📚 THREE BOOKS. FOUR VOLUMES. THREE VERY DIFFERENT BATTLES.

Why Every Person Should Read at Least One of These Books

There are books we read for entertainment.

There are books we read because someone recommended them.

There are books we purchase, place on a shelf, and promise ourselves we'll eventually get around to reading.

And then there are books whose subjects intersect with the realities of our lives so directly that we ought to stop and pay attention.

Today, I want to introduce—or perhaps reintroduce—you to three major works by James Langston:

When Prayer Seems So Difficult—Pray Anyway.

Human Trafficking EXPOSED.

And the two-volume work:

And the People Cried, “Give Us A King!”

At first glance, these books could hardly appear more different.

One deals with prayer.

Another confronts human trafficking.

The third examines leadership, power, government, human choices, and the consequences that follow when people demand the wrong kind of king.

But beneath those different subjects runs a common thread:

THESE BOOKS DEAL WITH WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HUMAN BEINGS FIND THEMSELVES IN DIFFICULT PLACES.

What do we do when prayer becomes difficult?

What do we do when human beings are exploited, trafficked, bought, sold, manipulated, and treated as commodities?

What happens when people become dissatisfied with God's direction and begin placing their confidence in human power?

Prayer.

Human dignity.

Leadership.

Power.

Faith.

Freedom.

Responsibility.

Choices.

Consequences.

THESE AREN'T SMALL SUBJECTS.

And that is why I believe every person should prayerfully consider reading at least one of these books.

🙏 BOOK ONE: WHEN PRAYER SEEMS SO DIFFICULT—PRAY ANYWAY

When Prayer Seems So Difficult—Pray Anyway on Amazon

There are moments when prayer seems almost effortless.

You know exactly what you want to say.

Faith is strong.

Your heart is full.

The words come.

But what about the other days?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY TO GOD?

What happens when you've prayed about the same problem repeatedly and nothing appears to have changed?

What happens when you're disappointed?

Angry?

Confused?

Spiritually exhausted?

Grieving?

Afraid?

What happens when heaven seems silent?

Do you stop praying?

Do you conclude that God isn't listening?

Do you assume that because you don't feel anything, nothing is happening?

Or—

DO YOU PRAY ANYWAY?

That is the heart behind When Prayer Seems So Difficult—Pray Anyway.

This book wasn't written for people who have prayer completely figured out.

It was written for the rest of us.

For the person who has sat on the edge of the bed and could barely whisper:

“Lord, help me.”

For the believer who has prayed for years about a child.

A marriage.

A sickness.

A financial problem.

A ministry.

A dream.

A loved one's salvation.

And still waits.

For the person who wonders whether their prayers are reaching beyond the ceiling.

Jesus' disciples once came to Him with a simple request:

“Lord, teach us to pray...” — Luke 11:1

They had walked with Jesus.

They had watched Him pray.

And they still understood that prayer was something they needed to learn.

Perhaps we do too.

🙏 SOMETIMES THE MOST POWERFUL PRAYER IS THE ONE YOU ALMOST DIDN'T PRAY

There is something I've learned about prayer:

The enemy doesn't necessarily have to convince you that God doesn't exist.

If he can convince you that praying doesn't matter, he has already accomplished something dangerous.

Because prayer keeps us connected to God when everything around us says:

Give up.

Prayer says:

GO BACK TO THE FATHER.

When you're hurting—

pray anyway.

When you're disappointed—

pray anyway.

When you don't understand—

pray anyway.

When you've prayed yesterday, last week, last month, and last year—

PRAY ANYWAY.

This book is for anyone who has ever struggled to pray.

Which probably means—

THIS BOOK IS FOR ALMOST EVERYONE.

⛓️ BOOK TWO: HUMAN TRAFFICKING EXPOSED

Human Trafficking EXPOSED on Amazon

Then we move from a deeply personal spiritual battle to one of humanity's darkest realities.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING.

Those words are easy to read.

The reality behind them is not.

Human trafficking exists because somewhere along the way one human being decides another human being can be exploited for profit, pleasure, labor, control, or power.

People become commodities.

Freedom becomes merchandise.

Human dignity gets assigned a price.

