WHAT HAPPENED TO US?
When Intimacy Disappears From Marriage—and Nobody Wants to Talk About It
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” — Hebrews 13:4 KJV
There are some subjects we talk about freely in church.
Prayer.
Faith.
Salvation.
Giving.
Forgiveness.
Bible study.
Marriage even gets its share of sermons.
But mention what happens inside the bedroom of a married couple, and suddenly everybody gets quiet.
Some consider the subject inappropriate.
Others call it private.
Still others believe pastors simply shouldn't talk about it.
But the Bible does.
And if God was not embarrassed to address marital intimacy, perhaps the Church should not be embarrassed to discuss it either—with wisdom, dignity, discretion, and biblical boundaries.
Because behind many closed doors are husbands and wives who love God, love each other, and yet are quietly asking:
“WHAT HAPPENED TO US?”
💍 MARRIAGE IS MORE THAN LIVING UNDER THE SAME ROOF
Hebrews 13:4 begins with an extraordinary declaration:
“Marriage is honourable in all...”
Marriage is God's idea.
Long before governments issued marriage licenses, churches performed ceremonies, or cultures developed wedding traditions, God declared:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” — Genesis 2:24 KJV
Notice those words:
ONE FLESH.
Marriage was never intended to be two strangers sharing expenses, raising children, paying bills, and sleeping under the same roof.
It is covenant.
It is companionship.
It is friendship.
It is emotional closeness.
It is spiritual partnership.
And yes—
it includes physical intimacy.
That is not dirty.
That is not shameful.
Within God's design for marriage, it is something to be honored.
⚠️ WE TALK ABOUT WHY MARRIAGES FAIL—BUT DO WE GO DEEP ENOUGH?
When marriages begin falling apart, we often hear familiar explanations:
Poor communication.
Unresolved conflict.
Financial pressure.
Loss of respect.
Emotional exhaustion.
Infidelity.
Different goals.
Growing apart.
Lack of intimacy.
One spouse simply stops trying.
And all of these can contribute to serious marital distress.
But after spending countless hours talking with married couples over the years, I have repeatedly noticed something.
Intimacy is often one of the least honestly discussed areas between husbands and wives.
Not merely whether intimacy happens.
But:
How do you feel?
Do you feel loved?
Do you feel safe?
Do you feel wanted?
Do you feel respected?
Do you feel emotionally connected to me?
Is there something hurting you that we have never discussed?
Those conversations can be difficult.
But silence doesn't heal a marriage.
❤️ INTIMACY IS BIGGER THAN SEX
This distinction is extremely important.
Sex and intimacy are related, but they are not identical.
A couple can have sex and still be emotionally miles apart.
True marital intimacy includes the little things that happen long before anybody enters the bedroom.
Holding hands.
Listening.
Laughing together.
A gentle touch while walking past one another.
Saying, “How was your day?”—and actually listening to the answer.
Sitting together without a television, telephone, tablet, or computer demanding your attention.
Praying together.
Forgiving each other.
Talking.
Sharing fears.
Sharing dreams.
Being vulnerable.
Feeling safe.
Feeling valued.
Feeling wanted.
Feeling heard.
The bedroom often reveals what has been happening everywhere else in the marriage.
💔 WHEN “US” BECOMES “ME”
Here is where trouble can begin.
One spouse has had a terrible day.
Pressure.
Frustration.
Anger.
Stress.
Disappointment.
Exhaustion.
They come home emotionally overloaded and begin viewing sex primarily as a means of release.
The other spouse's emotional condition becomes secondary.
“I need this.”
But marriage was never designed around me, myself, and I.
Biblical intimacy is mutual.
Paul's teaching in 1 Corinthians 7:3–5 emphasizes mutual marital responsibility. Neither husband nor wife is presented as an object existing merely for the satisfaction of the other.
Love asks:
“How are you?”
“What do you need?”
“Are you okay?”
“How can I love you better?”
That changes the conversation.
🚫 INTIMACY IS NEVER AN EXCUSE FOR SELFISHNESS OR COERCION
This needs to be stated clearly.
No biblical passage gives a husband or wife permission to force, manipulate, intimidate, shame, pressure, or coerce a spouse into sexual activity.
