❤️ SOMEBODY'S GRANDMOTHER PRAYED FOR THEM—AND I'M ONE OF THEM!
GrandMamma's Prayers (2nd Edition): One Woman's Faith. Generations of Hope. A Legacy That Reached the Nations.
By Pastor James Langston | Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International
📖 "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." — James 5:16 (KJV)
🙏 IF YOUR GRANDMOTHER EVER PRAYED FOR YOU, THIS MESSAGE IS PERSONAL!
Somewhere in the world today, there's a grown man who still remembers hearing his grandmother call his name in prayer.
Somewhere, there's a woman who remembers sitting beside her grandmother in church, listening to the congregation sing those old hymns of faith.
Somewhere, there's a mother who remembers her grandmother's worn Bible, her favorite chair, and the sound of her voice talking to God.
And somewhere, there's someone who can raise both hands toward heaven and declare:
"IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR MY GRANDMOTHER'S PRAYERS, I DON'T KNOW WHERE I WOULD BE TODAY!"
Perhaps that someone is you.
I know it's me.
And that's one of the reasons I wrote GrandMamma's Prayers (2nd Edition).

🌍 DIFFERENT NAMES. DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. THE SAME PRECIOUS LOVE.
Grandmother. Grandma. Granny. Nana. Gran. Abuela. Oma. Nonna. Lola. Lolo's better half. Mamaw. Meemaw. Big Mama. GrandMamma.
The names change from one country, culture, community, and family to another.
But there's something wonderfully familiar about a grandmother who loves her family and knows how to pray.
She might have lived in a small wooden house in rural America.
She might have raised her family in a crowded neighborhood in Manila, a village in Africa, a community in Latin America, or a town somewhere in Europe.
She might have had very little formal education.
She might never have traveled beyond the borders of her homeland.
She might not have owned a car, possessed a bank account with much money, or received recognition for anything she accomplished.
But when trouble came knocking, she knew where to turn.
SHE KNEW HOW TO GET ON HER KNEES AND TALK TO GOD!
And somehow, when GrandMamma prayed, the burdens didn't always disappear immediately, but the family found strength to face another day.
She prayed when the children were sick.
She prayed when money was scarce.
She prayed when somebody in the family was making decisions that could destroy their future.
She prayed for the grandchildren who were doing well.
And she prayed even harder for the ones who weren't.
Sometimes, she prayed through tears.
Sometimes, she prayed while cooking supper, washing clothes, or working in the garden.
And sometimes, when everyone else was sleeping, GrandMamma was still awake, calling the names of her children and grandchildren before the throne of grace.
You might have forgotten some of the things your grandmother said. But you never forgot that she prayed.
❤️ MY GRANDMAMMA HAD A NAME: BERTHA MERIWETHER
Let me tell you about a woman who changed my life.
Her name was Bertha Meriwether.
She was born on November 16, 1895, the daughter of former slaves.
Think about that for a moment.
She entered this world only thirty years after the end of the American Civil War.
She witnessed enormous changes in America and throughout the world.
She experienced poverty, hardship, racial division, wars, uncertainty, and the challenges of raising and caring for a family through difficult times.
She lived for more than a century.
And through those years, one thing remained constant.
GrandMamma believed in God, and GrandMamma believed in prayer.
She didn't have all the answers to life's problems.
She didn't possess unlimited financial resources.
She couldn't shield her family from every hardship.
But she understood something that remains just as true today as it was more than a hundred years ago.
When you don't know what else to do, you can still pray.
Her faith wasn't something she displayed only when attending church.
It was part of who she was.
Prayer wasn't a religious performance.
It was her lifeline.
And I was one of the people she prayed for.
✝️ FROM A GRANDMOTHER'S PRAYERS TO PREACHING THE GOSPEL AROUND THE WORLD
When I think about my life, I often find myself looking backward.
Not because I want to live in the past.
But because I never want to forget the people God used to help bring me to where I am today.
I think about my childhood.
I think about the spiritual foundation laid by those who came before me.
I think about the day I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior in 1973, when I was fourteen years old.
I think about the twenty-seven years I spent serving in the United States Navy.
And I think about the ministry God entrusted to me.
Over the years, I've had opportunities to preach, teach, write, encourage, and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ across national and cultural boundaries.
Today, through Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, our missionary efforts continue reaching people in the Philippines and beyond.
And sometimes I wonder:
Did GrandMamma ever imagine how far the influence of her prayers would travel?
Could she have envisioned her great-grandson proclaiming the Gospel in countries she would never visit?
Could she have imagined the books, sermons, missionary journeys, and lives that would become part of the story?
I cannot claim to know everything she imagined.
But I know she prayed.
And I know that her example of faith helped shape the man, minister, and missionary I became.
She may never have traveled to the nations herself, but the legacy of her prayers did.
To God be the glory!
📖 GRANDMAMMA'S PRAYERS—MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER BOOK
Some books entertain us.
Some books educate us.
Some books challenge the way we think.
But every once in a while, a book reaches into our memories and reminds us of someone whose love helped shape our lives.
That is my prayer for GrandMamma's Prayers (2nd Edition).
This isn't simply a collection of stories about an extraordinary woman.
It is a Christian memoir about faith, family, perseverance, hardship, military service, ministry, redemption, and the enduring power of intercessory prayer.
It is about a woman who lived through extraordinary historical changes while holding tightly to an unchanging God.
It is about the sacrifices that previous generations made so that those who followed might have opportunities they themselves never enjoyed.
And it is about something that money cannot buy.
A spiritual legacy.
Some people leave behind houses.
Some leave behind land.
