AND THE PEOPLE CRIED, GIVE US A KING!

Two Volumes. One Presidency. A Nation's Questions. A Timeless Biblical Warning.

Was Barack Obama a transformational president who guided America through one of the most challenging periods in modern history?

Or was he a leader whose policies, priorities, and decisions contributed to divisions that continue shaping the United States today?

More importantly, what can America learn from the Obama years—and what does the Bible teach us about the responsibilities of leadership, the expectations of citizens, and the dangers of placing too much faith in any human leader?

These are not merely political questions. They are questions of history, leadership, accountability, citizenship, faith, and the future of a nation.

And they are at the heart of an extraordinary two-volume examination by James Langston, author, retired U.S. Navy veteran, and founder and Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International (POMI).

AND THE PEOPLE CRIED, GIVE US A KING!

A Two-Volume Journey Through Power, Politics, Faith, and America's Future.

A Cry That Echoes Across Thousands of Years

"And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them." — I Samuel 8:7 (KJV)

Thousands of years ago, the children of Israel approached the prophet Samuel with a demand that would forever alter their nation's history.

They wanted a king.

They wanted someone they could see. Someone who would lead their armies, make their decisions, defend their interests, and give them the kind of national identity they saw in neighboring nations.

God warned them about the consequences. Nevertheless, the people insisted.

Their demand revealed something far deeper than a preference for a different form of government. It exposed the danger of placing expectations upon human leadership that rightfully belonged to God.

Fast-forward thousands of years. Different nation. Different government. Different circumstances. But an enduring question remains: What happens when a people expect a political leader to deliver what no human being can ultimately provide?

That question provides the biblical foundation for this compelling two-volume study.

Barack Obama: The Man, the Movement, and the Presidency

In November 2008, America witnessed a historic moment.

Barack Hussein Obama II was elected the 44th President of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office.

For millions of Americans, his election represented hope, opportunity, progress, and the possibility of a different national future.

For others, his political philosophy, proposed policies, and governing priorities raised serious questions about the direction of the country.

But behind the campaign speeches, enthusiastic crowds, political opposition, and worldwide attention stood a more complicated story.

How did Barack Obama rise so rapidly to national prominence?

What role did the news media play in introducing him to the American people?

How did his administration respond to the economic crisis, America's wars, domestic policy disputes, and changing international relationships?

What did his presidency accomplish? Which decisions remain controversial? And what lessons should future generations draw from those eight years?

These books invite readers to examine those questions rather than accept someone else's conclusions.

VOLUME I: THE RISE AND PRESIDENCY OF BARACK OBAMA

From an extraordinary political ascent to eight years in the White House.

Volume I, covering Chapters 1–11, explores the events, personalities, political environment, and decisions that helped define Barack Obama's emergence as a national leader and his presidency.

Readers are invited to consider his political development, campaign messaging, public expectations, selection of Joe Biden as his running mate, and the challenges awaiting his administration.

The examination includes the Great Recession and economic recovery efforts, health care reform, foreign policy, relationships with Israel and Iran, and the political and cultural debates surrounding his leadership.

It also considers the relationship between presidential promises and the realities of governing.

Supporters point to expanded health insurance coverage, economic recovery measures, and other policy achievements. Critics question the costs, effectiveness, constitutional implications, and longer-term consequences of particular decisions.

The objective is not to pretend those disagreements never existed.

It is to understand why they existed, what the historical record shows, and why their consequences matter.

VOLUME II: THE LEGACY, LESSONS, AND FUTURE OF AMERICA

The presidency ended. The questions did not.

Volume II, covering Chapters 12–20 and the book's supporting reference materials, takes readers beyond the daily headlines and political battles of the Obama administration.

It examines the longer-term significance of the presidency and the questions it raises about America's institutions, cultural identity, political disagreements, international responsibilities, and future.

What happens when campaign enthusiasm meets governing reality?

How should Americans evaluate presidential decisions years after those decisions were made?

Can citizens recognize genuine accomplishments while still questioning policies they oppose?

