There are days when prayer comes easily.
The words flow.
Faith feels strong.
Your heart is full.
You know exactly what you want to tell God.
And then—
THERE ARE THE OTHER DAYS.
Days when you sit down to pray and nothing comes out.
Days when your heart hurts so badly that you cannot find the words.
Days when you're angry.
Confused.
Disappointed.
Afraid.
Exhausted.
Grieving.
Spiritually dry.
Days when you've prayed about the same situation so many times that you wonder what else there is to say.
And perhaps even days when a troubling question quietly enters your mind:
“Is God even listening anymore?”

This isn't a book for people who have prayer completely figured out.
It's for the rest of us.
SOMETIMES PRAYER IS HARD
Christians don't always like admitting that.
We're supposed to pray.
We know the Scriptures.
We hear sermons about prayer.
We sing about prayer.
We tell other people:
“I'm praying for you.”
But what happens when you are the one struggling to pray?
What happens when life hits so hard that your prayer vocabulary seems to disappear?
What happens when you've been asking God for an answer—
and Heaven seems silent?
What happens when you don't feel spiritual?
What happens when you're disappointed with God?
What happens when you're ashamed of something you've done?
What happens when you haven't prayed in months—or years?
Here's what I want you to know:
PRAY ANYWAY.
YOU DON'T NEED PERFECT WORDS
One of the greatest misconceptions about prayer is that we have to sound spiritual.
We think prayer must contain the right vocabulary.
The right tone.
The right theological phrases.
Perhaps even a certain amount of time.
But prayer isn't a performance.
Prayer is communication with God.
Jesus warned against thinking we would be heard because of our “much speaking” (Matthew 6:7).
God isn't impressed by religious vocabulary.
He wants you.
Your heart.
Your honesty.
Your dependence.
Sometimes one of the most sincere prayers you will ever pray consists of only a few words:
“Lord, help me.”
And God understands every syllable.
JESUS' DISCIPLES HAD TO LEARN TOO
I love Luke 11:1 because it destroys the idea that everyone should automatically know how to pray.
The disciples had walked with Jesus.
They had heard Him teach.
They had watched miracles.
They had seen things most of us can only read about.
Yet one of them still said:
“Lord, teach us to pray…”
Think about that.
They needed help.
And Jesus didn't shame them.
He taught them.
That's important.
If you struggle with prayer, don't allow embarrassment to keep you from the very One who can teach you.
“BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY”
Then tell God that.
Seriously.
“Father, I don't know what to say.”
That's a prayer.
“Lord, I'm hurting.”
That's a prayer.
“Jesus, I'm angry and I don't understand.”
That's a prayer.
“God, I'm scared.”
That's a prayer.
“Lord, I need You.”
That's a prayer.
“Father, I don't even feel like praying today—but I'm here.”
That's a prayer too.
Prayer begins with honesty, not eloquence.
WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THE WORDS
Romans 8:26 contains one of the most comforting truths in Scripture:
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought…”
Did you catch that?
The Bible acknowledges that there are times when:
WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO PRAY.
But the verse doesn't end there.
“…but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Even when your vocabulary fails—
God has not abandoned you.
Even your groaning matters.
Even your tears matter.
Even your silence before God matters.
GOD UNDERSTANDS TEARS
There are prayers that never become sentences.
They become tears.
You've probably experienced one.
You tried to say:
“Father…”
And that was as far as you got.
The tears came.
The memories came.
The pain came.
And the words disappeared.
Don't think nothing happened.
Psalm 56:8 speaks of God taking account of our tears.
The Lord knows what those tears mean.
HE SPEAKS THE LANGUAGE OF A BROKEN HEART.
WHAT ABOUT UNANSWERED PRAYER?
Now we arrive at one of the hardest parts.
You've prayed.
And prayed.
And prayed.
Nothing appears to change.
The diagnosis remains.
The marriage is still struggling.
The child is still away from God.
The financial situation hasn't improved.
The door hasn't opened.
The person hasn't returned.
The grief hasn't disappeared.
And eventually you wonder:
“Why should I keep praying?”
Because God's silence is not proof of God's absence.
And God's delay is not proof that God hasn't heard you.
Sometimes His answer is yes.
Sometimes no.
Sometimes wait.
Sometimes He answers in a way we never anticipated.
And sometimes we may not fully understand His answer on this side of eternity.
But—
PRAY ANYWAY.
JESUS PRAYED WHEN THE ANSWER HURT
Go with me to Gethsemane.
Jesus knew what was ahead.
The Cross.
The suffering.
The agony.
Yet He prayed:
“O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” — Matthew 26:39
That's prayer at its deepest level.
Not:
“God, give me everything I ask for.”
But:
“Father, I trust You even when Your will is difficult.”
Sometimes prayer changes circumstances.
Sometimes prayer changes us while we're walking through circumstances.
And sometimes it does both.
PRAY WHEN YOU FEEL GOD
Pray when worship seems to fill the room.
Pray when Scripture leaps off the page.
Pray when you're rejoicing.
Pray when you've just received the answer.
Pray when everything makes sense.
But also—
PRAY WHEN YOU DON'T FEEL ANYTHING.
Pray in the hospital.
Pray in the unemployment line.
Pray after the funeral.
Pray when the bills arrive.
Pray when the relationship collapses.