And the darkness doesn't always look the way people imagine it does.

Modern trafficking can intersect with deceptive job recruitment, forced labor, sexual exploitation, coercion, debt, migration, online manipulation, and organized criminal enterprises. One particularly disturbing contemporary manifestation involves cyber-scam compounds in Southeast Asia, where victims can themselves be trafficked and forced into fraudulent operations.

That alone should make us pay attention.

🚨 “THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN TO SOMEONE I KNOW.”

Be careful.

Trafficking doesn't require a victim to be foolish.

It requires a trafficker to find a vulnerability.

Sometimes that vulnerability is poverty.

Sometimes desperation.

Sometimes love.

Sometimes loneliness.

Sometimes the promise of employment.

Sometimes the desire for a better life.

Sometimes trust.

And sometimes the victim doesn't recognize the trap until the door has already closed.

THAT'S WHY AWARENESS MATTERS.

Human Trafficking EXPOSED asks us to look at something many would rather avoid.

But darkness benefits when good people refuse to look at it.

Ephesians 5:11 tells us:

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

We cannot expose what we refuse to acknowledge.

We cannot protect people from dangers we don't understand.

And we cannot meaningfully pray about something we insist upon keeping outside our awareness.

❤️ THIS ISN'T JUST A CRIME ISSUE—IT'S A HUMAN ISSUE

Christians should care about human trafficking because Christians should care about people.

Period.

Every trafficked person bears human dignity.

Every exploited child matters.

Every manipulated worker matters.

Every woman matters.

Every man matters.

Every person trapped behind a locked door matters.

Every person trapped behind an invisible psychological door matters.

Jesus consistently saw people whom society ignored.

And if we're going to follow Him—

WE CANNOT TRAIN OURSELVES TO LOOK AWAY.

Read Human Trafficking EXPOSED because knowledge can produce awareness.

Read it because awareness can produce vigilance.

Read it because vigilance can help protect people.

Read it because somebody else's freedom should matter to us.

👑 BOOK THREE: AND THE PEOPLE CRIED, “GIVE US A KING!”

Volume I

And the People Cried, “Give Us A King!” — Volume I on Amazon

Volume II

And the People Cried, “Give Us A King!” — Volume II on Amazon

Now we arrive at a completely different battlefield.

Or is it?

Thousands of years ago, Israel approached Samuel with a demand:

“Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” — 1 Samuel 8:5

There is one phrase in that verse that deserves our attention:

“LIKE ALL THE NATIONS.”

Israel had something extraordinary.

God had led them.

God had delivered them.

God had fought for them.

God had provided for them.

But they looked around at everybody else and decided:

WE WANT WHAT THEY HAVE.

Samuel warned them.

God warned them.

The consequences were explained.

Yet they insisted.

“Nay; but we will have a king over us.” — 1 Samuel 8:19

Those words ought to send a chill through us.

Not merely because of what Israel did—

but because human nature hasn't changed nearly as much as we'd like to think.

🗳️ WHO ARE YOU ASKING TO SAVE YOU?

That question reaches far beyond ancient Israel.

Human beings still search for kings.

We may not use that word.

We call them presidents.

Prime ministers.

Political parties.

Movements.

Ideologies.

Celebrities.

Business leaders.

Institutions.

Governments.

Influencers.

Sometimes even pastors.

We place tremendous expectations upon human beings and then become shocked when human beings behave like—

HUMAN BEINGS.

And the People Cried, “Give Us A King!” is therefore about more than ancient history.

The biblical account itself warns that Israel's demand represented something deeper than a change in governmental structure. God told Samuel:

“...they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.” — 1 Samuel 8:7

That is the spiritual danger.

The wrong king doesn't merely occupy a throne.

THE WRONG KING OCCUPIES A PLACE OF TRUST THAT BELONGS TO GOD.

⚖️ GOVERNMENT MATTERS—BUT GOVERNMENT ISN'T GOD

Christians should care about leadership.

We should vote responsibly where we possess that privilege.

We should pray for those in authority.

We should care about justice.

We should speak truth.

We should defend liberty.

We should hold leaders accountable.

But we should never confuse political participation with salvation.

