WHEN GOD SPEAKS
Learning to Recognize His Voice in a World Full of Voices
“There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.” — 1 Corinthians 14:10
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21
When you think about God speaking, what comes to mind first?
If you're like many people, you probably imagine an audible voice coming from Heaven:
“JAMES…”
Something unmistakable.
Something thunderous.
Something so supernatural that there could be absolutely no question:
“THAT WAS GOD!”
Can God speak audibly?
Certainly.
God is God.
He can communicate however He chooses.
But throughout the everyday Christian walk, God's leading often doesn't arrive with thunder, lightning, or an audible announcement.
Sometimes—
it's an impression.
A conviction.
A Scripture that suddenly speaks directly to your situation.
A thought that will not leave you alone.
A burden to pray for someone.
A prompting to call somebody.
A sense that you need to go somewhere.
Or perhaps—
a strong impression that you shouldn't.
And somewhere inside, you begin sensing:
“I believe the Lord wants me to do this.”
That's where discernment becomes extremely important.
THERE ARE MANY VOICES IN THE WORLD
Paul wrote:
“There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world…” — 1 Corinthians 14:10
There are certainly plenty of voices competing for our attention today.
Culture has a voice.
Social media has a voice.
Politics has a voice.
Money has a voice.
Fear has a voice.
Pride has a voice.
Friends have voices.
Family members have voices.
Our emotions have a voice.
Our past experiences have a voice.
Our desires have a voice.
The enemy has a voice.
And sometimes our own flesh can speak so loudly that we mistakenly put God's name on something we wanted all along.
That's why every Christian needs discernment.
NOT EVERY THOUGHT IS GOD
This needs to be said plainly.
Just because something enters your mind doesn't mean God put it there.
Just because you feel strongly about something doesn't necessarily mean the Holy Spirit is leading you.
Just because someone says:
“God told me…”
doesn't automatically mean God told them anything.
And the more serious the decision, the more careful we should be.
This is precisely why Scripture tells us:
“PROVE ALL THINGS.”
Test it.
Examine it.
Compare it.
Pray over it.
Does it agree with Scripture?
Does it glorify Jesus Christ?
Does it require you to disobey something God has already plainly revealed in His Word?
Does it produce the fruit of the Spirit?
Is this faith—or simply impulse?
Is this conviction—or emotion?
Is this obedience—or personal ambition dressed in religious language?
God will never lead you contrary to His revealed Word.
GOD'S WORD REMAINS THE STANDARD
Your impressions aren't the final authority.
Your feelings aren't the final authority.
Your dreams aren't the final authority.
My sermons aren't the final authority.
Another pastor isn't the final authority.
A prophet isn't the final authority.
Social media certainly isn't the final authority.
THE WORD OF GOD IS.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
When you're trying to determine whether something is from God, Scripture must remain your measuring stick.
If an impression contradicts the Bible—
you don't need another sign.
You have your answer.
BUT HOW DO I LEARN TO RECOGNIZE GOD'S LEADING?
That is where relationship enters the picture.
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
Notice the relationship:
My sheep.
Hear My voice.
I know them.
They follow Me.
Recognizing God's leading isn't primarily about learning some mystical spiritual technique.
It grows out of walking with Him.
Knowing His Word.
Prayer.
Obedience.
Submission.
Surrender.
Time.
Relationship.
The more closely you walk with someone, the more familiar you become with them.
BEFORE IT BECOMES AS NATURAL AS BREATHING
There are some foundational lessons we must learn.
We must:
YIELD.
Stop demanding that God approve what you've already decided.
Ask:
“Lord, what do YOU want?”
Then—
SUBMIT.
God isn't your assistant.
He isn't waiting for instructions from us.
We belong to Him.
Then—
OBEY.
When God shows you something clearly, do it.
Delayed obedience has derailed many Christians.
Then—
COMMIT.
Don't obey God only when the path is easy.
Commit yourself to following Him when you understand—
and when you don't.
Then—
STEP OUT.
At some point, faith has to move its feet.
You can pray forever about stepping out of the boat.
