🔥 THE NINE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

God’s Supernatural Gifts Were Never Given to Make Us Look Spiritual—They Were Given to Build His Church

Scriptural Basis: 1 Corinthians 12:8–12

There are portions of Scripture that should cause every believer to slow down, read carefully, and ask:

“Lord, what are You showing Your Church?”

First Corinthians 12 is one of them.

Paul writes about something that has sometimes been misunderstood, neglected, abused, sensationalized—or, at the opposite extreme, virtually ignored:

THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

These gifts are not spiritual trophies.

They are not badges proving that one Christian is more important than another.

They are not entertainment.

They are not tools for building somebody's personal ministry empire.

And they certainly were never intended to glorify the person through whom they operate.

Paul establishes the governing principle before listing the gifts:

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” — 1 Corinthians 12:7

Notice the language.

THE MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT.

The emphasis is not upon how impressive the believer is.

The emphasis is upon the Holy Spirit.

And the purpose?

FOR THE COMMON GOOD.

📖 WHAT ARE THE NINE GIFTS?

First Corinthians 12:8–10 identifies nine manifestations:

The Word of Wisdom
The Word of Knowledge
Faith
Gifts of Healing
Working of Miracles
Prophecy
Discerning of Spirits
Divers Kinds of Tongues
Interpretation of Tongues

Then Paul immediately reminds us:

“But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” — 1 Corinthians 12:11

Those last words are extremely important:

“AS HE WILL.”

The Holy Spirit is sovereign.

We don't command Him.

We don't manufacture manifestations.

We don't manipulate people into producing them.

The gifts belong to God, and the Spirit distributes them according to His will.

Let's look at each one.

🧠 1. THE WORD OF WISDOM

“For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom...” — 1 Corinthians 12:8

What is it?

The word of wisdom is a Spirit-given expression of divine wisdom appropriate to a particular situation or need.

Notice Paul does not simply say wisdom.

He says:

“the word of wisdom.”

This isn't merely intelligence, education, common sense, age, or life experience.

Its Purpose

To provide Spirit-directed wisdom when human understanding alone is insufficient.

There are moments when the Church faces circumstances requiring more than:

“Here's what I think we should do.”

We need:

“Lord, what would You have us do?”

Its Intent

God's wisdom brings direction, clarity, counsel, and proper application of truth.

It doesn't exist to make someone appear brilliant.

It exists to help God's people move according to His purposes.

Its Manifestation

It may operate through Spirit-directed counsel, preaching, teaching, leadership, or an utterance that brings extraordinary clarity to a difficult circumstance.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To move us away from dependence upon human reasoning alone and toward dependence upon God's wisdom.

GOD KNOWS WHAT WE DON'T KNOW.

🔍 2. THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE

“...to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 12:8

What is it?

The word of knowledge is a Spirit-given communication of knowledge pertinent to a person, circumstance, or ministry need.

Again, this is not simply having studied extensively.

Education is valuable.

Bible study is essential.

But this gift points to knowledge supplied through the Spirit's operation.

Its Purpose

To bring information or understanding needed for God's work.

Its Intent

Not curiosity.

Not exposing people's private lives for entertainment.

Not demonstrating how “spiritual” someone is.

The purpose is ministry.

Its Manifestation

It may involve insight into circumstances that enables prayer, encouragement, correction, protection, or ministry to proceed according to God's direction.

And because claims of supernatural knowledge can be abused, they must remain accountable to Scripture and spiritual discernment.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To remind us that God sees what we cannot see and knows what we cannot know.

NOTHING IS HIDDEN FROM GOD.

🛡️ 3. THE GIFT OF FAITH

“To another faith by the same Spirit...” — 1 Corinthians 12:9

Every Christian exercises faith.

We are saved through faith.

We walk by faith.

We pray in faith.

But Paul identifies here a particular manifestation of faith among the gifts of the Spirit.

What is it?

A Spirit-enabled confidence in God concerning a particular circumstance, need, promise, or undertaking.

Its Purpose

To enable extraordinary trust in God's ability when circumstances appear impossible.

Its Intent

To move God's people beyond what they can accomplish through natural resources and human confidence.

Its Manifestation

When everybody else sees the mountain—

faith sees God.

When resources appear inadequate—

faith sees God.

When circumstances say impossible—

faith says:

“BUT GOD.”

This isn't presumption.

It isn't recklessness.

It isn't ordering God around.

It is extraordinary confidence produced by the Holy Spirit.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To teach us that our limitations are not God's limitations.

❤️‍🩹 4. GIFTS OF HEALING

“...to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 12:9

Notice something interesting.

Paul uses the plural:

GIFTS OF HEALING.

What is it?

The Spirit's supernatural working through which healing is ministered according to God's will.

Its Purpose

To demonstrate God's compassion and power and to minister to human suffering.

Jesus' earthly ministry repeatedly demonstrated compassion toward the sick.

Its Intent

Healing isn't about making a minister famous.

It isn't about creating spectacle.

The suffering person should never become a prop for someone's ministry.

PEOPLE MATTER.

Its Manifestation

Healing may accompany prayer and the laying on of hands as believers trust God for His intervention.

