🙏 PRAYER CHANGES THINGS
Jesus Didn’t Say “If You Pray”—He Taught Us, “When You Pray”
Scriptural Basis: John 14:13–14
There are three simple words every Christian should take seriously:
PRAYER CHANGES THINGS.
Sometimes prayer changes our circumstances.
Sometimes prayer changes another person.
Sometimes prayer opens a door.
Sometimes prayer closes one.
Sometimes prayer brings healing.
Sometimes prayer brings provision.
Sometimes prayer gives us direction.
Sometimes prayer changes us while we're waiting for the situation around us to change.
But this much I know:
PRAYER MATTERS.
Jesus said:
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” — John 14:13–14
Those are powerful words.
But they aren't an invitation to treat God like a vending machine.
They are an invitation into a life of dependence upon Him.

And more importantly—
PRAY.
Because we can watch a thousand sermons about prayer and still never actually pray.
We can buy books about prayer.
Attend prayer conferences.
Listen to testimonies about prayer.
Highlight Scriptures about prayer.
Talk about prayer.
Preach about prayer.
Teach about prayer.
And still neglect the very thing we're discussing.
At some point—
WE HAVE TO PRAY.
✝️ “WHEN YOU PRAY...”
In Matthew 6, Jesus repeatedly used an important expression:
“When thou prayest...” — Matthew 6:6
Notice what He didn't say.
He didn't say:
“If you ever decide to pray...”
He said:
“WHEN...”
Prayer was expected to be part of the believer's life.
Not occasionally.
Not only during emergencies.
Not merely when we're afraid.
Not only when the doctor gives us bad news.
Not just when the bills exceed the money.
Not simply when our marriage is struggling.
Not only when our children are in trouble.
WHEN YOU PRAY.
Prayer should be as natural to the Christian life as breathing is to the physical life.
🚨 GOD IS NOT JUST OUR 911 NUMBER
There is nothing wrong with emergency prayer.
I've prayed plenty of them.
Sometimes all you have time to say is:
“JESUS!”
And He hears.
But suppose the only time your spouse heard from you was when you needed money.
Suppose your children called only when their car broke down.
Suppose your friend contacted you only when they needed a favor.
Eventually you'd wonder:
“Is that all this relationship means to you?”
Yet sometimes that's how we approach God.
We disappear for days, weeks, or months.
Then trouble arrives:
“LORD!”
And thankfully, God is merciful.
But prayer was meant to be more than an emergency hotline.
PRAYER IS RELATIONSHIP.
📖 “ASK IN MY NAME”
Jesus said:
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name...” — John 14:13
Praying in Jesus' name means more than attaching:
“In Jesus' name, Amen”
to the end of whatever we want.
The name of Jesus isn't a magical formula.
To pray in His name means that our prayers should be consistent with His character, His authority, His purposes, and God's will.
First John 5:14 adds an important truth:
“...if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.”
Prayer isn't about bending God's will toward ours.
Prayer increasingly brings our hearts into alignment with His.
Sometimes the most powerful prayer we can pray is:
“FATHER, YOUR WILL BE DONE.”
🙏 PRAY WHEN THINGS ARE GOING WELL
This is where many of us struggle.
When the bills are paid—
pray.
When everybody is healthy—
pray.
When the marriage is strong—
pray.
When your children are doing well—
pray.
When the job is secure—
pray.
When the refrigerator is full—
pray.
When you're sleeping peacefully—
pray.
When life is good—
PRAY.
Don't wait for something to go wrong before remembering the One who blessed you when everything was going right.
🌧️ PRAY WHEN THINGS ARE FALLING APART
And then there are those seasons.
The phone call you never wanted.
The diagnosis.
The layoff.
The family crisis.
The child who has wandered.
The marriage under strain.
The unexpected expense.
The death.
The betrayal.
The loneliness.
The night when sleep simply will not come.
What do you do?
PRAY.
You don't need eloquent words.
You don't need a theological degree.
You don't have to impress God.
Sometimes prayer is:
“Father, help me.”
Sometimes:
“Lord, I don't understand.”
Sometimes:
“Jesus, I'm afraid.”
Sometimes:
“God, I don't know what to do.”
And sometimes prayer contains more tears than words.
PRAY ANYWAY.
⏳ PRAY WHEN NOTHING SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING
Perhaps this is the hardest one.
You've prayed.
And prayed.
And prayed again.
Nothing appears to change.
Heaven seems silent.
What then?
KEEP PRAYING.
Jesus taught that people “ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1).
Paul wrote:
“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17
That doesn't mean Christians must remain on their knees twenty-four hours a day.
It describes a life continually open toward God.
A praying heart.
A praying attitude.
A life of dependence.
You pray in the morning.
You whisper a prayer while driving.
You pray before making the decision.
You pray for the person God suddenly places on your heart.
You pray before bed.
You wake during the night and pray.
PRAYER BECOMES PART OF WHO YOU ARE.
🔥 DON'T CONFUSE DELAY WITH ABSENCE
God doesn't always answer according to our timetable.
And His answer isn't always the answer we requested.
