📖 WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?
Revisiting What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do (2nd Edition) by James Langston
Have you ever reached a place in life where somebody asked:
“What are you going to do?”
And your most truthful answer was:
“I DON'T KNOW.”
You prayed.
You thought about it.
You asked for advice.
You looked at every option.
You lost sleep.
You tried to make sense of things that simply didn't make sense.
And eventually you found yourself saying:
“Lord, I honestly don't know what to do.”
If you've ever been there—or you're there right now—one of my earlier books was written especially for seasons like these:
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO (2ND EDITION)
By James Langston
🌫️ LIFE DOESN'T ALWAYS COME WITH A ROADMAP
Some seasons are easy to navigate.
Others aren't.
Grief arrives.
A relationship changes.
A dream falls apart.
A prayer seems unanswered.
A promise seems delayed.
You're standing at a crossroads, and neither direction looks particularly clear.
Sometimes you know where you want to go—
but have absolutely no idea how to get there.
And sometimes you're not even sure where you're supposed to go.
That's when the question becomes very real:
“WHAT DO I DO NOW?”
🙏 WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN GOD SEEMS SILENT?
Perhaps you've prayed:
“Lord, show me what to do.”
And then—
nothing.
No dramatic revelation.
No obvious open door.
No voice from Heaven.
No instant solution.
Just another morning.
Another prayer.
Another day of waiting.
This is one of the difficult places explored in What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do (2nd Edition).
Because sometimes the greatest test of faith isn't following God when the road is obvious.
IT'S TRUSTING GOD WHEN YOU CAN'T SEE THE ROAD.
❤️ THIS BOOK IS FOR THE WEARY AND THE WAITING
I wrote this book for people navigating life's painful pauses, unexpected detours, and prolonged waiting rooms.
It's for the person dealing with:
Unanswered prayer.
Broken dreams.
Major decisions.
Spiritual exhaustion.
Grief.
Uncertainty.
Delayed promises.
Confusion.
Unexpected change.
And those strange in-between seasons when you know one chapter has ended, but the next one hasn't begun.
You're no longer where you were.
But you're not yet where you're going.
WELCOME TO THE WAITING ROOM.
👣 YOU DON'T NEED THE ENTIRE MAP
Sometimes we want God to show us everything.
“Lord, tell me what's going to happen.”
“Show me where this road ends.”
“Tell me how this works out.”
But sometimes God doesn't give us the entire map.
He gives us enough light for the next step.
Think about driving at night.
Your headlights don't illuminate the next 500 miles.
They illuminate enough road to continue moving.
You drive into that light—
and more road becomes visible.
Faith can work the same way.
YOU DON'T NEED TO SEE THE WHOLE ROAD TO TAKE THE NEXT FAITHFUL STEP.
👶 DON'T UNDERESTIMATE BABY STEPS
We like breakthroughs.
We like miracles.
We like dramatic answers.
But sometimes obedience looks remarkably ordinary.
Make the call.
Ask for help.
Apologize.
Forgive.
Rest.
Pray again.
Open your Bible.
Seek wise counsel.
Stop forcing the door.
Take the opportunity already in front of you.
Wait another day if necessary.
Sometimes we're asking God for Step 27 while ignoring Step 1.
A small step in the right direction is still progress.
🪨 HAVE YOU HIT ROCK BOTTOM?
One of the subjects explored in the book is:
“HITTING ROCK BOTTOM—NOW WHAT?”
Maybe your answer is:
“Pastor, I'm already there.”
Then start there.
Rock bottom isn't comfortable.
But sometimes reaching the bottom finally brings us to the point where we stop pretending we're still in control.
We pray:
“God, I can't fix this.”
“I don't understand this.”
“I'm tired.”
“I need You.”
Sometimes surrender begins when we finally admit:
“I CAN'T DO THIS BY MYSELF.”
🛑 SURRENDER IS NOT QUITTING
There is a difference between surrendering something to God and giving up.
Surrender says:
“Lord, I'll do what You give me to do, but I'm going to stop pretending I can control everything else.”
That's not weakness.
That's wisdom.
There are things you can change.
Change them.
There are responsibilities you need to handle.
Handle them.
There are decisions you need to make.
Make them prayerfully and wisely.
But there are also things completely outside your control.
Give those to God.
DO WHAT YOU CAN—AND TRUST GOD WITH WHAT YOU CANNOT.
😰 YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE IN PANIC
Uncertainty can make the mind race.
What if this happens?
What if that doesn't happen?
What if I make the wrong decision?
What if things get worse?
Before long, you've mentally survived twenty disasters that haven't even happened.
Fear loves uncertainty.
But faith reminds us:
YOU DON'T HAVE TO CARRY TOMORROW TODAY.
