GOD NEVER ASKED YOU TO MOVE THE MOUNTAIN—ONLY TO TRUST HIM!

Sometimes the greatest demonstration of faith isn't watching something move. It's obeying God when nothing seems to be moving at all.

Scripture Focus: Matthew 14:22–31 | Hebrews 11:6 | Proverbs 3:5–6

By Pastor James Langston | Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International (POMI)

This afternoon, while working out in our home gym, something came into my spirit that I believe the Lord wants me to share with you.

And I believe this message is especially for someone who has been struggling with their faith, questioning God's instructions, wondering whether their prayers are being heard, or asking themselves a question that has troubled Believers for generations:

"Lord, I've been doing everything You told me to do. So why isn't anything happening?"

Perhaps you've prayed for years. You've believed. You've waited. You've tried to remain faithful. Yet the circumstances surrounding your life haven't changed.

Maybe you've even begun to wonder whether you misunderstood God in the first place.

Before you give up, I want to share two stories with you. One is an illustration about a teacher and his student. The other comes directly from the Word of God.

And when we bring them together, I believe you'll discover something that could change how you approach faith, obedience, and your relationship with Jesus Christ.

THE BOULDER THAT WOULDN'T MOVE

There is a story about a teacher who was preparing to leave on a journey that would keep him away for two years.

Before departing, he called one of his students to him and gave him a rather unusual assignment.

"Every day," the teacher instructed, "I want you to go to that enormous boulder and push against it as hard as you can, for as long as you can. Do this faithfully until I return."

The student agreed.

The following morning, he went to the boulder, placed both hands against its rough surface, planted his feet firmly on the ground, and pushed.

Nothing happened.

The next morning, he returned and pushed again.

Still nothing.

Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Months became years.

Through sunshine and rain, through discouragement and exhaustion, the student faithfully returned to that boulder and pushed with everything he had.

But the enormous stone never moved.

Not one inch.

Finally, after two long years, the teacher returned.

When the student saw him, he fell at his feet, overwhelmed with disappointment.

"Teacher! Teacher! I'm so sorry! I did everything you asked. Every day I pushed against that boulder with all my strength. But I failed you. I couldn't move it!"

The teacher looked at his student and responded with words that left him stunned.

"My son, I told you to PUSH the boulder. I never told you to MOVE it."

Think about that for a moment.

The student had spent two years measuring his success by something his teacher had never required of him!

And isn't that precisely what so many of us do in our walk with God?

We measure our obedience by visible results.

We measure our faith by answered prayers.

We measure God's approval by whether circumstances change according to our expectations.

But what if God is doing something far greater than moving the boulder?

What if He's strengthening the person who's pushing it?

Consider what happened to that student during those two years. His muscles grew stronger. His endurance increased. His discipline deepened. His determination was tested.

And perhaps most importantly, he learned to remain faithful even when he couldn't see the results of his obedience.

The boulder hadn't moved.

But the student had changed.

Friend, sometimes God is accomplishing His greatest work, not in the circumstances surrounding you, but in the heart within you.

PETER, THE BOAT, AND A QUESTION WORTH ASKING

Now let's turn to Matthew 14:22–31.

The disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee when they encountered strong winds and turbulent waters.

During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea.

Naturally, the disciples were frightened.

But Jesus spoke:

"Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." — Matthew 14:27 (KJV)

Then Peter made an extraordinary request.

"Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water."

Jesus answered with one word.

"Come."

And Peter did something remarkable.

He stepped out of the boat.

Onto the water.

In the middle of a storm!

Now here's the question I want you to consider:

WHY DIDN'T THE OTHER DISCIPLES GET OUT OF THE BOAT?

There were twelve disciples aboard that vessel. All witnessed Jesus walking on the water. All heard His reassuring words.

Yet Scripture records only Peter asking Jesus for permission to come to Him.

Why?

The Bible doesn't tell us what the other disciples were thinking, and we shouldn't pretend that it does.

Perhaps some were frightened. Perhaps others were simply astonished by what they were witnessing.

But this much we know:

Peter asked. Jesus answered. Peter obeyed.

And something happened that defied every natural law governing the waters beneath his feet.

Peter walked on water!

Not because he possessed some extraordinary power.

Not because the storm had stopped.

Not because the waves had suddenly become calm.

But because Jesus had said, "Come."

And Peter trusted the One who spoke.

That's faith!

THE MIRACLE BEGAN WITH ONE STEP

I want you to notice something else.

Jesus didn't explain to Peter how walking on water would work.

He didn't provide a detailed itinerary.

He didn't promise that the wind would immediately stop blowing.

He didn't hand Peter a five-step instructional manual entitled How to Walk on Water Without Getting Wet.