Sometimes God says yes.
Sometimes the answer appears to be no.
Sometimes we wait.
Sometimes He provides something entirely different from what we expected.
That can be difficult.
But unanswered questions don't mean an absent God.
FAITH CONTINUES PRAYING EVEN WHILE WAITING.
❤️ SOMETIMES PRAYER CHANGES YOU
We often enter prayer saying:
“Lord, change this situation.”
Then somewhere during the praying, something unexpected happens.
God begins working on us.
Our anger softens.
Our fear decreases.
Our perspective changes.
We forgive.
We surrender.
We recognize something we couldn't see before.
Peace begins replacing panic.
We entered prayer asking God to change everybody else—
and discovered He wanted to do something inside us.
That's another reason:
PRAYER CHANGES THINGS.
👨👩👧👦 PRAY FOR SOMEBODY BESIDES YOURSELF
Prayer shouldn't always revolve around:
me, mine, my problems, my needs, my plans.
Pray for your spouse.
Pray for your children.
Pray for your grandchildren.
Pray for your pastor.
Pray for missionaries.
Pray for teachers.
Pray for your neighbors.
Pray for people suffering through war and disaster.
Pray for the sick.
Pray for the lonely.
Pray for the lost.
Pray for those who have hurt you.
Yes—
PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMIES.
Jesus told us to do that too.
🌎 PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
Our world desperately needs prayer.
War.
Violence.
Poverty.
Human trafficking.
Hunger.
Natural disasters.
Political division.
Families struggling.
Children hurting.
People searching for meaning.
Churches needing revival.
Missionaries needing strength.
Entire communities needing the Gospel.
We can become so overwhelmed by the size of the problems that we ask:
“What can I possibly do?”
Start here:
PRAY.
Prayer isn't the only thing Christians should do.
Sometimes prayer should move us to give.
Serve.
Go.
Help.
Speak.
Forgive.
Act.
But never underestimate prayer simply because you cannot see immediately what God is doing.
🙌 “THAT THE FATHER MAY BE GLORIFIED”
Don't miss the end of John 14:13:
“...that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
There is the ultimate purpose.
GOD'S GLORY.
Not ours.
Prayer isn't about demonstrating how spiritual we are.
It isn't about making ourselves famous.
It isn't about getting everything we've ever wanted.
The answered prayer should ultimately point beyond the answer—
TO THE GOD WHO ANSWERED.
When God provides—
thank Him.
When God heals—
glorify Him.
When God opens the door—
honor Him.
When God carries you through something you thought would destroy you—
TELL SOMEBODY WHAT GOD DID.
🕰️ WHEN SHOULD I PRAY?
Morning?
PRAY.
Afternoon?
PRAY.
Night?
PRAY.
Good day?
Pray.
Bad day?
Pray.
Confused?
Pray.
Thankful?
Pray.
Afraid?
Pray.
Waiting?
Pray.
Tempted?
Pray.
Hurting?
Pray.
Celebrating?
Pray.
Don't reduce prayer to something you do every now and then when you feel like it.
MAKE PRAYER A WAY OF LIFE.
🙏 LET'S PRAY RIGHT NOW
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us for the times we've treated prayer as a last resort instead of a privilege.
Forgive us when we have talked more about prayer than we have actually prayed.
Teach us to pray.
Teach us to seek You when life is good and when life is difficult.
Help us pray when we feel Your presence and continue praying when You seem silent.
Teach us to ask in the name of Jesus—not selfishly, not presumptuously, but surrendered to Your purposes and Your will.
Strengthen every person reading this.
Somebody needs healing.
Somebody needs provision.
Somebody needs direction.
Somebody needs peace.
Somebody's marriage needs restoration.
Somebody is worried about their child.
Somebody is grieving.
Somebody is lonely.
Somebody is fighting temptation.
Somebody is waiting for an answer that has not yet come.
Lord, meet them where they are.
And while we wait for circumstances to change, change whatever needs changing inside us.
Make us people of prayer.
Make our homes houses of prayer.
Make our churches houses of prayer.
Make this ministry a ministry of prayer.
And through every answer, every provision, every miracle, every open door, and every testimony—
MAY THE FATHER BE GLORIFIED IN THE SON.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
🙏 PRAYER CHANGES THINGS
Maybe the situation changes.
Maybe the door opens.
Maybe provision comes.
Maybe healing comes.
Maybe direction comes.
Maybe God gives you strength to endure something He has not yet removed.
Maybe the first thing that changes—
IS YOU.
But whatever happens:
DON'T STOP PRAYING.
Jesus said:
“WHEN YOU PRAY...”
Not once a month.
Not only in trouble.
Not merely when you feel spiritual.
PRAY CONTINUALLY.
Pray when you wake up.
Pray through your day.
Pray before decisions.
Pray for others.
Pray when you're thankful.
Pray when you're hurting.
Pray when you understand.
Pray when you don't.
And when you've prayed and the answer hasn't arrived yet—
PRAY AGAIN.
Because prayer isn't merely something Christians do.
It should become part of how Christians live.