Some leave behind savings, jewelry, or treasured possessions.
But GrandMamma left something that continues bearing fruit.
She left behind a testimony of faith and a legacy of prayer.
And that is a legacy worth sharing with the world.
🕊️ MAYBE YOUR GRANDMOTHER IS ALREADY IN HEAVEN
Perhaps you're reading this with tears in your eyes.
Your grandmother has been gone for years.
You can still picture her face.
You can almost hear her voice.
You remember her kitchen, the way she laughed, the way she corrected you when you misbehaved, and the way she loved you even when you didn't deserve it.
Maybe you wish you could sit beside her just one more time.
Maybe you wish you could hear her pray your name again.
Maybe there are things you never got to tell her.
"Grandma, thank you for loving me."
"Thank you for putting up with me."
"Thank you for praying when I didn't even want to hear about God."
"Thank you for believing that God had something better for my life."
I understand those feelings.
And if your grandmother is no longer with you, I hope this book will bring back some of the beautiful memories you carry in your heart.
But I also hope it will do something more.
I hope it will challenge you to consider the legacy you're leaving for those who come after you.
Because the story doesn't have to end with GrandMamma.
You can become the praying parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, mentor, or faithful friend whose influence changes someone else's life.
🔥 AND WHAT ABOUT THE GRANDCHILD WHO IS STILL RUNNING FROM GOD?
Perhaps you are a grandmother reading this today.
You've prayed for your children.
You've prayed for your grandchildren.
You've taught them Scripture.
You've invited them to church.
You've done everything you knew to do.
But one of them has walked away from the faith.
Maybe that grandchild is struggling with addiction, destructive relationships, bitterness, or decisions that have left you heartbroken.
And you wonder whether your prayers are making any difference.
Let me encourage you.
Don't stop praying.
But remember that prayer is not a way of controlling another person's choices.
God calls us to love, teach, encourage, and intercede. Each person must ultimately respond to Him.
Continue to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ.
Keep the door open for honest conversations.
Let your grandchildren know they can come to you without being humiliated or condemned.
And when you don't know what to say, ask God for wisdom.
You may not see every answer you desire in your lifetime.
But your faithful example can still plant seeds of truth, love, and hope.
Galatians 6:9 reminds us:
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."
🌎 THIS BOOK IS FOR MORE THAN JUST GRANDMOTHERS
I wrote GrandMamma's Prayers to honor Bertha Meriwether.
But the message reaches far beyond my own family.
This book is for the grandson who remembers the woman who raised him when his parents couldn't.
It's for the granddaughter whose grandmother was her first Sunday school teacher.
It's for the adult who now realizes how much sacrifice was hidden behind GrandMamma's smile.
It's for the young parent trying to establish a foundation of faith for the next generation.
It's for the grandmother who wonders whether her prayers matter.
It's for the person who never knew a loving grandmother but longs to understand the kind of faith and unconditional love that can transform a family.
And it's for anyone who has ever wondered:
"DOES PRAYER REALLY CHANGE ANYTHING?"
My testimony is that prayer matters.
God hears.
God cares.
And the influence of a faithful life can reach further than we ever imagine.
📚 AN INVITATION FROM MY HEART
I want to invite you to read GrandMamma's Prayers (2nd Edition).
Not merely because I wrote it.
But because I believe there are people around the world who need to be reminded of the power of prayer and the value of a godly legacy.
You may laugh as you read.
You may cry.
You may remember someone you haven't thought about in years.
You may find yourself picking up the telephone to call your grandmother.
Or perhaps you'll simply close the book, bow your head, and whisper:
"Lord, thank You for the grandmother who prayed for me."
If you have a grandmother who is still living, consider giving her a copy.
If you know someone who was raised by a praying grandmother, share this testimony with them.
If you are a grandparent, consider reading it with your family and talking about the spiritual legacy you hope to leave.
And if you're someone who believes your life was changed because somebody prayed for you, I especially want you to know:
You are not alone.
I am one of those people, too.

🙏 A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR OUR GRANDMOTHERS
Heavenly Father,
Today, I thank You for the grandmothers and great-grandmothers whose prayers, sacrifices, love, and unwavering faith helped shape our lives.
Thank You for the women who prayed when times were difficult, who trusted You when resources were scarce, and who taught us that Your Word remains true even when the world around us changes.
Thank You especially for my GrandMamma, Bertha Meriwether.
Thank You for the example she set, the love she demonstrated, and the prayers she offered for generations of her family.
Lord, comfort those who are grieving the loss of their grandmothers.
Strengthen those who are still praying for children and grandchildren.
And help us become people whose faith and love will bless generations we may never live to see.
May we never forget those who prayed for us.
And may we never stop praying for those who come after us.
In the precious name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
❤️ NOW, I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Let me ask you three questions.
1. What did you call your grandmother? Grandma, Granny, Nana, Lola, Abuela, Big Mama, GrandMamma, or something else?
2. What is one thing your grandmother taught you that you still carry in your heart today?
3. Can you honestly say, "I am where I am today because somebody prayed for me"?
If so, I'd love for you to share your testimony in the comments.
Tell us about that special woman.
Tell us what she meant to you.
Tell us how her prayers influenced your life.
And if she's still living, don't wait until tomorrow to tell her how much you love her.
Let's fill the comments with testimonies of grandmothers whose faith, love, and prayers changed lives.
Because somewhere in the world today, another grandmother needs to know that her prayers matter.
PLEASE SHARE THIS MESSAGE. SOMEBODY'S GRANDMOTHER DESERVES TO BE REMEMBERED! ❤️
