WHY JESUS?
Why Is He the Only Way? Why Not Someone Else? And How Can You Know?
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” — John 14:6
For millennia, humanity has wrestled with questions that refuse to disappear:
Why Jesus?
Why is Jesus Christ supposedly the only way to God?
Why not someone else?
Why can't all religions eventually lead to the same destination?
Why do I have to choose at all?
How can Christians possibly know that Jesus is exclusive?
And perhaps the most important question:
What if I'm wrong?
Those are legitimate questions.
And if eternity is real, they deserve something better than:
"That's just what my parents taught me."
"That's what my church believes."
"That's what my pastor said."
"That's what my religion teaches."
Or even:
"That's what everybody around me believes."
Someone once expressed it wisely:
“DON'T TRUST YOUR TODAY, YOUR TOMORROW, OR ESPECIALLY YOUR ETERNITY INTO THE HANDS OF SOMEONE ELSE.”
You—and you alone—need to research, examine, question, investigate, and draw a non-biased conclusion from the evidence.
Your pastor will not stand before God for you.
Your parents cannot believe for you.
Your spouse cannot choose for you.
Your denomination cannot save you.
Your culture cannot answer for you.
Your eternity is too important to outsource.
So let's ask the question.
WHY JESUS?
FIRST, JESUS MADE THE CLAIM
One reason Christianity cannot honestly teach that Jesus is merely one option among many is that Jesus Himself didn't present His identity that way.
He said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” — John 14:6
Notice what Jesus did not say.
He didn't say:
"I know a way."
He didn't say:
"I can show you one possible way."
He didn't say:
"My teachings are one path among many."
He said:
“I AM THE WAY.”
Then:
“THE TRUTH.”
Then:
“THE LIFE.”
And finally:
“No man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”
That is undeniably exclusive.
The question, therefore, isn't whether Christianity makes an exclusive claim.
It does.
The real question is:
IS THE CLAIM TRUE?
“BUT WHY CAN'T ALL RELIGIONS BE TRUE?”
Because they make contradictory claims.
This is not an insult toward anyone's religion.
It is basic logic.
Different religions make fundamentally different claims about God, humanity, sin, salvation, Jesus, death, judgment, and eternity.
Some teach one personal God.
Others understand ultimate reality differently.
Some teach reincarnation.
Christianity teaches resurrection.
Some systems emphasize liberation or enlightenment through particular practices.
Christianity says humanity's fundamental problem is sin and reconciliation with God comes through Jesus Christ.
Some regard Jesus primarily as a prophet, teacher, or religious figure.
Christianity declares Him:
Lord.
These statements cannot all be simultaneously true in the same sense.
We can respect people without pretending contradictory ideas are identical.
Respect does not require intellectual dishonesty.
JESUS IS DIFFERENT
Many influential religious and philosophical teachers have said, in effect:
"Follow these teachings."
"Practice this discipline."
"Walk this path."
"Seek enlightenment."
"Do these things."
Jesus made a radically different claim.
He pointed ultimately to Himself.
“Come unto Me...” — Matthew 11:28
“Follow Me.” — Matthew 4:19
“I am the resurrection, and the life...” — John 11:25
“Before Abraham was, I am.” — John 8:58
And:
“He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father...” — John 14:9
Jesus cannot easily be reduced to merely:
“a good moral teacher.”
His claims demand examination.
DON'T BEGIN WITH RELIGION—BEGIN WITH JESUS
Perhaps organized religion has disappointed you.
Perhaps you've encountered hypocrisy.
Maybe a pastor failed you.
Maybe a church hurt you.
Perhaps Christians behaved in ways that seemed anything but Christlike.
Those experiences matter.
But here's something important:
DON'T JUDGE JESUS SOLELY BY PEOPLE WHO CLAIM TO REPRESENT HIM.
Investigate Jesus.
Read what He taught.
Study what He did.
Examine His claims.
Look at how He treated sinners.
Look at how He confronted hypocrisy.