Can people disagree about a president without surrendering their commitment to truth, fairness, and respect for one another?

And perhaps most importantly:

Have Americans become so dependent upon political personalities that they sometimes forget the principles, responsibilities, and institutions upon which constitutional government depends?

Volume II encourages readers to think beyond a single president or political party.

Because every administration eventually becomes history.

The lessons it leaves behind, however, can influence generations.

This Is More Than a Book About Barack Obama

Let us be clear about something.

This two-volume work is not intended as a political campaign, a partisan endorsement, or an exercise in condemning one man.

It is an invitation to examine leadership through history, documented events, public policy, citizenship, and biblical reflection.

The Obama presidency provides the historical setting. But the questions reach far beyond Barack Obama.

They apply to presidents before him, presidents after him, members of Congress, governors, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens.

No elected official is beyond legitimate scrutiny.

No administration is exempt from accountability.

And no political leader—regardless of party, popularity, race, background, or accomplishments—should be expected to possess the wisdom, authority, or perfection that belongs to God alone.

The Bible reminds us:

"It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man." — Psalm 118:8 (KJV)

That passage does not instruct Christians to abandon civic responsibility, refuse public service, or disregard the importance of government.

It reminds us to maintain the proper perspective.

Respect leadership. Examine its decisions. Fulfill your responsibilities as a citizen. But reserve your ultimate trust for the Lord.

A Challenge to Every Reader

Whether you admired Barack Obama, disagreed with his administration, voted for him, voted against him, or were too young to participate in either election, these volumes offer an opportunity to revisit an important period of American history.

You do not have to agree with every interpretation to benefit from serious historical examination.

In fact, thoughtful disagreement is one reason such examinations matter.

We should be willing to ask difficult questions, investigate the evidence, acknowledge documented accomplishments, examine legitimate criticisms, and reconsider assumptions when the facts require it.

America's history is too important to be reduced to slogans.

Its future is too important to be entrusted to unquestioning political loyalty.

And our children and grandchildren deserve more than inherited arguments. They deserve the opportunity to understand the decisions, circumstances, and consequences that shaped the country they will inherit.

Why Read Both Volumes?

Because understanding a presidency requires more than remembering an election.

Volume I explores the rise, leadership, policies, and governing years.

Volume II considers the legacy, lessons, and broader implications.

Together, they connect the historical record with enduring questions about political power, personal responsibility, faith, and national character.

The volumes are especially relevant for readers interested in American history, presidential leadership, public policy, biblical principles, civic responsibility, and the relationship between faith and government.

They also provide substantial material for individual reading, thoughtful discussion, and further research.

The Most Important Question of All

In I Samuel 8, the people demanded a king.

They believed a change in human leadership would provide the security, direction, and national standing they desired.

But Scripture reveals that their deeper problem could not be solved simply by changing who occupied the throne.

That is a lesson worth remembering in every generation.

Political leaders can enact laws, negotiate agreements, administer institutions, and influence the direction of a country.

They cannot redeem the human heart.

They cannot replace the righteousness of God.

And they cannot provide the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ.

The lesson is not that leadership doesn't matter. It matters tremendously. The lesson is that leadership must never become a substitute for faith in God, personal responsibility, or sound judgment.

Two Volumes Worth Reading. Questions Worth Asking. Lessons Worth Remembering.

We invite you to discover AND THE PEOPLE CRIED, GIVE US A KING!, by James Langston.

Read the history. Examine the decisions. Consider the disagreements. Reflect upon the biblical principles.

And most importantly, think carefully about what yesterday's decisions can teach us about tomorrow's responsibilities.

If you enjoy history, thoughtful examination, biblical reflection, and books that challenge you to think beyond the headlines, consider adding both volumes to your reading collection.

And please share this post with someone who enjoys studying American history, political leadership, and the lessons that can be drawn from Scripture.

Because the question is not simply who occupied the White House from 2009 to 2017.

The greater question is what we have learned—and what we will do with those lessons.

To God be the glory!
