WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?
You Were Born for More Than Simply Existing
At some point—perhaps late at night when everything is quiet—almost everyone encounters the question:
What is the meaning of life?
Why am I here?
What is my purpose?
Does my life really matter?
Is there something beyond getting up, going to work, paying bills, raising a family, growing older, and eventually dying?
These are not foolish questions.
They are some of the most important questions a human being can ask.
You can have money and still ask them.
You can have a beautiful home and still ask them.
You can have a successful career, a loving family, recognition, education, possessions, and accomplishments—and somewhere deep inside still wonder:
“Is this all there is?”
The Bible's answer is a resounding:
NO.
There is more.
Much more.
YOU ARE NOT AN ACCIDENT
The first thing you need to understand about the meaning of life is that your life has meaning because God gave you life.
Genesis 1:27 tells us:
“So God created man in his own image…”
Think about that.
You were created by God.
You bear the image of God.
Your value is not determined by your bank account, education, occupation, popularity, appearance, age, nationality, successes, or failures.
Your life has value because your Creator gave it value.
Psalm 139:14 declares:
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”
You are not merely taking up space on this planet.
God knew you would be here.
And if you are still breathing, your story is not finished.
THEN WHY DOES LIFE SOMETIMES FEEL SO EMPTY?
That is where many people become confused.
If God created us, why can life hurt so badly?
Why do we experience loneliness?
Why do marriages struggle?
Why do people betray us?
Why do our bodies become sick?
Why do people we love die?
Why can someone seemingly have everything and still feel as though something is missing?
Because humanity's deepest problem cannot be solved with more things.
We keep trying.
More money.
More entertainment.
More relationships.
More possessions.
More success.
More followers.
More recognition.
More pleasure.
And yet that nagging emptiness eventually returns.
Why?
Because there is a place inside the human heart that was designed for fellowship with God.
Nothing else can permanently fill it.
Jesus asked one of the most penetrating questions ever recorded:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
— Mark 8:36
Imagine gaining everything this world could possibly give you—and discovering that you missed the most important thing of all.
LIFE IS NOT PRIMARILY ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE
Jesus warned us:
“...a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
— Luke 12:15
Read that again.
Your life is bigger than your possessions.
Some people spend decades accumulating things only to discover that things cannot hug them.
Things cannot forgive them.
Things cannot give them peace at 2:00 in the morning.
Things cannot answer their prayers.
Things cannot save their souls.
And eventually, every possession we spent our lives collecting will belong to somebody else.
We brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing out.
So there must be something greater.
There is.
THE MEANING OF LIFE BEGINS WITH GOD
Ecclesiastes records the reflections of a man who had wealth, influence, possessions, accomplishments, pleasure, and opportunities beyond what most people could imagine.
After examining it all, Solomon reached this conclusion:
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments…”
— Ecclesiastes 12:13
After all the searching…
After all the possessions…
After all the accomplishments…
After all the experiments with pleasure…
He came back to God.
And sooner or later, every human search for ultimate meaning brings us to the same intersection.
What will I do with God?
JESUS CHRIST IS THE CENTER
Christianity does not merely tell us to become nicer people.
The Gospel announces that humanity has been separated from God by sin—and that God Himself provided the way back.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
— John 14:6
That changes everything.
The meaning of life is not simply:
Find yourself.
It is:
Know your Creator.
It is not merely:
Follow your heart.
It is:
Follow Jesus Christ.
It is not merely:
Build something impressive.
It is:
Build something that matters for eternity.
YOU WERE CREATED TO KNOW GOD
Jesus prayed:
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
— John 17:3
There it is.
Life reaches its deepest meaning when the creature is reconciled to the Creator.
We were created to know God.
To love Him.
To worship Him.
To walk with Him.
To serve Him.
To love others.
To become more like Christ.
And to use the life He has entrusted to us for purposes greater than ourselves.
YOUR PURPOSE DOES NOT END WITH YOU
Once you understand who you belong to, another question appears:
“Lord, what would You have me do?”
Maybe God has called you to preach.
Maybe to teach.
Maybe to raise children who know Him.
Maybe to encourage somebody who has nearly given up.
Maybe to feed somebody.
Maybe to visit somebody lonely.
Maybe to help a struggling family.
Maybe to disciple a new believer.
Maybe to pray.
Maybe to give.
Maybe to forgive someone.
Maybe simply to tell somebody:
“Jesus loves you, and you are not forgotten.”
Never assume that something must be spectacular to be significant.
Sometimes the most important thing you will ever do for God will never receive applause from people.
Jesus said:
“...Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
— Matthew 25:40
One person matters.
One prayer matters.
One act of kindness matters.
One soul matters.
YOUR PAIN CAN HAVE PURPOSE TOO
Somebody reading this may be thinking:
“Pastor, you don't know what I've been through.”
You're right.
I may not.
But God does.
The scars you carry do not automatically disqualify you from having purpose.
Sometimes the very places where we were wounded become the places from which we can minister most compassionately to someone else.
The person who has cried knows how to sit beside somebody who is crying.
The person who has struggled knows how to recognize struggle.
The person God has lifted can reach down and tell somebody else:
“Hold on. I've been there. God is still faithful.”
Romans 8:28 reminds believers:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…”
It does not say everything that happens is good.
It tells us that God is able to work through what happens.
God can redeem what the enemy intended to destroy.
LIFE IS SHORTER THAN WE THINK
James 4:14 asks:
“For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
We behave as though we have unlimited tomorrows.
We don't.
Every sunrise is another gift.
Every heartbeat is another gift.
Every opportunity to love somebody is another gift.
Every opportunity to forgive is another gift.
Every opportunity to pray is another gift.
Every opportunity to tell somebody about Jesus is another gift.
So don't waste your life merely existing.
Live it.
Love your family.
Forgive quickly.
Pray often.
Help somebody.
Read your Bible.
Tell people you love them.
Give when God enables you.
Serve while you can.
Share Christ.
And when you fall, get back up.
SO, WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?
Perhaps we can bring everything down to this:
To know God through Jesus Christ, to love Him, to walk with Him, to love and serve others, to fulfill the purpose He has entrusted to us, and to prepare for eternity with Him.
Everything else is temporary.
Your house is temporary.
Your automobile is temporary.
Your job is temporary.
Your title is temporary.
Your bank account is temporary.
Your body itself is temporary.
But your soul is eternal.
And that changes the value of everything.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE THIS PAGE...
I want to ask you something personal.
Do you know Jesus Christ?
Not merely know about Him.
Do you know Him?
Maybe you've spent years searching for meaning in places that could never provide it.
Perhaps today is the day you stop running.
Romans 10:9 tells us:
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
You can come to Him today.
You don't have to clean yourself up first.
Come as you are.
Repent.
Believe.
Surrender your life to Jesus Christ.
And then begin discovering what life was always meant to be.
YOU HAVE A PURPOSE.
YOUR LIFE MATTERS.
ETERNITY MATTERS.
And perhaps the question is no longer simply:
“What is the meaning of life?”
Perhaps the question now becomes:
“LORD, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH THE LIFE YOU HAVE GIVEN ME?”
Don't be afraid to ask Him.
Then be willing to follow where He leads.
