✝️ DON'T PUT JESUS ON THE SHELF UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE!
Part 4 of 4 | Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: The Choices That Shape Eternity
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 3:15 (KJV)
"To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts."
THERE'S A SHELF IN MANY PEOPLE'S LIVES THAT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT
It's not necessarily in the living room.
It's not in the kitchen.
And you probably won't find it hanging on a bedroom wall.
But it's there.
It's the shelf where people place things they intend to deal with later.
A difficult conversation.
An apology.
A neglected responsibility.
A promise they made years ago.
And for some people, sitting on that shelf is something far more important.
Their relationship with Jesus Christ.
They know about Him.
They may have attended church as children.
They remember their grandmother reading the Bible.
They know the words to familiar hymns.
They may even believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
But when it comes to surrendering their lives to Him, their response remains the same.
"Not right now, Lord. Maybe later."
I'M NOT REJECTING JESUS—JUST NOT READY YET
Have you ever heard someone say that?
Perhaps you've said it yourself.
"I'll get saved when I get older."
"I'll start going to church when things settle down."
"I want to enjoy my life first."
"I have some things I need to straighten out before I come to God."
My friend, let me ask you something.
If you could straighten out everything in your life without Jesus, why would you need a Savior?
Jesus didn't come into the world because humanity had already solved the problem of sin.
He came because we needed redemption.
Romans 5:8 declares:
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Notice those words.
While we were yet sinners.
You don't have to make yourself perfect before coming to Christ.
You come to Him acknowledging your need for His grace.
THE DANGER ISN'T ALWAYS REJECTION—SOMETIMES IT'S DELAY
Not everyone who postpones a relationship with Jesus Christ is openly hostile toward Christianity.
Some genuinely intend to respond someday.
They simply assume there will always be another opportunity.
Another Sunday.
Another revival.
Another sermon.
Another conversation.
Another year.
But Scripture never encourages us to postpone responding to God.
Second Corinthians 6:2 says:
"Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."
That isn't an invitation to panic.
It's an invitation to respond.
Why postpone receiving the grace, forgiveness, peace, and new life that Jesus Christ offers today?
You don't have to wait until you're elderly.
You don't have to wait until tragedy strikes.
You don't have to wait until every question has been answered.
And you certainly don't have to wait until your life is falling apart.
JESUS IS NOT AN EMERGENCY-ONLY SAVIOR
Some people treat their relationship with God like a fire extinguisher.
They know where it is.
They hope they never need it.
But when everything begins falling apart, they reach for it.
When sickness comes, they pray.
When financial trouble arrives, they pray.
When a relationship collapses, they pray.
And when the immediate crisis passes, God is placed back on the shelf.
But Jesus Christ did not come merely to help us survive emergencies.
He came to reconcile us to God and give us new life.
In John 10:10, Jesus said:
"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
That abundant life is not a promise of wealth, comfort, or freedom from hardship.
It is a life transformed by knowing Him.
Jesus doesn't want to be an occasional visitor in your life. He calls you to follow Him.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO HAVE WALKED AWAY?
Perhaps you once served God faithfully.
You attended church.
You prayed.
You studied Scripture.
You shared your testimony.
But somewhere along the journey, something happened.
You were hurt.
You became discouraged.
You experienced disappointment.
Or you gradually allowed other priorities to replace your spiritual commitments.
And now, years have passed.
You still believe in God, but your relationship with Him isn't what it once was.
Let me encourage you.
You can turn back to Him.
Remember the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15.
The son wandered away, wasted his inheritance, and eventually found himself in desperate circumstances.
But when he returned, his father received him with compassion.
What a beautiful picture of God's mercy toward those who repent and return.
You don't have to pretend that everything is fine.
You can acknowledge where you've been.
You can confess your sins.
You can seek forgiveness.
And you can begin walking with God again.
THE CHOICE IS YOURS—BUT DON'T CONFUSE CHOICE WITH CONTROL
Throughout this series, we've talked about yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
We've talked about mistakes, opportunities, dreams, and decisions.
And now we come to the most important question.
What will you do with Jesus Christ?
God has given human beings the responsibility to respond to His truth.
You can accept His invitation.
You can reject it.
Or you can postpone your response.
But while your choices are meaningful, you do not control every circumstance of life, nor can you save yourself through personal effort.
Salvation is God's gift of grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us:
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Your past does not have to keep you separated from God.
Your present circumstances do not disqualify you from His mercy.
And your future can take a new direction when you surrender your life to Christ.
But the decision to respond is not one you should endlessly postpone.
BEFORE YOU CLOSE THIS PAGE
Let me speak to you personally.
I don't know your name.
I don't know everything you've experienced.
I don't know the disappointments you've endured, the mistakes you've made, or the questions you've carried for years.
But I do know this.
Jesus Christ loves you.
He died for our sins and rose again.
And the invitation to turn to Him in repentance and faith remains open today.
You may have put Him on the shelf years ago.
You may have convinced yourself that you would get serious about your spiritual life when the time was right.
But what if the right time is now?
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. But today, you can respond to Jesus Christ.
Don't allow pride to keep you away.
Don't allow shame to convince you that forgiveness is impossible.
Don't allow disappointment with imperfect Christians to prevent you from knowing a perfect Savior.
And don't assume you must have every detail of your future figured out before taking the first step.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28:
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
HE DIDN'T SAY, "COME WHEN YOU'VE FIXED EVERYTHING."
He said, "COME UNTO ME."
🙏 AN INVITATION TO RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST
If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I invite you to turn to Him today.
Acknowledge your need for forgiveness.
Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead.
Repent and place your faith in Him.
Romans 10:9 teaches the importance of confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection.
If you're ready, you can express your faith in prayer.
A PRAYER OF REPENTANCE AND FAITH
Heavenly Father,
I come before You acknowledging that I have sinned and need Your forgiveness.
I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that He rose again.
I turn away from my sins and place my faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.
Forgive me, cleanse me, and help me begin a new life of obedience and faith.
Teach me to follow You, to understand Your Word, and to live according to Your will.
Thank You for Your mercy, grace, and love.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Remember, the prayer itself is not a magical formula. Salvation rests in God's grace through genuine faith in Jesus Christ.
If you've made that decision, begin reading the Bible, pray regularly, and connect with a faithful Christian congregation where you can grow spiritually.
❤️ ONE LAST QUESTION
If Jesus Christ has been sitting on the shelf of your life, what are you waiting for?
Not because someone is trying to frighten you.
Not because someone wants to pressure you.
But because the One who gave His life for you is worthy of more than whatever time you have left over.
DON'T GIVE JESUS THE LEFTOVERS OF YOUR LIFE WHEN HE HAS OFFERED YOU THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE.
And if you already know Him, perhaps today is the day to renew your commitment to following Him faithfully.
🙏 CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving us through our mistakes, failures, doubts, and disappointments. Help us recognize the value of each day and the importance of our eternal relationship with You. Give those who are searching the courage to respond to Your invitation, and restore those who have wandered away. May we never become so occupied with the temporary things of life that we neglect what matters eternally. In Your precious name, Amen.
Reflection: Have you ever postponed something spiritually important and later wished you had acted sooner?
Your testimony may encourage someone else to take a meaningful step today.
