STOP TRYING TO DEFEAT SIN
The Secret to Walking and Living in Christian Victory
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus… For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” — Romans 8:1–2
Are you tired?
Not physically tired.
Spiritually tired.
Tired of fighting the same battle.
Tired of promising God:
"I'll never do that again."
And then doing it again.
Tired of unholy thoughts.
Tired of secret sins.
Tired of bondage.
Tired of hypocrisy.
Tired of living one way around Christians and another way when nobody is watching.
Tired of asking forgiveness for something you thought you had already conquered.
Tired of trying harder—
AND STILL LOSING?
Then Romans 8 contains something you desperately need to understand.
The problem may not be that you aren't trying hard enough.
The problem may be that trying harder was never God's method of victory in the first place.
YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THE SIN NATURE
Let's begin with something our human pride doesn't particularly enjoy admitting:
YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THE SIN NATURE THROUGH YOUR OWN STRENGTH.
Neither can I.
Neither can your pastor.
Neither can the most spiritually mature Christian you know.
Human determination cannot conquer what Scripture describes as the power of sin operating through fallen humanity.
The problem began with Adam.
Romans 5:12 tells us:
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin…”
Through Adam's fall, sin entered the human experience.
Every person born into this world inherits the consequences of humanity's fallen condition.
And that fallen nature is not something you can simply educate away, discipline away, promise away, or overpower through willpower.
Sin is deceptive.
Sin is cunning.
Sin appeals to the flesh.
Sin knows exactly where human weakness lives.
Paul understood this struggle.
In Romans 7 he described the terrible frustration of wanting to do what was right while discovering another power working against that desire:
“For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” — Romans 7:19
Sound familiar?
"I know better."
"I don't want to do this."
"I promised God."
"Why do I keep going back?"
Paul eventually cries:
“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” — Romans 7:24
Notice the question.
Paul doesn't ask:
“What new technique will deliver me?”
He asks:
“WHO SHALL DELIVER ME?”
And the answer comes immediately:
“I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 7:25
There's the answer.
JESUS CHRIST.
THE BATTLE WAS WON AT CALVARY
You cannot defeat the sin nature.
But here's the Good News:
JESUS CHRIST ALREADY DEFEATED WHAT YOU CANNOT.
He did it at Calvary.
When Jesus declared:
“It is finished.” — John 19:30
He wasn't announcing defeat.
He was announcing completion.
The Cross wasn't an accident.
It wasn't merely the tragic death of a good man.
It wasn't Satan defeating Jesus.
And it certainly wasn't simply a wooden beam that became a religious symbol.
At Calvary, Jesus Christ offered Himself as the perfect, sufficient sacrifice for sin.
Hebrews 10:12 declares:
“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.”
ONE SACRIFICE.
Perfect.
Complete.
Sufficient.
Finished.
THE FIVE OFFERINGS POINTED FORWARD TO CHRIST
This becomes even more beautiful when we return to Leviticus.
The opening chapters describe five major offerings given to Israel under the Old Covenant:
The Burnt Offering in Leviticus 1.
The Grain or Meal Offering in Leviticus 2.
The Peace Offering in Leviticus 3.
The Sin or Purification Offering in Leviticus 4.
And the Guilt or Reparation Offering in Leviticus 5.
These sacrifices had distinct purposes within Israel's covenant worship, and Christians have long seen in them pictures that ultimately point toward the person and work of Jesus Christ.
The Burnt Offering pictures complete consecration and surrender.
The Grain Offering points toward the perfection of the life offered to God.
The Peace Offering speaks of fellowship and reconciliation with God.
The Sin Offering addresses guilt and purification from sin.
The Guilt Offering addresses wrong committed and the need for atonement and reparation.
Different pictures.
Different emphases.
But when we arrive at Calvary—
WE FIND THEIR FULFILLMENT IN CHRIST.
Jesus didn't need five separate deaths.
He offered one perfect sacrifice.
What those sacrifices anticipated in shadow, Christ accomplished in reality.
Hebrews 10:1 describes the Law as:
“…a shadow of good things to come…”
And Colossians 2:17 speaks of things that were:
“…a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
The shadows pointed forward.
THEN JESUS CAME.
CHRIST IS THE SOURCE. THE CROSS IS THE MEANS.
There is a simple statement that beautifully summarizes this truth:
JESUS CHRIST IS THE SOURCE.
THE CROSS IS THE MEANS.
Our victory originates in Christ.
And the basis upon which that victory was secured is His finished work at Calvary—His sacrificial death, shed Blood, burial, and victorious Resurrection.
When we speak of keeping our faith in Christ and the Cross, therefore, we are not talking about worshiping a piece of wood.
The wooden cross cannot save anyone.
We are talking about what Jesus Christ accomplished there.
That's the object of our faith.
Not ourselves.
Not our religious performance.
Not our ability.
Not our willpower.
Not our church membership.
Not our denomination.
Not our good intentions.
CHRIST AND HIS FINISHED WORK.