Eventually—
you have to step.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS
Peter learned this lesson dramatically.
Jesus told him:
“Come.”
Peter stepped out of the boat.
Think about that!
He actually walked on water.
But Matthew 14:30 tells us:
“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid…”
Peter shifted his focus.
He looked at the circumstances instead of Christ.
And he began to sink.
But Peter did something else correctly.
He cried:
“Lord, save me.”
And Scripture says:
“Immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand…”
That's important for somebody reading this.
SOMETIMES YOU'RE GOING TO BLOW IT
You will.
So will I.
You will misunderstand something.
You may move too quickly.
You may move too slowly.
You may mistake emotion for direction.
You may believe God said something when, looking back, you realize:
“That was me.”
You may step out in faith and stumble.
You may make a decision you later wish you had made differently.
WELCOME TO WALKING BY FAITH.
Spiritual maturity doesn't mean you never make another mistake.
It means you're increasingly willing to let God correct you when you do.
COURSE CORRECTIONS ARE PART OF THE JOURNEY
Think about navigation.
If you're traveling a long distance and drift slightly off course, the navigator doesn't throw away the entire journey.
A correction is made.
The direction is adjusted.
And the journey continues.
God does that with us.
Sometimes He says:
“Not that way.”
Sometimes:
“Wait.”
Sometimes:
“Move.”
Sometimes:
“Stop.”
Sometimes:
“Go back and make that right.”
Sometimes:
“You heard Me correctly. Keep going.”
And sometimes:
“That wasn't Me.”
Don't become offended when God corrects you.
THANK HIM.
Correction means He's still teaching you.
FAILURE DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN YOU MISSED GOD
This is extremely important.
Some Christians believe:
“If God told me to do this, everything should work perfectly.”
Where did we get that idea?
God told Moses to confront Pharaoh.
Did Pharaoh immediately cooperate?
No.
God sent David toward a throne.
Did David immediately become king?
No.
God sent Paul to preach the Gospel.
Did everybody welcome him?
Absolutely not.
Opposition isn't necessarily evidence that you missed God.
Difficulty isn't necessarily evidence that you missed God.
A closed door isn't always evidence that you missed God.
And failure certainly isn't always evidence that you missed God.
Sometimes obedience leads straight into a valley.
DAVID UNDERSTOOD THE VALLEY
David wrote:
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…” — Psalm 23:4
Why?
Because David knew exactly where everything would turn out?
No.
Because the valley wasn't dangerous?
No.
Because David had a detailed map?
No.
He tells us why:
“FOR THOU ART WITH ME.”
That changes everything.
David's confidence wasn't ultimately in the road.
His confidence was in the Shepherd.
FAITH DOESN'T REQUIRE YOU TO SEE THE WHOLE ROAD
Sometimes God gives you enough light for the next step.
And that's all.
We want:
Step 1.
Step 2.
Step 3.
Step 4.
Step 5.
And preferably—
the final outcome.
God sometimes says:
“Take Step 1.”
And we respond:
"But what happens at Step 17?"
God says:
“Take Step 1.”
Faith doesn't mean you know everything that's coming.
Faith means you know Who is going with you.
EVENTUALLY, SOMETHING CHANGES
As you continue walking with God—
yielding,
submitting,
obeying,
committing,
being corrected,
learning Scripture,
praying,
failing,
getting back up,
and continuing forward—
something begins happening.
The relationship deepens.
Discernment grows.
You become increasingly familiar with the ways God leads you.
What once required enormous internal wrestling can eventually become much more natural.
Not because you become infallible.
You don't.
Not because every impression suddenly becomes God.
It doesn't.
But because you have spent years walking with the Shepherd.
You know His Word.
You recognize His character.
You have learned what obedience costs.
You have experienced His correction.
You have watched His faithfulness.
And dependence upon Him becomes—
AS NATURAL AS BREATHING.
DON'T CHASE VOICES—CHASE JESUS
This may be the most important sentence in this entire message.
DON'T BECOME OBSESSED WITH HEARING A VOICE.
Become obsessed with knowing Jesus Christ.
