🏆 PLEASE PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE UNIFORMS
Professional Athletes May Look Larger Than Life—But Beneath the Jersey, the Helmet, the Medals, and the Millions Is a Human Being Who Needs Prayer
“Brethren, pray for us.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:25
There is something we at Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International want professional athletes everywhere to know:
WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOU.
Football players.
Basketball players.
Baseball players.
Soccer players.
Boxers.
Golfers.
Tennis players.
Hockey players.
Race-car drivers.
Track-and-field athletes.
MMA fighters.
Olympians.
Professional wrestlers and sports entertainers.
Women and men competing professionally in every sport, in every country, at every level.
We pray for your strength, resilience, protection, families, decisions, mental and emotional well-being, and your lives away from competition.
Keep pushing forward.
Keep getting back up.
Keep using the gifts God has given you.
And above everything else, never become so consumed by the game that you forget the God who gave you the ability to play it.
👀 WE SEE THE ATHLETE—BUT DO WE SEE THE PERSON?
Most of us encounter professional athletes through a screen.
We see the touchdown.
The home run.
The three-pointer.
The knockout.
The championship.
The record-breaking performance.
The medal ceremony.
The endorsement.
The multimillion-dollar contract.
We see the cameras flashing and thousands of people chanting their names.
And because of that, it becomes remarkably easy to conclude:
“WHAT COULD THEY POSSIBLY NEED PRAYER FOR?”
Plenty.
Because when the stadium empties, the uniform comes off.
When the cameras stop rolling, the person remains.
When the cheering stops, an athlete may return to a hotel room, apartment, or house where the trophies cannot answer life's deepest questions.
Professional athletes may possess abilities most of us can only imagine.
BUT THEY ARE STILL HUMAN.
And human beings need prayer.
🚑 1. EVERY PLAY CAN CHANGE A CAREER
Professional sports can be breathtakingly beautiful.
They can also be brutally physical.
One awkward landing.
One collision.
One punch.
One tackle.
One torn ligament.
One concussion.
One unexpected diagnosis.
And years of preparation can suddenly meet a frightening question:
“WILL I EVER PLAY AGAIN?”
We sometimes watch an injured athlete leave the field and begin discussing how the injury affects our favorite team's season.
But think about the person being carried away.
He or she may be wondering:
What happens to my career?
Will surgery work?
Will I recover completely?
Will another team want me?
Will I lose my position?
Can I provide for my family?
What will my body feel like when I'm 50?
The exact percentage of professional athletes suffering career-ending or career-limiting injuries varies greatly by sport and how “significant injury” is defined, so I would be cautious about repeating a blanket claim that “nearly 50%” experience such injuries.
But the underlying truth needs no exaggeration:
INJURY IS AN EVER-PRESENT REALITY IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS.
And some consequences can follow an athlete long after the cheering stops.
So pray for their bodies.
Pray for the injured.
Pray for those undergoing surgery.
Pray for those in rehabilitation.
Pray for those privately wondering whether their last game really was their last game.
🧠 2. THE MIND CAN HURT EVEN WHEN THE BODY LOOKS STRONG
Elite athletes are often expected to be mentally invincible.
“Shake it off.”
“Be tough.”
“Next play.”
“Don't let them see you hurt.”
“Perform.”
“Win.”
But mental health doesn't disappear because someone can run faster, jump higher, throw farther, or withstand punishment better than most people.
A major 2026 International Olympic Committee consensus statement concluded that mental-health symptoms and disorders are common among elite athletes, may have sport-specific causes and manifestations, and can affect performance. A supporting systematic review of 72 studies found substantial variation depending on the symptom studied; among current elite athletes, pooled estimates ranged from 4% for drug misuse to 33% for distress.
Think about what surrounds many professional athletes:
Pressure to perform.
Fear of injury.
Contract uncertainty.
Constant travel.
Separation from family.
Public criticism.
Online abuse.
Media scrutiny.
Expectations from coaches, owners, teammates, sponsors, fans—and sometimes relatives.
Then imagine carrying a personal problem into the arena and being expected to perform flawlessly while thousands of strangers analyze every mistake.
MONEY DOESN'T MAKE A PERSON IMMUNE TO ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, LONELINESS, OR BURNOUT.