He simply said, "Come."

And Peter stepped out.

How many opportunities have we missed because we insisted that God explain everything before we would obey Him?

How many doors have remained unopened because we demanded to see what was on the other side before reaching for the handle?

How many assignments have gone unfinished because we wanted guarantees instead of exercising faith?

Some of us are waiting for perfect circumstances.

We're waiting until the money is right.

Until the family agrees.

Until the economy improves.

Until we feel qualified.

Until every obstacle disappears.

Until we're absolutely certain that nothing could possibly go wrong.

But here's something I've learned during my years of walking with the Lord:

If you insist on knowing every detail before taking the first step, you may never leave the boat.

God has revealed His will through Scripture, and He gives wisdom and guidance as we seek Him. But He doesn't promise to reveal every detail of tomorrow before we obey Him today.

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Notice that Scripture doesn't say we must understand everything.

It says we must TRUST Him.

BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BEGIN TO SINK?

Now we come to another important part of Peter's experience.

Peter began walking toward Jesus.

But then something happened.

He noticed the wind.

He became afraid.

And he began to sink.

Some people focus so much on Peter sinking that they overlook the remarkable fact that he actually walked on the water!

Yes, Peter's faith faltered.

Yes, fear overtook him.

Yes, he began to go under.

But what happened next?

Matthew 14:30–31 tells us:

"But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him..."

Did you catch that?

IMMEDIATELY!

Jesus didn't wait for Peter to disappear beneath the waves.

He didn't lecture him while he struggled.

He didn't tell Peter to figure out how to save himself.

He stretched out His hand and caught him.

Now, Jesus did address Peter's doubt. Faith matters, and our trust in Him matters.

But even in Peter's moment of weakness, Jesus was there.

And that's something somebody reading this desperately needs to hear today.

Your moment of weakness does not place you beyond the reach of your Savior.

You may have stepped out in faith and discovered that the journey is harder than you expected.

You may have started a ministry, a business, a marriage, a family, or a new chapter of life believing God was directing your steps.

And now the winds are howling.

The waves are rising.

Your confidence is shaking.

And you're wondering whether you're going to make it.

Friend, if you belong to Jesus Christ, don't forget whose hand you can reach for.

Cry out to Him!

The same Savior who reached for Peter is still able to sustain His children today.

His help may not always come in the form or timing we expect, but His faithfulness is not diminished by the storms we encounter.

FAITH IS NOT PRESUMPTION

Now, before somebody runs out and attempts to walk across the nearest swimming pool, we need to establish something extremely important.

Peter didn't jump into the sea because he wanted to demonstrate how courageous he was.

He stepped out because Jesus had told him to come.

There's a tremendous difference between acting in faith and acting presumptuously.

Faith responds to God's Word.

Presumption expects God to endorse something He never instructed us to do.

Not every idea that enters our minds comes from God.

Not every opportunity is a divine assignment.

Not every strong emotion is the leading of the Holy Spirit.

That's why Scripture tells us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1).

Before making a major decision, seek the Lord in prayer. Examine what Scripture teaches. Ask for godly counsel. Consider your responsibilities and the consequences of your actions.

And remember this:

God will never lead you to do something that contradicts His revealed Word.

We must be certain that we're following the Lord, rather than simply asking Him to bless our own ambitions.

But once His direction becomes clear, we shouldn't allow fear, procrastination, or endless demands for certainty to keep us from obeying.

THERE IS AN ENEMY WHO OPPOSES YOUR FAITH

Another truth we cannot overlook is that following God's will does not exempt us from spiritual opposition.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not merely against flesh and blood, but against spiritual wickedness.

The enemy would love nothing more than to discourage you from trusting God.

He will exploit your fears.

He will magnify your doubts.

He will tempt you to interpret every delay as defeat and every difficulty as evidence that God has abandoned you.

But we must also exercise discernment. Not every hardship is a direct attack from Satan. Some difficulties arise from living in a fallen world, from our own decisions, or simply from circumstances beyond our control.

Nevertheless, the answer remains the same.

Stand firm in Christ.

Continue in prayer.

Remain grounded in Scripture.

And refuse to allow fear to become the governing authority of your life.

The wind may be real, but so is the Savior.

SOMETIMES YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS SIMPLY TO KEEP PUSHING

Now let's bring our two stories together.

The student was instructed to push.

Peter was instructed to come.

Neither was given a guarantee of an easy assignment.

Neither was told to wait until every circumstance was favorable.

Their responsibility was to respond faithfully to the instruction they had received.

And that's where some of you are today.

You've been pushing against a boulder that hasn't moved.

You've been praying for a loved one who still hasn't surrendered to Christ.

You've been laboring in a ministry that seems to produce little visible fruit.

