You’re Hurting. I Understand. But Suicide Is Not the Answer

Sometimes a book needs more than a description.

Sometimes you need to see the message. Hear the heart behind it. Understand why it was written.

Today, we are pleased to announce that the official video preview for James Langston’s newest book is now available on YouTube:

YOU’RE HURTING. I UNDERSTAND. BUT SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER

Hope, Healing, and the God Who Never Stopped Loving You

This is not simply a promotional video.

It is an introduction to a book written about one of the most difficult subjects a person or family may ever face:

Suicide.

WHAT DO YOU SAY WHEN SOMEONE WANTS TO DIE?

Imagine hearing someone you love say:

“I don’t want to live anymore.”

Maybe it is your son or daughter.

Your husband or wife.

A friend.

A fellow veteran.

A church member.

Or perhaps those words have quietly been running through your own mind.

What happens next matters.

What we say matters.

What we do matters.

And sometimes, simply being willing to sit beside someone and listen can matter more than we realize.

That is the heart behind You’re Hurting. I Understand. But Suicide Is Not the Answer.

MORE THAN “JUST HAVE FAITH”

As Christians, we believe in prayer. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe God still heals, restores, comforts, and changes lives.

But this book does not tell someone experiencing a suicidal crisis to “just pray harder.”

Nor does it suggest that professional mental-health care represents a failure of faith.

The nearly 400-page book brings together research-informed suicide-prevention principles, practical crisis guidance, professional-care resources, pastoral experience, compassionate conversation, and Christian hope.

It addresses depression, trauma, grief, PTSD, loneliness, invisible wounds, suicidal thinking, crisis intervention, professional treatment, recovery after an attempt, suicide loss, and helping someone you love.

The book also includes a Personal Safety Plan, crisis resources, practical guidance, Scriptures, and prayers.

WHY I WROTE IT

After more than five decades of Christian life and ministry, 27 years of service in the United States Navy, years of pastoral ministry, missionary work, and writing more than 40 books, I knew this subject could not be approached casually.

Experience alone was not enough.

Suicide involves potential life-and-death situations.

That is why this project was researched with contemporary suicide-prevention principles and professional resources in mind while remaining written in language ordinary people can understand.

I am not presenting myself as a psychiatrist, psychologist, or licensed mental-health clinician.

I am a pastor, veteran, missionary, author, husband, father, grandfather—and someone who believes hurting people deserve more than clichΓ©s and condemnation.

Sometimes they need somebody willing to pull up a chair and listen.

THIS VIDEO MAY NOT BE FOR YOU—BUT IT MAY BE FOR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Perhaps you are doing well today.

Thank God for that.

But somebody in your circle may not be.

Someone may be smiling publicly while privately fighting a battle nobody knows exists.

A parent may be frightened about a child.

A veteran may be struggling silently.

A pastor may be trying to help someone in crisis.

A friend may have heard words last night that they cannot get out of their mind:

“I don’t want to be here anymore.”

FOUR THINGS I WANT THE HURTING PERSON TO KNOW

Your pain matters.

You are worth listening to.

Help is available.

PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP.

Whatever happened yesterday does not have to determine tomorrow.

A terrible night does not have the authority to write the final chapter of your life.

There are still chapters left to be written.