Marriage does not eliminate the need for love, respect, tenderness, safety, and mutual consideration.
Paul wrote:
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” — Ephesians 5:25 KJV
Look at the model.
Christlike love is not:
“What can I get?”
It asks:
“WHAT CAN I GIVE?”
If your spouse is frightened, hurting, sick, exhausted, emotionally wounded, or carrying unresolved trauma, love does not bulldoze through those realities.
Love listens.
Love cares.
Love waits.
Love seeks understanding.
Love protects.
🗣️ TALK ABOUT IT
This may sound ridiculously simple, but many couples simply don't talk honestly about intimacy.
They may have been married five years.
Twenty years.
Forty years.
Yet they have never seriously asked each other:
“Are you happy with this part of our marriage?”
Why?
Embarrassment.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of criticism.
Past experiences.
Religious shame.
Body-image concerns.
Health problems.
Unresolved resentment.
Different expectations.
Or simply never having learned how to discuss the subject.
But problems hidden in darkness rarely improve because everyone agrees not to mention them.
Talk.
Not during an argument.
Not as an accusation.
Not immediately after disappointment.
Find a peaceful time.
Put away the phones.
Sit together.
And talk.
💬 DON'T BEGIN WITH “YOU NEVER...”
Communication changes dramatically depending upon how the conversation begins.
Compare:
“You never want me anymore.”
with:
“I've been feeling distant from you lately, and I miss being close to you.”
Compare:
“You don't care about my needs.”
with:
“Can we talk about how we can better understand each other's needs?”
One attacks.
The other invites.
Remember:
THE PROBLEM IS NOT ALWAYS MINE OR YOURS. SOMETIMES IT IS OURS.
And once it becomes our problem, we can begin searching for our solution.
🙏 INVITE GOD BACK INTO YOUR MARRIAGE
Some couples pray about their children.
They pray about money.
They pray about work.
They pray about sickness.
They pray about church.
They pray about almost everything—
except their marriage.
Why?
God already knows what happens behind your bedroom door.
Nothing about your marriage surprises Him.
So pray together.
“Lord, help me understand my spouse.”
“Lord, heal what has been wounded.”
“Lord, remove resentment.”
“Lord, help us forgive.”
“Lord, restore tenderness.”
“Lord, teach me how to love.”
“Lord, help us communicate.”
“Lord, restore what we have lost.”
You might be surprised what begins changing when two people stop trying to prove who is right and kneel before the One who already knows what is wrong.
🔧 MAYBE YOUR MARRIAGE NEEDS A TUNE-UP
Cars require maintenance.
Homes require maintenance.
Bodies require care.
Why do we imagine marriage can operate for decades without intentional attention?
A marital “tune-up” may mean returning to some very simple things.
Date each other again.
Hold hands.
Talk without electronics.
Take a walk.
Laugh.
Leave an encouraging note.
Kiss goodbye.
Kiss hello.
Compliment each other.
Say, “I love you.”
Say, “I'm sorry.”
Say, “I forgive you.”
Say, “Tell me what's bothering you.”
Pray together.
And rediscover affection that doesn't always have to lead somewhere.
Sometimes your spouse needs to know that a hug is simply a hug.
Tenderness matters.
❤️ DON'T LET THE BEDROOM BECOME A BATTLEFIELD
Sex should never become a weapon.
Don't use it to punish.
Don't use it to manipulate.
Don't use affection as currency.
Don't use Scripture as leverage against your spouse.
Don't compare your husband or wife with somebody else.
Don't bring pornography into the marriage and expect fantasy to produce genuine intimacy.
Don't allow another person to occupy emotionally or physically what belongs within your covenant.
Hebrews 13:4 continues:
“...and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
God honors the marriage covenant.
We should too.
🩹 SOMETIMES THE PROBLEM IS DEEPER THAN COMMUNICATION
Not every intimacy problem can be solved with a date night and a conversation.
There may be:
Past sexual trauma.
Betrayal.
Infidelity.
Pornography.
Depression or severe emotional distress.
Hormonal changes.
Chronic illness.
Pain during intercourse.
Medication side effects.
Sexual dysfunction.
Pregnancy or postpartum changes.