Pray when you're sitting alone at 2:00 in the morning.
Pray when you've failed.
Pray when you're confused.
Pray when you're disappointed.
Pray when you don't understand God.
Pray when you know.
Pray when you don't know.
GOD IS STILL LISTENING
That's the heartbeat of this book.
Not that prayer is always easy.
It isn't.
Not that every prayer will receive the answer we want.
It won't.
Not that Christians never struggle.
We do.
The message is much simpler:
GOD IS STILL LISTENING.
Psalm 34:17 says:
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth…”
Jeremiah 33:3 says:
“Call unto Me, and I will answer thee…”
First Peter 5:7 tells us:
“Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.”
Prayer isn't shouting into an empty universe.
There is Someone on the other end.
THIS BOOK IS FOR THE PERSON WHO FEELS STUCK
When I began developing When Prayer Seems So Difficult—Pray Anyway, I wanted it to be practical.
Portable.
Readable.
Personal.
Not a theological textbook sitting on a shelf collecting dust.
I wanted something you could place into the hands of the person sitting in the church pew—
or the person who hasn't stepped inside a church in twenty years.
The new Christian.
The seasoned believer.
The struggling believer.
The skeptic who wonders whether prayer is real.
The grieving widow or widower.
The exhausted parent.
The person fighting addiction.
The lonely senior citizen.
The teenager who feels nobody understands.
The missionary thousands of miles from home.
The person sleeping on the street.
Real people living real lives.
Because prayer isn't reserved for religious professionals.
GOD DOESN'T HAVE OFFICE HOURS
Think about this.
You don't have to make an appointment.
You don't have to wait until Monday morning.
You don't need somebody to introduce you.
You don't need a reservation.
You don't need money.
You don't need a title.
You don't need a theological degree.
There isn't a sign on Heaven's door that says:
CLOSED. COME BACK TOMORROW.
God is available.
Morning.
Noon.
Midnight.
Three o'clock in the morning.
In your car.
At work.
At home.
In a hospital.
On a battlefield.
In prison.
On an airplane.
On a street corner.
Anywhere.
24 × 7 × 365.
STOP WORRYING ABOUT HOW YOU SOUND
Somebody needs this.
You've listened to other people pray and thought:
“I could never pray like that.”
Good news:
You don't have to.
God isn't asking you to pray like your pastor.
Or your grandmother.
Or your favorite preacher.
He wants to hear you.
Your voice.
Your heart.
Your concerns.
Your gratitude.
Your fears.
Your questions.
Your confession.
Your worship.
Prayer isn't about sounding impressive.
It's about coming honestly before God.
START WHERE YOU ARE
Don't wait until you're stronger.
Don't wait until life improves.
Don't wait until you've solved your problems.
Don't wait until you've cleaned yourself up.
Don't wait until Sunday.
Don't wait until January 1.
Don't wait until you “feel spiritual.”
START NOW.
Maybe your prayer today is:
“God, if You're really there, help me.”
Start there.
Maybe it's:
“Jesus, forgive me.”
Start there.
Maybe it's:
“Father, thank You.”
Start there.
Maybe it's:
“Lord, I'm falling apart.”
Start there.
Just start.
THE ENEMY WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO STOP PRAYING
Think about it.
If prayer connects the believer in fellowship and dependence upon God, what would the enemy love to convince you to abandon?
Prayer.
He'll whisper:
“God isn't listening.”
“You've messed up too badly.”
“Nothing is changing.”
“What's the use?”
“You've already prayed about that.”
And sometimes the greatest act of spiritual resistance is simply saying:
“I'M GOING TO PRAY ANYWAY.”
YOU MAY BE ONE PRAYER AWAY
I cannot promise that the next prayer changes your circumstances.
But I can tell you something else.
You don't know what God is doing where you cannot see.
You don't know what door is preparing to open.
You don't know whose heart God is working on.
You don't know what He's arranging.
You don't know what He's preventing.
You don't know what He's developing inside you.
So don't quit because you cannot see.
Faith has never required sight.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
DON'T HANG UP
If you've ever been placed on hold during a telephone call, you understand the temptation.
Minutes pass.
Nothing happens.
Eventually you wonder:
“Is anyone coming back?”
You consider hanging up.
Someone reading this is spiritually standing there with the telephone in your hand.
You've prayed.
You've waited.
And you're ready to hang up.
DON'T.
Keep talking to God.
Keep trusting.
Keep believing.
Keep listening.
Keep seeking.
Keep praying.
Because—
GOD IS STILL LISTENING.

This book isn't promising you a life without difficulties.
It's inviting you into something better:
A life in which you don't have to face those difficulties alone.
Take God your questions.
Take Him your fear.
Take Him your disappointment.
Take Him your tears.
Take Him your praise.
Take Him your confusion.
Take Him the things you understand.
And take Him the things you don't.

Father, someone reading this is tired. Someone is hurting. Someone has prayed so long that they are beginning to wonder whether You still hear them. Remind them today that they have not been forgotten. Teach us to pray when the words come easily and to pray when they don't. Help us pray when we understand and when we are confused, when we are rejoicing and when our hearts are breaking. Holy Spirit, help our infirmities when we don't know what to pray. Strengthen the person who is ready to quit. And when prayer seems difficult, give us enough faith to whisper one more time, “Father, I'm still here.” In Jesus' name, Amen.