Neither does fame.
📱 3. THE CROWD DOESN'T GO HOME ANYMORE
There was a time when an athlete could leave the stadium and largely leave the crowd behind.
Social media changed that.
Today the crowd follows them home.
Make a bad play?
Thousands of people can tell you about it before you've showered.
Miss a shot?
Your mentions explode.
Lose the championship?
Strangers who have never met you may attack your intelligence, character, family, appearance, race, nationality, or worth as a human being.
Play brilliantly?
Tomorrow they'll expect you to do it again.
THE SAME PEOPLE WHO CROWN YOU TODAY MAY CRUCIFY YOU TOMORROW.
That is a dangerous place to build your identity.
And athlete, if you're reading this:
Your value cannot be measured by your statistics.
Your worth doesn't rise because millions applaud you or disappear because they boo you.
YOU ARE MORE THAN YOUR LAST PERFORMANCE.
💰 4. “BUT THEY MAKE MILLIONS!”
Some do.
Many professional athletes earn substantial incomes, while compensation differs enormously by sport, league, country, gender, roster status, career length, endorsements, and level of competition.
But we should also correct a statistic that has circulated for years.
You may have heard that 60% of NBA players go bankrupt within five years of retirement. That figure has been widely repeated, but it should not be treated as a reliable current statistic without strong supporting evidence.
The broader financial concern, however, is legitimate.
An athlete's peak earning years can be unusually short. Income may fall dramatically after retirement, while taxes, agents, managers, homes, family obligations, business investments, lifestyle expenses, and sometimes poor financial advice remain.
And suddenly a 30-something-year-old retiree has to make money earned during a relatively brief career last for decades.
A LARGE PAYCHECK IS NOT THE SAME THING AS FINANCIAL WISDOM.
So pray that athletes surround themselves with honest people.
Pray for trustworthy advisers.
Pray for wisdom.
Pray that wealth becomes a tool instead of a trap.
“For the love of money is the root of all evil...” — 1 Timothy 6:10
Notice Scripture doesn't say money itself is evil.
Money can build hospitals.
Feed families.
Support missionaries.
Educate children.
Help parents.
Fund businesses.
Provide employment.
Bless communities.
The question is:
WHO OWNS WHOM?
🪞 5. “WHO AM I IF I CAN'T PLAY?”
This may be one of the hardest questions an athlete ever faces.
Imagine beginning a sport at five or six years old.
You become good.
Then very good.
People begin identifying you by what you do.
You are the quarterback.
The boxer.
The point guard.
The pitcher.
The striker.
The champion.
Then one day—
it's over.
Maybe because of age.
Maybe injury.
Maybe your contract wasn't renewed.
Maybe somebody younger arrived.
Maybe you simply decided it was time.
Suddenly the question becomes:
“WHO AM I NOW?”
The 2026 IOC consensus specifically identifies athletes transitioning out of elite sport as a population with distinct mental-health concerns that deserves further attention.
That shouldn't surprise us.
When your occupation and identity become almost indistinguishable, retirement can feel like losing part of yourself.
This is one reason athletes need something greater than sports upon which to build their lives.
Championships eventually become memories.
Records eventually get broken.
Jerseys eventually come off.
Crowds eventually find another superstar.
BUT GOD REMAINS.
💪 6. THE BODY PAYS A PRICE FOR GREATNESS
What spectators call entertainment often requires tremendous sacrifice from the athlete.
Early mornings.
Weight rooms.
Film study.
Conditioning.
Strict nutrition.
Rehabilitation.
Travel.
Practice.
Pain management.
Repeated competition.
Missing holidays.
Time away from children.
Playing hurt.
Training while everyone else sleeps.
Then repeating the process tomorrow.
We often see the two-hour game.
WE DON'T SEE THE THOUSANDS OF HOURS THAT MADE THOSE TWO HOURS POSSIBLE.
So when you see greatness on the field, court, track, ice, ring, course, or pitch, remember that excellence usually has a price.
Pray for their strength.
Pray for their recovery.
Pray for their families.
💵 7. ARE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES OVERPAID?
This question generates plenty of debate.
Some people look at enormous sports contracts and say:
“Nobody should make that much money for playing a game.”
