him in repentance and faith.
For those who already belong to You, renew our commitment to live faithfully, love generously, forgive freely, and share the Gospel boldly.
Teach us to number our days and apply our hearts unto wisdom.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
THE TIME IS NOW. ETERNITY IS FOREVER.
Dear friend, one day your earthly journey will come to an end.
The opportunities you have today will not always be available.
The grave will close the chapter on everything you could have done during your earthly lifetime.
But today, you are still here.
Today, you can make things right.
Today, you can love someone, forgive someone, help someone, and tell someone about Jesus.
And most importantly, today you can receive the salvation that Jesus Christ has already purchased for you at Calvary.
Whatever you must do, do it while you have the opportunity.
Because on this side of the grave, there is still time. On the other side, the opportunity to prepare has passed.
