⚠️ WAKE UP — COMPLACENCY IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN YOU THINK

Sunday Morning — October 4, 2026

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep…” — Romans 13:11

Something is happening around us.

You don't need to be a theologian, historian, economist, or political expert to recognize it. You simply need to be paying attention.

Every day brings another headline.

Another tragedy.

Another family in crisis.

Another act of violence.

Another war or threat of war.

Another natural disaster.

Another economic concern.

Another cultural boundary crossed that only a few years ago would have shocked us.

And therein lies one of our greatest dangers:

We are getting used to it.

What once stopped us in our tracks now barely interrupts our scrolling.

We see the headline, shake our heads, say, “That's terrible,” and move on to the next story.

That is what makes complacency so dangerous.

🚨 WHEN THE UNUSUAL BECOMES NORMAL

Jesus warned His disciples about the importance of recognizing the times.

In Matthew 24, He spoke of wars, rumors of wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, deception, persecution, lawlessness, and the love of many growing cold.

His instruction was not that believers should panic.

It was that believers should pay attention.

There is a tremendous difference between fear and awareness.

Fear says, “Everything is out of control.”

Faith says, “God is still on the throne, so I need to be awake, prayerful, discerning, and ready.”

The Christian response to troubling times is neither panic nor complacency.

It is spiritual alertness.

💤 THE CHURCH CANNOT AFFORD TO FALL ASLEEP

Perhaps the greatest threat facing Christians isn't always what is happening around us.

It may be what is happening inside us.

We can become so accustomed to darkness that we stop recognizing how dark it has become.

We can become so accustomed to bad news that we stop praying about it.

We can become so accustomed to people hurting that compassion becomes optional.

We can become so accustomed to sin that conviction becomes uncomfortable.

And we can become so occupied with living our lives that we forget we were called to reach somebody else's.

Jesus said:

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” — Matthew 24:42

Church, this is not the hour to sleep.

This is not the hour to coast.

This is not the hour to say, “Somebody else will handle it.”

✝️ WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

Pray more.

Read God's Word more.

Love people more.

Share Christ more.

Pay attention.

Help somebody.

Encourage somebody.

Tell somebody about Jesus.

And refuse to allow the extraordinary events happening around you to become so ordinary that they no longer move your heart.

The alarm is sounding.

The question is not whether the world is changing.

The question is:

ARE WE AWAKE ENOUGH TO NOTICE?

Lord, open our eyes. Guard our hearts against complacency. Give us wisdom to understand the times, courage to stand for truth, compassion for those who are hurting, and urgency to reach those who do not know You. Keep Your Church awake, faithful, and ready. In Jesus' name, Amen.