You've been doing what you believe God has called you to do, but the progress is painfully slow.

Perhaps you've become discouraged because you're measuring your faithfulness by results you cannot control.

Listen carefully.

God has never required you to accomplish what only He can accomplish.

You cannot save a soul. Only Jesus Christ can do that.

You cannot change another person's heart. That's God's work.

You cannot manufacture spiritual fruit through human determination.

And you cannot force God's promises to unfold according to your personal timetable.

But you CAN pray.

You CAN believe.

You CAN obey.

You CAN love.

You CAN serve.

You CAN take the next faithful step.

And sometimes, when all is said and done, that's exactly what God has asked of you.

As Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:6:

"I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase."

Our responsibility is faithfulness.

The increase belongs to God.

A PERSONAL WORD FROM MY HEART

After more than five decades of knowing the Lord, I can tell you that there have been times when His direction was unmistakably clear, and other times when I had to move forward trusting Him one day at a time.

In missionary work, particularly among communities where needs are enormous and resources are often limited, you quickly discover that you cannot solve every problem.

There are families who need food.

Children who need an education.

Communities struggling to recover from storms and flooding.

People who need encouragement, prayer, and, most importantly, the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Through Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, we continue doing what we can with what God places in our hands.

Sometimes the work moves quickly.

Sometimes it moves slowly.

And sometimes it feels as though we're pushing against a boulder that simply refuses to budge.

But our calling isn't to manufacture miracles.

Our calling is to be faithful to the One who called us.

We plant. We water. We pray. We serve. We trust God for the increase.

And tomorrow, by His grace, we get up and do it again.

SO, WHAT IS GOD ASKING YOU TO DO TODAY?

Perhaps you've been waiting for a sign.

Perhaps you've been asking God to remove every obstacle before you'll take the next step.

Perhaps you're afraid of failing.

Or perhaps you've been faithful for a long time, but you're exhausted because nothing seems to be changing.

I want to leave you with three questions.

1. Are you trying to move something God only asked you to push?

Stop carrying responsibility for results that belong to Him. Be faithful in what He's entrusted to you.

2. Are you remaining in the boat because you're afraid of the storm?

If God has clearly directed you to act, don't allow fear to make your decisions. Trust Him enough to take the next step.

3. Have you started sinking because you've taken your eyes off Jesus?

Then cry out to Him. Don't let shame, disappointment, or pride keep you from reaching for His hand.

And remember Hebrews 11:6:

"But without faith it is impossible to please him..."

Faith doesn't mean pretending that difficulties don't exist.

Faith means trusting God in the middle of those difficulties.

It doesn't mean we never ask questions.

It means we continue trusting the character and promises of God even when we don't have every answer.

And it certainly doesn't mean that every decision we make will be perfect.

It means our confidence rests in Jesus Christ, not in our ability to control the outcome.

MY FINAL THOUGHT: GET OUT OF THE BOAT!

Friend, I don't know what your particular boulder looks like.

I don't know what storm is raging around you.

I don't know how long you've been praying, waiting, believing, or struggling.

But I do know this:

The God who sustained Peter is the same God we serve today.

If He has instructed you to push, keep pushing.

If He has instructed you to wait, wait faithfully.

If He has instructed you to go, then go.

And if He has said, "Come," don't allow the wind and waves to convince you that the boat is safer than obedience.

Just make certain it is His voice you're following.

You may not see the entire road ahead.

You may not understand every delay.

You may not witness the results you've been praying for in the time you've expected.

But God sees what you cannot see.

He knows what you do not know.

And He is able to accomplish what you could never accomplish through your own strength.

Stop measuring God's faithfulness by whether the boulder moves.

Stop measuring your faith by whether the storm disappears.

Start measuring your obedience by whether you're faithfully following the One who called you.

Because sometimes the greatest miracle isn't that the mountain moved.

Sometimes the miracle is that, after everything you've been through, you're still standing, still believing, and still trusting Jesus!

And that, my friend, is worth thinking about.

LET'S PRAY

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us that faith is not always about seeing the results of our obedience, but about trusting the One who has called us.

Lord, there are people reading this message who are tired. Some are discouraged. Others are frightened by the storms surrounding their lives.

Some have been pushing against the same boulder for years, wondering whether their labor has accomplished anything.

Strengthen them today.

Give them wisdom to recognize Your voice, courage to obey Your Word, and patience to trust Your timing.

Help us distinguish between Your direction and our own desires.

When fear overwhelms us, remind us that Jesus is near.

When our faith begins to falter, teach us to cry out, "Lord, save me!"

And when the results of our labor remain unseen, help us remember that our work in You is never in vain.

Keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith.

In His precious and holy name we pray.

Amen and Amen!