YOU TRUSTED HIM TO SAVE YOU—NOW TRUST HIM TO KEEP YOU
Here's where many Christians unknowingly change direction.
When we came to Jesus for salvation, we understood that we couldn't save ourselves.
We didn't say:
"Lord, I'll handle 70 percent of my salvation and You handle the remaining 30 percent."
No.
We came helpless.
We believed.
We trusted Christ.
We received grace.
Ephesians 2:8–9 says:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
But then something strange sometimes happens.
After being saved by faith, we begin attempting to live the Christian life through self-effort.
Paul confronted this exact problem:
“Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” — Galatians 3:3
That's an extraordinary question.
You began through faith.
Why are you now trying to finish through flesh?
TRY HARDER!
This is where many believers become trapped.
You fail.
So you try harder.
You fail again.
So you promise God you'll try even harder.
You fail again.
So you create more rules.
Then more rules.
Then more restrictions.
Then more promises.
Then more religious activity.
Eventually you're exhausted.
And worse—
you begin wondering whether Christianity actually works.
The problem isn't Christianity.
THE PROBLEM IS THE SOURCE OF YOUR STRENGTH.
You're asking human strength to accomplish something only divine power can accomplish.
Jesus said:
“…for without me ye can do nothing.” — John 15:5
Nothing means nothing.
ROMANS 8 REVEALS THE SECRET
After the terrible struggle described in Romans 7, Paul arrives at one of the greatest declarations in Scripture:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” — Romans 8:1
Then comes the key:
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” — Romans 8:2
Notice who produces freedom.
THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS.
Not James Langston.
Not you.
Not your pastor.
Not your determination.
THE HOLY SPIRIT.
Romans 8 isn't teaching Christians how to become stronger versions of themselves.
It is revealing how God accomplishes in us what we cannot accomplish ourselves.
THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES WHAT YOU CANNOT
When our faith rests in Christ and what He accomplished, the Holy Spirit works within us.
He convicts.
He teaches.
He guides.
He strengthens.
He produces spiritual fruit.
He changes desires.
He develops Christlike character.
He empowers obedience.
Galatians 5:16 says:
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Notice the order.
It doesn't say:
“Defeat the flesh, and then you'll be spiritual enough to walk in the Spirit.”
It says:
WALK IN THE SPIRIT.
The result follows.
THEN WHAT MUST I DO?
If you've spent years trying to manufacture Christian victory through your own strength, your first response may surprise you.
1. REPENT OF DEPENDING UPON YOURSELF.
This doesn't mean repent of wanting victory.
That's good.
Repent of believing that you could produce it independently of God's grace and power.
Tell the Lord:
"Father, I've been trying to do through my strength what only You can accomplish through Your Spirit."
Self-effort can look extremely religious.
But flesh wearing church clothes is still flesh.
2. RETURN YOUR FAITH TO CHRIST AND HIS FINISHED WORK
Ask God continually to keep your heart anchored in what Jesus accomplished at Calvary.
Not the wooden beam.
THE EVENT.
The sacrifice.
The Blood.
The death.
The burial.
The Resurrection.
The victory.
When Satan whispers:
"You'll never change,"
your answer isn't:
“Yes I will! Watch me try harder!”
Your answer is:
“JESUS CHRIST HAS ALREADY WON.”
3. KEEP BELIEVING GOD'S PROMISES
Romans 8 should become familiar territory.
Read it.
Study it.
Pray through it.
Return to it.
“If God be for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31
And:
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” — Romans 8:37
Notice again:
THROUGH HIM.
Not through us.
4. BELIEVE. ACCEPT. RECEIVE.
Believe what Christ accomplished.
Accept that His victory is sufficient.
Receive by faith what God has provided.
Then walk in obedience to the Holy Spirit.
This isn't passive Christianity.
Faith doesn't mean sitting down and saying:
"God will do everything, so nothing is required of me."
We pray.
We study Scripture.
We resist temptation.
We flee situations that lead us into sin.
We make wise decisions.
We obey.
We discipline ourselves.
We fellowship with believers.
We pursue holiness.
But here's the difference:
THOSE THINGS ARE EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH—NOT REPLACEMENTS FOR FAITH.
We don't perform spiritual disciplines to make the Cross effective.
We practice them because Christ's finished work has opened the way for us to live by the power of the Holy Spirit.
DON'T LIVE BY YOUR FEELINGS
This may be one of the most important things in this entire message.
STOP MEASURING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD BY HOW YOU FEEL TODAY.
Some mornings you'll wake up feeling wonderful.
Other mornings you won't.
Some days prayer will seem effortless.
Other days you'll struggle to say ten words.
Some days you'll feel victorious.
Other days you'll wonder what happened.
Faith isn't feeling.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Your feelings change.
God's Word doesn't.
“BUT PASTOR, WHAT IF I FAIL AGAIN?”
You probably will.
I wish I could tell you that after understanding Romans 8 you will never again fail God.
That isn't biblical reality.
We are growing.
We are learning.
We are being sanctified.
There will be moments when you say something you shouldn't.