Others respond:
“If millions of people pay to watch them, purchase merchandise, subscribe to broadcasts, and support the industry, athletes deserve their share of the revenue they help generate.”
Both perspectives explain why the subject remains controversial.
But there's something Christians should remember:
A PERSON'S SALARY DOESN'T DETERMINE WHETHER THEY NEED PRAYER.
Rich people need Jesus.
Poor people need Jesus.
Famous people need Jesus.
Unknown people need Jesus.
Champions need Jesus.
People sitting in the last row of the stadium need Jesus.
The Gospel doesn't change according to somebody's tax bracket.
🙏 STOP PRAYING ONLY FOR YOUR TEAM TO WIN
Here's a challenge for Christian sports fans.
How often have we prayed:
“Lord, let my team win!”
What if we prayed something deeper?
Lord, protect these athletes.
Protect their families.
Strengthen those who are injured.
Comfort those struggling privately.
Give them wisdom with money and relationships.
Protect them from addiction and destructive temptations.
Surround them with people who genuinely love them instead of merely loving their fame.
Help them discover who they are beyond their sport.
And most importantly:
LORD, DRAW THEM TO JESUS CHRIST.
Now that's a sports prayer worth praying.
🏟️ TO EVERY PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE WHO MAY READ THIS
We may never meet you.
We'll probably never sit courtside.
We may never have locker-room access.
You may never know our names.
But Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International is praying for professional athletes across every sport.
Not simply for victories.
Not merely for championships.
FOR YOU.
The person.
Your health.
Your mind.
Your family.
Your future.
Your decisions.
Your relationship with God.
Your life after sports.
Your eternal soul.
We want you to know:
WE'RE PRAYING FOR YOUR STRENGTH, RESILIENCE, AND WELL-BEING—BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD.
Keep shining.
Keep pushing forward.
When you fall, get back up.
When you're injured, give yourself permission to heal.
When you're struggling mentally or emotionally, seeking qualified help is not weakness.
When the crowd becomes cruel, remember that the crowd doesn't determine your worth.
When money comes, ask God for wisdom.
When success comes, remain humble.
When retirement comes, remember—
YOUR PURPOSE DOESN'T RETIRE WHEN YOUR JERSEY DOES.
And while you're pursuing greatness, don't forget the greatest victory available to any human being:
KNOWING JESUS CHRIST.
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36
🙏 OUR PRAYER FOR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES
Father,
Today we bring before You professional athletes throughout the world.
Every sport.
Every league.
Every country.
Every level.
Protect their bodies from injury and strengthen those already hurt.
Give wisdom to their doctors, trainers, coaches, and medical teams.
Strengthen their minds when pressure becomes overwhelming.
Comfort those battling anxiety, depression, loneliness, fear, burnout, or uncertainty.
Protect their marriages and families.
Give them trustworthy friends.
Surround them with people who love the person, not merely the athlete.
Give them wisdom concerning money, contracts, investments, relationships, and their futures.
Help them understand that their identity is greater than a jersey number, ranking, championship, statistic, endorsement, or salary.
For those approaching retirement, reveal that there is life, meaning, purpose, and opportunity beyond competition.
And above all, Father, place people across their paths who will lovingly point them toward Jesus Christ.
When the crowd cheers—
keep them humble.
When the crowd boos—
keep them strong.
When they win—
give them gratitude.
When they lose—
give them perspective.
When they're injured—
give them patience.
When they're afraid—
give them peace.
And when they wonder whether anybody sees the person behind the uniform—
REMIND THEM THAT YOU DO.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
🏆 CHRISTIAN SPORTS FANS—LET'S DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
The next time you watch a game, don't merely cheer.
PRAY.
When an athlete gets hurt—
pray.
When somebody makes the mistake that costs the game—
pray.
When an athlete is being publicly torn apart—
pray.
When you hear about a player struggling away from the sport—
pray.
When somebody signs a huge contract—
pray for wisdom.
When a veteran retires—
pray for the next chapter.
And yes, even when the athlete plays for the team you can't stand—
PRAY FOR THEM TOO.
Because before they're athletes—
THEY'RE PEOPLE.
And people need prayer.