Look at His compassion.
Look at His authority.
Look at the Cross.
And then investigate the event upon which Christianity ultimately rises or falls:
THE RESURRECTION.
CHRISTIANITY PUTS AN EVENT AT THE CENTER OF ITS CLAIM
Christianity doesn't merely say:
"Jesus taught wonderful things."
It makes a historical claim:
Jesus Christ was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again.
Paul understood how crucial this was.
He wrote:
“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” — 1 Corinthians 15:14
Think about the audacity of that statement.
Paul essentially places Christianity on the table for examination.
If Christ was not raised—
Christian faith collapses.
That means anyone seriously investigating Christianity should examine the Resurrection rather than dismissing it without investigation.
Ask questions.
What do the earliest Christian sources claim?
Was Jesus crucified?
Why did His followers proclaim that He had risen?
Why did frightened disciples become public witnesses?
What did the earliest Christians actually believe?
What explanations have been offered for the Resurrection accounts?
Which explanation best fits the evidence?
Don't be afraid of the questions.
Truth doesn't need to fear investigation.
WHY DOES THERE HAVE TO BE “A WAY” AT ALL?
This may be the deeper question.
Why can't God simply accept everyone?
Because the biblical problem isn't that humanity merely lacks information.
The problem is sin.
Romans 3:23 says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
All.
Pastors.
Missionaries.
Atheists.
Christians.
Muslims.
Hindus.
Buddhists.
Politicians.
Rich people.
Poor people.
Americans.
Filipinos.
Every nationality.
Every race.
Every generation.
All have sinned.
Christianity isn't fundamentally declaring:
"We're better than everybody else."
Quite the opposite.
Christianity begins by declaring:
WE ALL NEED SAVING.
THAT IS WHY THE CROSS MATTERS
If our problem were ignorance, perhaps we would merely need education.
If our problem were poverty, perhaps we would merely need money.
If our problem were bad habits, perhaps we would merely need discipline.
But if our deepest problem is sin separating humanity from a holy God, we need reconciliation.
That brings us to Jesus Christ.
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God...” — 1 Peter 3:18
There is the Gospel.
The Just for the unjust.
Jesus does for us what Christianity says we cannot accomplish for ourselves.
“WHY WOULD A LOVING GOD MAKE ONLY ONE WAY?”
Consider the question differently.
If humanity is separated from God and God provides a way of reconciliation at enormous cost to Himself, perhaps the remarkable thing isn't:
“Why only one way?”
Perhaps it is:
“WHY DID HE PROVIDE A WAY AT ALL?”
John 3:16 doesn't say God hated the world.
It says:
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son...”
The Cross isn't evidence of God's unwillingness to save.
It is Christianity's supreme evidence of His willingness.
“BUT I'M A GOOD PERSON.”
Compared with whom?
Your neighbor?
A criminal?
Someone on television?
Someone you dislike?
Human beings naturally grade ourselves on a curve.
God's standard isn't your neighbor.
It is holiness.
And none of us meets it.
That's why salvation cannot finally depend upon being “good enough.”
Ephesians 2:8–9 says:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith... Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Christianity doesn't say:
Do enough and perhaps God will accept you.
The Gospel announces:
Christ has done what you could never do for yourself.
“WHY DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE?”
Because refusing to choose is itself a choice.
If a doctor told you that you had a fatal condition and offered a cure, you could say:
"I'm not ready to decide."
But the illness would not suspend itself while you considered the matter indefinitely.
Jesus repeatedly calls people to respond.
Not because He is frightened by questions.
But because life is temporary.
James 4:14 describes life as:
“…a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
We behave as though we possess unlimited tomorrows.
We don't.
DON'T LET SOMEONE ELSE MAKE THIS DECISION FOR YOU
Maybe you grew up Christian.
Investigate Jesus.
Maybe you grew up Muslim.
Investigate Jesus.
Maybe you grew up Hindu.
Investigate Jesus.
Maybe you grew up Buddhist.