Think something you shouldn't.
Do something you shouldn't.
Respond in the flesh.
Become angry.
Act selfishly.
Ignore God's warning.
And disappoint the Lord.
What then?
GO HOME.
Not to your physical house.
Go back to your Heavenly Father.
First John 1:9 says:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Confess it.
Repent.
Receive forgiveness.
Learn from it.
Get up.
And continue walking.
GRACE IS NOT A “GET OUT OF JAIL FREE” CARD
We must be equally clear about this.
First John 1:9 is not permission to deliberately live in sin.
Grace isn't a loophole.
Forgiveness isn't a license.
Paul anticipated that distortion:
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.” — Romans 6:1–2
The attitude:
"I can do whatever I want because God will forgive me later"
is not repentance.
True repentance doesn't make peace with sin.
It wants freedom from it.
Grace doesn't make sin unimportant.
GRACE MAKES VICTORY POSSIBLE.
STOP STARING AT YOUR FAILURE
Some Christians spend more time studying their failures than studying Jesus.
Every morning:
"I'm terrible."
Every evening:
"I failed again."
Every prayer:
"God must be disgusted with me."
Every setback:
"I'll never change."
If that's you—
look up.
Hebrews 12:2 says:
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…”
Not looking unto yourself.
LOOKING UNTO JESUS.
You will never find victory by endlessly examining your inability.
You find victory by trusting His sufficiency.
YOUR VICTORY IS HIS VICTORY
This is where the entire message comes together.
You don't have to manufacture victory.
CHRIST WON IT.
You don't have to defeat Satan.
CHRIST DEFEATED HIM.
You don't have to create a way to God.
CHRIST IS THE WAY.
You don't have to invent a method for overcoming sin.
GOD HAS PROVIDED THE HOLY SPIRIT.
You don't have to make Calvary sufficient.
JESUS SAID, “IT IS FINISHED.”
Your responsibility is to believe.
Trust.
Yield.
Obey.
And continue walking by faith.
WHEN YOU FALL—LOOK BACK TO CALVARY
When you fail, the temptation is to look inward.
"Why am I like this?"
Sometimes honest self-examination is necessary.
But don't remain there.
Look to Jesus.
When Peter began sinking after walking on the water, he didn't deliver a theological speech.
He cried:
“Lord, save me.” — Matthew 14:30
And Scripture says:
“And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand…” — Matthew 14:31
Immediately.
There is something beautiful about that word.
Peter failed.
Jesus didn't abandon him in the water.
VICTORY IS A WALK
Don't misunderstand the phrase victorious Christian life.
It doesn't mean a life without battles.
It means you know where victory comes from in the battle.
It doesn't mean you'll never face temptation.
It means temptation no longer has to be your master.
It doesn't mean you'll never stumble.
It means falling doesn't have to become your permanent address.
It doesn't mean you'll never experience weakness.
It means you've learned:
“…when I am weak, then am I strong.” — 2 Corinthians 12:10
Why?
Because weakness drives us away from confidence in ourselves—
AND BACK TO DEPENDENCE UPON CHRIST.
JESUS CHRIST IS THE SOURCE.
THE CROSS IS THE MEANS.
THE HOLY SPIRIT SUPPLIES THE POWER.
FAITH IS HOW WE RECEIVE.
And that's why Romans 8:2 is so powerful:
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
Not might make me free.
Not could possibly make me free.
HATH MADE ME FREE.
ARE YOU TIRED OF LOSING?
Then stop trying to become your own saviour.
Stop depending upon willpower.
Stop trusting religious performance.
Stop making promises your flesh cannot keep.
Come back to Jesus.
Come back to what He accomplished.
Tell Him:
“Lord, I cannot do this—but You already have.”
Believe.
Accept.
Receive.
Yield to the Holy Spirit.
Obey His Word.
And tomorrow—
do it again.
And the next day—
again.
That's walking by faith.
🙏 PRAYER FOR VICTORY
Heavenly Father, I confess that I have often tried through my own strength to accomplish what only Your Spirit can accomplish. Forgive me for depending upon myself. I place my faith again in Jesus Christ and His finished work at Calvary—His perfect sacrifice, His shed Blood, His death, burial, and victorious Resurrection. Lord, keep my heart anchored there. Holy Spirit, guide me, strengthen me, correct me, teach me, and produce within me what I cannot produce myself. When I fail, help me run toward You instead of away from You. Keep me from abusing Your grace, and create within me a genuine desire for holiness and obedience. I believe Your Word. I accept what Christ has accomplished. I receive Your grace. Teach me to walk in the Spirit and live by faith. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
STOP TRYING TO WIN A BATTLE JESUS ALREADY WON.
Believe.
Accept.
Receive.
Trust.
Yield.
Obey.
And when you stumble—
get back up and return to the Cross.
Because:
JESUS CHRIST IS THE SOURCE.
THE CROSS IS THE MEANS.
AND HIS VICTORY CAN BECOME YOUR DAILY WALK.
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” — Romans 8:2