No president can redeem the human heart.

No political party died for your sins.

No government can produce spiritual regeneration.

No election can substitute for revival.

No politician is the Messiah.

JESUS CHRIST ALREADY HOLDS THAT POSITION.

And He isn't running for reelection.

👑 WHY TWO VOLUMES?

Some subjects cannot responsibly be squeezed into a few pages.

Leadership, government, history, political power, human nature, biblical authority, national consequences, and the relationship between the governed and those who govern deserve room for examination.

That's why And the People Cried, “Give Us A King!” unfolds across Volume I and Volume II.

It asks readers to consider not merely:

Who is governing us?

But:

Why do we choose whom we choose?

What are we expecting government to accomplish?

How much authority are we willing to surrender?

What happens when loyalty to a leader becomes stronger than loyalty to truth?

And perhaps most importantly:

WHO IS REALLY KING OF OUR LIVES?

📚 SO WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU READ?

Maybe you're struggling spiritually.

Prayer feels difficult.

God seems far away.

You're tired of pretending everything is fine.

Start with:

WHEN PRAYER SEEMS SO DIFFICULT—PRAY ANYWAY.

Maybe you're concerned about children, vulnerable people, exploitation, crime, technology, international trafficking, or the hidden evil operating around us.

Start with:

HUMAN TRAFFICKING EXPOSED.

Maybe you're concerned about America.

Government.

Leadership.

Politics.

Power.

The relationship between faith and government.

Or the danger of putting too much confidence in human leaders.

Start with:

AND THE PEOPLE CRIED, “GIVE US A KING!”

Volume I.

Then continue into Volume II.

🔥 BUT READ AT LEAST ONE

That's my challenge.

READ ONE.

Not because my name appears on the cover.

Not because I want another book sold.

Read because these subjects matter.

Your prayer life matters.

Human freedom matters.

Who possesses your trust matters.

The decisions we make matter.

The people we ignore matter.

The leaders we choose matter.

And above everything else—

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD MATTERS.

💡 PERHAPS THAT IS WHAT CONNECTS ALL THREE

I've thought about what these seemingly different books have in common.

And perhaps it comes down to three questions:

WHEN LIFE BECOMES DIFFICULT—WILL YOU STILL TALK TO GOD?

That's When Prayer Seems So Difficult—Pray Anyway.

WHEN SOMEONE ELSE IS SUFFERING—WILL YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SEE THEM?

That's Human Trafficking EXPOSED.

WHEN HUMAN POWER PROMISES TO SOLVE EVERYTHING—WILL YOU REMEMBER WHO YOUR REAL KING IS?

That's And the People Cried, “Give Us A King!”

Prayer.

Compassion.

Discernment.

Those three things are desperately needed in our world.

🌎 BOOKS WITH A PURPOSE BEYOND THE PAGE

For us, these books are connected to something larger than publishing.

Writing is part of ministry.

Teaching is part of ministry.

Opening people's eyes is part of ministry.

Encouraging someone not to give up on prayer is ministry.

Helping expose human exploitation is ministry.

Challenging people to think biblically about leadership and power is ministry.

And the work continues far beyond the printed page through Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International and our missionary outreaches.

KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM IN BOOK FORM.

That is what we want our bookstore to represent.

Books that inform.

Books that challenge.

Books that encourage.

Books that make you think.

Books that send you back to Scripture.

Books that may cause you to see God, yourself, your neighbor, and the world around you differently.

✝️ THREE BOOKS. FOUR VOLUMES. ONE CHALLENGE.

I don't expect every book to speak to every reader in exactly the same way.

But I believe at least one of these subjects will find you where you live.

Maybe you need to rediscover prayer.

Maybe you need your eyes opened to suffering occurring beyond your immediate world.

Maybe you need to reconsider where you have placed your confidence when it comes to government and human leadership.

Whichever doorway you enter—

COME IN.

Read.

Think.

Pray.

Question.

Study Scripture.

And allow God to challenge you.

Because sometimes a book doesn't merely give us something new to read.

SOMETIMES IT GIVES US SOMETHING WE NEEDED TO THINK ABOUT.

WHICH ONE WILL YOU READ FIRST?