Investigate Jesus.
Maybe you grew up atheist or agnostic.
Investigate Jesus.
Maybe you've never thought seriously about religion at all.
Investigate Jesus.
And Christians—
you aren't exempt.
Don't believe merely because Grandma believed.
Don't believe simply because Pastor said so.
Don't build eternity upon inherited assumptions.
Know why you believe what you believe.
Peter instructed believers to:
“…be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you...” — 1 Peter 3:15
Christian faith should not fear sincere questions.
PUT JESUS ON TRIAL
Not disrespectfully.
Investigatively.
Open the evidence.
Read one of the Gospels for yourself.
Start with John.
Ask:
Who did Jesus claim to be?
What did His enemies say?
What did His disciples believe?
What happened at the Cross?
What evidence surrounds the Resurrection?
How early were these beliefs proclaimed?
Could Christianity's explosive beginning be adequately explained if everyone knew Jesus remained dead?
Investigate both Christian arguments and serious criticisms of them.
Don't search merely for evidence confirming what you already want to believe.
Ask:
WHAT BEST EXPLAINS THE EVIDENCE?
Because if Jesus Christ truly rose from the dead, His statement in John 14:6 deserves infinitely more than casual consideration.
SUPPOSE JESUS WAS TELLING THE TRUTH
Just suppose.
Suppose He really is who He claimed to be.
Suppose Calvary really was God's rescue mission for humanity.
Suppose the tomb really was empty.
Suppose Jesus Christ really rose.
Suppose He really is:
THE WAY.
THE TRUTH.
THE LIFE.
Then the most important question you will ever answer isn't:
"What career should I choose?"
"Where should I live?"
"Who should I marry?"
"How much money can I make?"
It is:
“WHAT WILL I DO WITH JESUS CHRIST?”
YOUR ETERNITY IS TOO IMPORTANT FOR A GUESS
Don't gamble eternity on:
"I think..."
"Someone told me..."
"Everybody says..."
"My family has always believed..."
"Religion isn't important to me..."
Research.
Examine.
Question.
Read.
Compare.
Think.
Pray—even if your prayer begins:
“God, if You are there, show me the truth.”
And follow the evidence wherever it leads.
You may discover that Christianity isn't asking you merely to accept a religious system.
It is introducing you to a Person.
JESUS CHRIST.
AND THEN YOU MUST DECIDE
Evidence can bring you to the door.
Nobody else can walk through it for you.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life...”
You can reject that statement.
You can accept it.
You can investigate it.
You can ignore it.
But you cannot honestly transform it into:
"I am one of many equally valid ways."
Jesus didn't say that.
The question is whether He had the authority to say what He actually said.
WHY JESUS?
Because Christianity claims that in Jesus Christ, God came looking for us.
Because Jesus didn't merely tell sinners to find a path back to God.
He said He was the Way.
Because He didn't merely discuss truth.
He said He was the Truth.
Because He didn't merely offer principles for a better existence.
He said He was the Life.
Because He went to the Cross for sinners.
Because Christianity declares that He rose from the grave.
And because He still issues the invitation:
“COME UNTO ME.”
A FINAL CHALLENGE
Before dismissing Jesus Christ—
investigate Him.
Before trusting Jesus Christ merely because someone else told you to—
investigate Him.
Before placing your eternity into the hands of tradition, culture, skepticism, religion, a pastor, a professor, an internet personality, or even your family—
investigate Him.
Your today's matter.
Your tomorrow's matter.
But your eternity matters infinitely more.
And once you've honestly examined the evidence—
you decide.
Jesus has already told us who He claims to be:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”
— John 14:6
Now the question belongs to you:
WHO DO YOU SAY THAT JESUS IS?

SHARE THE QUESTION
Don't merely tell someone what to believe.
Challenge them to investigate Jesus Christ for themselves.
Read the Gospel of John together.
Ask the difficult questions.
Examine the evidence.
And above all—
don't entrust your eternity to somebody else's conclusion.
