📖 WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT — SEPTEMBER 26
God’s Faithfulness in Temptation
From Words of Encouragement (4th Edition) by James Langston
There are some battles we talk about openly.
And then there are those battles that happen where almost nobody can see them.
Temptation is one of them.
It doesn't matter how long you've been saved.
It doesn't matter how many Scriptures you know.
It doesn't matter whether you're a pastor, missionary, deacon, teacher, new believer, or someone who has walked with the Lord for decades.
WE ALL FACE TEMPTATION.
But today's devotional contains some wonderful news:
You do not face it alone.
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13
Three words in that verse deserve our attention:
GOD IS FAITHFUL.
Not sometimes faithful.
Not faithful only when we're strong.
Not faithful only when we're having a good day.
GOD IS FAITHFUL.
✝️ TEMPTATION IS PART OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE
Today's devotional reminds us:
“Temptation is a universal part of the human experience, yet we are not left to battle it alone.”
That's important because temptation sometimes produces another weapon against us:
Shame.
We begin thinking:
"Why am I struggling with this?"
"What's wrong with me?"
"A real Christian wouldn't be tempted like this."
But being tempted is not the same thing as yielding to temptation.
Even Jesus was tempted.
Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Christ:
“...was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
The enemy would love to convince you that the existence of temptation means you've already lost the battle.
YOU HAVEN'T.
The battle may simply have begun.
🛡️ GOD HAS NOT ABANDONED YOU IN THE FIGHT
One of the greatest truths in 1 Corinthians 10:13 is that temptation doesn't somehow catch God by surprise.
He sees what you're facing.
He knows your weaknesses.
He knows your history.
He knows the circumstances surrounding you.
And He remains faithful.
As today's devotional says:
“God's faithfulness ensures that no temptation will ever be beyond our ability to resist with His help.”
Notice those last three words:
WITH HIS HELP.
That changes everything.
Christian victory was never intended to be accomplished through human willpower alone.
🚪 LOOK FOR THE WAY OUT
Sometimes we pray:
“Lord, deliver me from this temptation!”
while standing directly beside the exit He has already provided.
First Corinthians 10:13 continues by saying that God:
“...will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Sometimes the way out is remarkably practical.
Turn the television off.
Close the browser.
Delete the message.
Leave the room.
End the conversation.
Walk away.
Call somebody.
Open your Bible.
Start praying.
Stop going somewhere you already know weakens you.
Don't ask God for strength to remain somewhere He's already given you permission to leave.
TAKE THE EXIT.
📖 GOD HAS GIVEN US HIS WORD
Today's devotional reminds us:
“He equips us through the power of His Spirit and the truth of His Word.”
Jesus demonstrated this during His temptation in the wilderness.
Again and again His response was:
“IT IS WRITTEN.”
There is tremendous power in knowing what God has said before temptation arrives.
You don't wait until the battle begins to start looking for your weapon.
Read the Word.
Study the Word.
Memorize the Word.
Meditate upon the Word.
Fill your heart with Scripture.
The Psalmist wrote:
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” — Psalm 119:11
⚠️ DON'T TRY TO PROVE HOW STRONG YOU ARE
Sometimes wisdom isn't standing there fighting temptation.
Sometimes wisdom is running from it.
Joseph didn't remain in Potiphar's house arguing with temptation.
HE RAN.
Paul told Timothy:
“Flee also youthful lusts...” — 2 Timothy 2:22
There is nothing cowardly about running away from something determined to destroy you.
If you know something repeatedly causes you to stumble—
stop playing with it.
Stop negotiating with it.
Stop seeing how close you can get without falling.
RUN.
🌱 THE STRUGGLE CAN BECOME AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH
There is a sentence in today's devotional that deserves special attention:
“Temptation is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity to grow in.”
Let me complete that thought:
AN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW IN FAITH, SPIRITUAL MATURITY, DISCIPLINE, AND DEPENDENCE UPON GOD.
Every time you say no to temptation and yes to God, something is happening inside you.
You're learning dependence.
You're developing spiritual discipline.
You're discovering where your vulnerabilities are.
You're learning to recognize the enemy's tactics.
And you're learning that God's strength is greater than your weakness.
🤔 TAKE A MOMENT TODAY
Today's devotional asks us to examine ourselves:
“Are you leaning on God's faithfulness and seeking His guidance, or are you trying to handle them in your own strength?”
That's a question worth sitting with.
What temptation are you facing today?
Perhaps nobody knows.
Perhaps you've hidden it extremely well.
Maybe you've been fighting it for years.
Whatever it is—
BRING IT TO GOD.
You don't have to pretend with Him.
He already knows.
Ask Him for strength.
Ask Him for wisdom.
Ask Him to show you the escape route.
Then when He shows it to you—
TAKE IT.
🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER
Lord, thank You for Your unchanging faithfulness in the face of temptation. Help me to trust in Your strength and guidance when I face challenges. Teach me to stand firm in faith and to rely on Your power to overcome. Thank You for always providing a way out.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
❤️ A FINAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT
Perhaps you've already failed.
Maybe that's why this devotional found you today.
You knew the way out—
and didn't take it.
You knew better—
and did it anyway.
Don't allow failure to become an excuse for surrender.
Confess it.
Repent.
Receive God's forgiveness.
Get back up.
Learn where you became vulnerable.
And the next time temptation comes knocking—
remember:
GOD IS FAITHFUL.
You are not fighting alone.
His Spirit is available.
His Word is available.
His strength is available.
And somewhere in that temptation—
THERE IS A WAY OUT.
Look for it.
Take it.
And stand firm.