Christians should also remember that seeking medical care is not evidence of insufficient faith. Medicine and prayer need not be enemies.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To reveal God's compassion, encourage faith, edify His people, and ultimately bring glory to Jesus Christ.

🔥 5. THE WORKING OF MIRACLES

“To another the working of miracles...” — 1 Corinthians 12:10

What is it?

A supernatural intervention of God's power beyond ordinary human capability.

Its Purpose

To accomplish something that natural means cannot accomplish and to bear witness to God's power and purposes.

Its Intent

Miracles point beyond themselves.

The miracle isn't supposed to become the destination.

GOD IS.

Its Manifestation

Scripture contains many examples of divine intervention:

The Red Sea opened.

Provision came supernaturally.

Jesus calmed the storm.

Multitudes were fed.

Prison doors opened.

These events directed attention toward God's authority and power.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To remind us that Christianity isn't founded upon what human beings can accomplish for God—

but upon what God can accomplish through human beings yielded to Him.

📣 6. PROPHECY

“...to another prophecy...” — 1 Corinthians 12:10

Few spiritual gifts require more biblical care than this one.

What is it?

A Spirit-inspired utterance intended to communicate what God desires spoken for the benefit of His people.

Paul later explains:

“But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.” — 1 Corinthians 14:3

There are three wonderful purposes:

EDIFICATION.

EXHORTATION.

COMFORT.

Its Purpose

To strengthen, encourage, exhort, and comfort God's people.

Its Intent

Not fortune-telling.

Not manipulating people's decisions with:

“God told me you have to...”

Not elevating someone's personality above Scripture.

Its Manifestation

Through Spirit-directed utterance that is consistent with God's revealed Word and subject to biblical testing.

Scripture instructs believers:

“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

EDIFICATION OF THE BODY AND GLORIFICATION OF CHRIST.

👁️ 7. DISCERNING OF SPIRITS

“...to another discerning of spirits...” — 1 Corinthians 12:10

This is particularly important in an age when almost anybody can say:

“God told me...”

What is it?

A Spirit-given ability to distinguish the spiritual source or character operating behind a manifestation, message, or circumstance.

Its Purpose

To protect the Church from spiritual deception.

Its Intent

To help distinguish what genuinely originates from God from what may originate elsewhere.

Its Manifestation

This gift may operate when discernment is necessary concerning spiritual manifestations, teaching, influence, or activity.

But be careful:

DISCERNMENT IS NOT SUSPICION.

Being cynical about everybody is not a spiritual gift.

Neither is judging people by appearance.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To protect God's people and keep the Church anchored in truth.

John instructed believers:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God...” — 1 John 4:1

🗣️ 8. DIVERS KINDS OF TONGUES

“...to another divers kinds of tongues...” — 1 Corinthians 12:10

What is it?

A Spirit-enabled utterance in a language not naturally acquired by the speaker.

Tongues appear in several New Testament contexts, and 1 Corinthians 12–14 provides important instructions concerning their operation within the gathered church.

Its Purpose

Within the corporate setting Paul discusses, tongues accompanied by interpretation can contribute to the edification of the Church.

Its Intent

Never confusion.

Never spiritual competition.

Never:

“I'm more spiritual than you because I speak in tongues.”

Paul repeatedly emphasizes order.

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace...” — 1 Corinthians 14:33

Its Manifestation

A Spirit-enabled utterance that, when exercised publicly in the manner Paul describes, should be accompanied by interpretation so the congregation can receive edification.

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

Like every other spiritual gift:

TO GLORIFY GOD AND EDIFY HIS PEOPLE.

📖 9. INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES

“...to another the interpretation of tongues.” — 1 Corinthians 12:10

What is it?

A Spirit-given ability to communicate the meaning of an utterance in tongues so that others may understand and be edified.

Interpretation is not necessarily the same thing as ordinary linguistic translation.

Its source, in Paul's description, is the Spirit.

Its Purpose

To make the public utterance understandable to the congregation.

Its Intent

God doesn't want the gathered Church merely impressed by a supernatural manifestation.

HE WANTS THE CHURCH EDIFIED.

Understanding matters.

Its Manifestation

Following a public utterance in tongues, the Spirit enables interpretation so that the message becomes intelligible to those present.

Paul explains:

“...except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.” — 1 Corinthians 14:5

Its Ultimate Purpose in the Believer

To turn supernatural utterance into understandable edification for the Body of Christ.

🔥 NINE GIFTS—ONE HOLY SPIRIT

This may be the most important part of the entire discussion.

The gifts are different.

THE SOURCE IS THE SAME.

Paul says:

“But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit...” — 1 Corinthians 12:11

Not nine Holy Spirits.

Not nine competing ministries.

Not nine opportunities to become famous.

ONE SPIRIT.

And immediately afterward Paul turns to the human body:

“For as the body is one, and hath many members... so also is Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 12:12

Why?

Because spiritual gifts were never intended to create spiritual celebrities.

They were intended to help the Body function.

🧩 YOU ARE PART OF A BODY

Your eye doesn't compete with your ear.