Menopause.
A history of abuse.
Deep resentment.
Or years of unresolved conflict.
Those situations should not be reduced to:
“Just try harder.”
There are times when couples need qualified help.
A trusted pastor can provide spiritual guidance.
A licensed marriage counselor can help couples work through relationship patterns.
A physician can investigate physical or medical problems.
Seeking appropriate help is not an admission that your marriage is hopeless.
Sometimes it is evidence that you believe your marriage is valuable enough to fight for.
💍 REMEMBER WHY YOU CHOSE EACH OTHER
Before the mortgage...
Before the children...
Before the bills...
Before the careers...
Before the arguments...
Before the disappointments...
Before the years began passing...
There were two people who looked at each other and said:
“I choose you.”
Maybe you need to remember those two people.
Not because everything can return to exactly the way it was.
You've both changed.
Life has happened.
But perhaps God isn't trying to take you backward.
Perhaps He wants to build something deeper than what you had before.
A mature love.
A forgiving love.
A patient love.
A sacrificial love.
A covenant love.
A love that has survived some things.
❤️ ONCE THE JOY OF “US” DISAPPEARS...
Once a husband and wife stop finding joy in one another, what happens in the bedroom becomes only part of a much larger problem.
That is why merely telling couples to “have more sex” misses the point.
The deeper question is:
WHAT HAPPENED TO US?
Where did we stop talking?
Where did resentment begin?
When did affection disappear?
When did we stop laughing?
When did your needs become an inconvenience to me?
When did my needs become invisible to you?
When did we stop praying together?
When did we stop being friends?
And perhaps the hardest question:
What have I contributed to the distance between us?
Not:
“What is wrong with you?”
But:
“LORD, SHOW ME ME.”
That prayer can change a marriage.
🙏 GOD KNOWS HOW TO REPAIR WHAT WE CANNOT
There comes a moment when a struggling couple realizes:
We cannot fix everything ourselves.
That isn't necessarily the end.
It may finally be the beginning.
Because God knows the inside of your marriage and the outside.
He knows what you say.
He knows what you don't say.
He knows the wounds.
He knows the disappointments.
He knows the unmet expectations.
He knows what happened years ago that nobody discusses anymore.
And He knows exactly what needs healing.
Restoration may not happen overnight.
Trust may need rebuilding.
Communication may need relearning.
Forgiveness may take time.
Habits may need changing.
Professional help may sometimes be necessary.
But don't underestimate what God can do when two people sincerely place their marriage before Him and say:
“LORD, HELP US.”
❤️ YOUR MARRIAGE IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR
If you're struggling today, don't automatically assume the story is over.
Start talking.
Start listening.
Start praying.
Seek appropriate help.
Rediscover tenderness.
Practice forgiveness.
Stop keeping score.
Protect your covenant.
And remember that intimacy isn't simply about what happens between the sheets.
It is about what happens between two hearts.
Hebrews 13:4 reminds us:
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled...”
There is nothing shameful about a husband and wife loving each other within the covenant God established.
The shame is that so many marriages are quietly dying because two people are too embarrassed, angry, wounded, or afraid to talk about what is happening.
Maybe tonight isn't the night to argue.
Maybe tonight is the night to sit beside the person you married, take their hand, and simply ask:
“HOW ARE WE?”
And then—
listen.
Really listen.
Because perhaps your marriage doesn't need another argument about whose fault everything is.
Perhaps it needs two people willing to say:
“THIS ISN'T YOUR PROBLEM OR MY PROBLEM. THIS IS OUR MARRIAGE—AND WITH GOD'S HELP, WE'RE GOING TO WORK ON IT TOGETHER.”
A Prayer for Marriage
Father, thank You for the covenant of marriage. Help husbands and wives rediscover love, friendship, tenderness, respect, trust, communication, and intimacy. Heal wounds that have never been discussed. Break down walls built by anger, disappointment, selfishness, betrayal, and silence. Teach us to listen before speaking and to give rather than constantly demanding. Restore marriages that appear beyond repair, and give couples wisdom to seek appropriate help when they need it. Above all, place Jesus Christ at the center of our homes and teach us to love one another according to Your Word. In Jesus' name, Amen.