Pray.
Think.
Prepare.
Seek wisdom.
Do what is in front of you.
And leave tomorrow with God.
📚 WHAT WILL YOU FIND IN THE SECOND EDITION?
What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do (2nd Edition) expands and deepens the original message with additional stories, reflective questions, biblical examples, real-life insights, and practical takeaways.
Across twelve transformational chapters, the book helps readers learn to:
🔹 Reframe confusion as a catalyst for spiritual clarity.
🔹 Recognize purpose during seasons when God seems silent.
🔹 Walk with God when emotions and logic don't align.
🔹 Trust His character when answers seem delayed.
🔹 Take small steps of obedience when the larger road isn't visible.
🔹 Move from striving toward surrender.
🔹 Move from panic toward peace.
🔹 Find strength to continue when quitting seems easier.
This isn't simply a book for new Christians.
And it isn't only for seasoned Believers.
It's for anyone who has ever whispered:
“GOD, WHAT DO I DO NOW?”
✝️ THERE IS NO MAGIC FORMULA
This book won't give you a five-step formula guaranteed to solve every problem.
Christianity doesn't work that way.
Sometimes God changes our circumstances.
Sometimes He redirects us.
Sometimes He opens the door.
Sometimes He closes it.
Sometimes He tells us to move.
Sometimes He tells us to wait.
And sometimes while we're asking God to change everything around us—
HE BEGINS CHANGING SOMETHING INSIDE US.
This book isn't about formulas.
It's about faithfulness.
⏳ DON'T WASTE THE IN-BETWEEN
Maybe you're living there right now.
Between what was and what will be.
Something ended.
Something else hasn't started.
You prayed.
The answer hasn't arrived.
You knocked.
The door hasn't opened.
You believed.
The promise still seems distant.
Don't automatically assume nothing is happening.
God can teach us things in life's waiting rooms that we might never learn after the door opens.
Patience.
Dependence.
Discernment.
Humility.
Perseverance.
Prayer.
Trust.
And perhaps this:
GOD IS STILL GOD WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING.
🔥 YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO QUIT
Not knowing what to do doesn't mean your story is over.
Confusion isn't necessarily the end.
Delay isn't necessarily denial.
A closed door isn't necessarily rejection.
A detour isn't necessarily failure.
And not knowing what to do today doesn't mean you'll never know.
Sometimes your assignment is simply:
STAY FAITHFUL UNTIL THE NEXT STEP BECOMES CLEAR.
Keep praying.
Keep learning.
Keep serving.
Keep listening.
Keep trusting.
Move when God gives you something to do.
Wait when He tells you to wait.
But don't quit.
💡 THE CENTRAL TRUTH
If you remember only one sentence from What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do (2nd Edition), let it be this:
YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO—WHEN YOU KNOW THE ONE WHO DOES.
You may not know what's around the corner.
God does.
You may not understand why a door closed.
God sees what you cannot.
You may not know how your story ends.
God isn't limited to the page you're currently reading.
You may feel directionless.
But you are not beyond God's reach.
📖 MAYBE THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU RIGHT NOW
Perhaps you're facing:
A major life transition.
Spiritual burnout.
An unanswered prayer.
A difficult decision.
A broken dream.
A prolonged waiting season.
Or perhaps you've simply reached the end of yourself.
Then stop demanding that you have every answer before you're willing to take another step.
Walk slowly.
Pray honestly.
Listen carefully.
Seek wisdom.
Trust deeply.
And take the next faithful step.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO (2ND EDITION)
By James Langston
This book is an invitation to find clarity, courage, and Christ-centered confidence when life's direction isn't clear.
You may not have all the answers right now.
But you are:
NOT FORGOTTEN.
NOT DIRECTIONLESS.
NOT BEYOND GOD'S REACH.
And remember:
YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO—WHEN YOU KNOW THE ONE WHO DOES.
🙏 LET US PRAY
Heavenly Father,
Someone reading this doesn't know what to do.
They've prayed.
They've waited.
They've worried.
They've considered every possibility they can imagine.
And still they don't know which direction to take.
Meet them where they are.
Give them wisdom where there is confusion.
Peace where there is anxiety.
Courage where there is fear.
Patience where there is waiting.
And strength where there is exhaustion.
Close the doors they should not enter.
Open the doors according to Your will.
Surround them with wise people who can offer godly counsel.
And when they cannot understand what You're doing, help them trust who You are.
Remind them that they don't have to see the entire road tonight.
Give them enough light for the next step.
Then another.
Then another.
Until one day they can look backward and realize:
YOU WERE LEADING THEM ALL ALONG.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
HELP US HELP THEM—ONE SOUL AT A TIME.