Read His Word.
Pray.
Worship.
Obey.
Serve.
Love people.
Walk humbly.
Keep your heart tender toward the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus becomes the focus, discerning His leading becomes part of relationship rather than some spiritual trophy.
AND KEEP TESTING EVERYTHING
No matter how long you've been saved.
No matter how many times you've heard God correctly.
No matter how spiritually mature you become.
Keep returning to:
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
Humility says:
“Lord, I believe this is You—but correct me if I'm wrong.”
That prayer can save you from enormous trouble.
Never become so confident in your ability to hear God that you believe you no longer need Scripture, prayer, wisdom, counsel, or correction.
That's not maturity.
That's danger.
WHAT IF I GET IT WRONG?
Then let God teach you.
Repent if repentance is necessary.
Correct what needs correcting.
Learn the lesson.
Get back up.
And keep walking.
Proverbs 24:16 says:
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again…”
Notice something.
He fell.
But—
HE GOT BACK UP.
THE GOAL ISN'T PERFECTION—IT'S FAITHFULNESS
We are following Jesus.
Learning.
Growing.
Being corrected.
Being transformed.
And becoming increasingly sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading.
There will be mountaintops.
There will be valleys.
There will be moments when God's direction seems unmistakable.
And there will be moments when you'll pray:
“Lord, I need You to help me understand.”
Through all of it—
keep your eyes on Jesus.
A PERSONAL REQUEST FROM PILGRIM OUTREACH MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL
As I write these words, I want to ask something personally of everyone who reads, follows, supports, or prays for Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.
PLEASE KEEP US IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
We want to do the will of our Heavenly Father.
Not our will.
Not our plans simply because they sound good.
Not ministry for recognition.
Not activity merely for the sake of being busy.
Our prayer is:
“Father, what would You have us do?”
And when He directs—
give us the courage to obey.
HIS WORK MUST GO FORWARD
Jesus said:
“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” — Mark 16:15
The mission hasn't changed.
The Gospel must go forward.
People still need Jesus.
Families still need hope.
Children still need help.
Communities still need the Gospel.
The broken still need compassion.
The lost still need salvation.
There are still nations to reach.
There are still doors to enter.
There are still people who have never heard.
And by the grace of God—
WE INTEND TO KEEP GOING.
To the Philippines.
Across Asia.
Wherever God opens the door.
As long as He gives us strength.
As long as He provides.
As long as He says:
“GO.”
PLEASE PRAY FOR US
Pray that we hear correctly.
Pray that we discern wisely.
Pray that we never confuse our desires with God's direction.
Pray that we remain humble enough to receive correction.
Pray that when God says wait, we wait.
When He says stop, we stop.
When He says move, we move.
When He says give, we give.
When He says speak, we speak.
And when He says—
“GO”—
pray that nothing keeps us standing still.
🙏 OUR PRAYER
Heavenly Father, there are many voices in this world competing for our attention. Teach us to recognize Your leading without becoming careless or presumptuous. Keep us anchored in Your Word. Help us test everything and hold fast to what is good. Teach us to yield, submit, obey, commit, and step out in faith with our eyes fixed upon Jesus Christ. When we misunderstand, correct us. When we fall, lift us. When we become afraid, remind us that You are with us. When the road leads through the valley, help us keep walking. And when You call us to go, give us faith to move. Lord, guide Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International. Open the doors You want opened and close those You want closed. Provide every resource necessary to accomplish Your will. Protect those who labor with us and those whom You send us to serve. May the Gospel of Jesus Christ continue going forward—to the Philippines, throughout Asia, and unto the ends of the earth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
THERE ARE MANY VOICES.
KNOW THE WORD.
TEST EVERYTHING.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS.
AND WHEN GOD SAYS “GO”—GO.
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Failure doesn't mean God has abandoned you.
A course correction doesn't mean the journey is over.
And walking through a valley doesn't mean you're walking alone.
THE SHEPHERD IS STILL WITH YOU.
Keep walking.
Keep listening.
Keep testing.
Keep trusting.
Keep obeying.
And keep going.