Your hand doesn't wake up angry because it isn't your foot.

Your heart doesn't demand recognition from your lungs.

Each part has a function.

Together they make one body.

Paul's point is unmistakable:

WE NEED EACH OTHER.

The believer through whom one gift operates is not superior to the believer through whom another operates.

The preacher isn't more valuable than the prayer warrior.

The person behind the pulpit isn't automatically more important than the person quietly serving where almost nobody notices.

Different functions.

One Body.

One Lord.

One Spirit.

⚠️ GIFTS WITHOUT LOVE CAN BECOME NOISE

And then comes something fascinating.

First Corinthians 12 leads directly into 1 Corinthians 13.

Why?

Because after discussing extraordinary spiritual gifts, Paul says:

“And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” — 1 Corinthians 12:31

Then:

LOVE.

You can speak.

Prophesy.

Understand mysteries.

Possess extraordinary faith.

And if love is absent—

Paul says we've missed something fundamental.

THE GIFTS NEVER REPLACE THE FRUIT.

A supernatural manifestation doesn't excuse an ungodly character.

Power without love is dangerous.

Gifting without humility is dangerous.

Ministry without holiness is dangerous.

🌳 GIFTS AND FRUIT ARE NOT THE SAME THING

Galatians 5 speaks of:

Love.

Joy.

Peace.

Longsuffering.

Gentleness.

Goodness.

Faith.

Meekness.

Temperance.

That's the fruit of the Spirit.

First Corinthians 12 describes the gifts of the Spirit.

We need to understand the distinction.

GIFTS SHOW WHAT THE SPIRIT CAN DO THROUGH YOU.

FRUIT SHOWS WHAT THE SPIRIT IS PRODUCING IN YOU.

We should desire both.

🙏 SHOULD CHRISTIANS DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS?

Paul answers that himself:

“Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts...” — 1 Corinthians 14:1

Yes.

But notice the order.

FOLLOW LOVE.

DESIRE GIFTS.

We shouldn't be afraid of what the Holy Spirit gives.

Neither should we manufacture what He hasn't given.

Our prayer should be:

“Holy Spirit, use me however You choose.”

Not:

“Make me impressive.”

Not:

“Give me the gift that gets the most attention.”

But:

“MAKE ME USEFUL.”

✝️ WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF ALL NINE?

We can summarize the entire matter with several truths.

The gifts are given to:

GLORIFY JESUS CHRIST.

EDIFY THE CHURCH.

MINISTER TO PEOPLE.

DEMONSTRATE GOD'S GRACE AND POWER.

ADVANCE THE GOSPEL.

STRENGTHEN THE BODY OF CHRIST.

EQUIP BELIEVERS FOR SERVICE.

And ultimately—

POINT PEOPLE TOWARD JESUS.

If a supposed manifestation makes the minister the center instead of Christ—

something is wrong.

If it produces chaos rather than biblical order—

examine it.

If it contradicts Scripture—

reject it.

If it manipulates people—

reject it.

If it produces pride—

something has gone terribly wrong.

THE HOLY SPIRIT GLORIFIES JESUS CHRIST.

🙏 LET US PRAY

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit.

Thank You that You have not left Your Church powerless, directionless, or alone.

Teach us to understand the gifts of the Spirit biblically.

Protect us from fear.

Protect us from unbelief.

But also protect us from deception, imitation, pride, manipulation, and abuse.

Give us wisdom.

Give us discernment.

Give us humility.

Holy Spirit, distribute Your gifts according to Your will.

If You give wisdom—

let it serve others.

If You give knowledge—

let it minister rather than impress.

If You give faith—

let it point toward Your power.

If You bring healing—

let Jesus receive the glory.

If You work miracles—

let people see Christ.

If You speak prophetically—

let the Church be edified, exhorted, and comforted.

If You give discernment—

let truth be protected.

If You give tongues—

let them operate according to Your Word.

If You give interpretation—

let Your people understand and be strengthened.

And above all—

GIVE US LOVE.

Never allow us to become more interested in spiritual gifts than in the Giver.

Never allow manifestations to become more important than Jesus.

Never allow power to outrun character.

Never allow gifts to replace holiness.

Use us.

Fill us.

Teach us.

Correct us.

And make us useful members of the Body of Christ.

🔥 NINE GIFTS. ONE SPIRIT. ONE BODY. ONE PURPOSE.

The Word of Wisdom.

The Word of Knowledge.

Faith.

Gifts of Healing.

Working of Miracles.

Prophecy.

Discerning of Spirits.

Divers Kinds of Tongues.

Interpretation of Tongues.

Different manifestations.

Different functions.

But—

THE SAME HOLY SPIRIT.

Christian, don't chase manifestations.

CHASE JESUS.

Don't seek recognition.

SEEK TO SERVE.

Don't ask:

“How can people see how gifted I am?”

Ask:

“HOLY SPIRIT, HOW CAN YOU USE ME TO HELP SOMEBODY?”

Because the ultimate evidence of God's Spirit working through us isn't that people walk away saying:

“What an amazing Christian!”

It is that they walk away saying:

“WHAT AN AMAZING GOD!”
