Five Stories Worth Watching This Week
Good morning, friends.
Another week is beginning, and once again the world isn't slowing down long enough for anyone to catch their breath.
Wars continue.
Families are being displaced.
Prices remain a concern.
The Philippines continues dealing with rain, flooding, infrastructure questions, and allegations of corruption.
And beginning this week, many of the world's leaders will gather in New York to talk about war, peace, climate, humanitarian crises, artificial intelligence, development, and the future of international cooperation.
There will be hundreds of headlines.
Some will dominate social media for a few hours and disappear.
Others deserve our attention because what happens next could affect millions of people.
So for this September 21 edition of NEWS YOU CAN USE, let's look beyond the noise at several stories worth keeping an eye on.
🇮🇱🇮🇷 1. THE MIDDLE EAST: WATCH THE WATER
One of the most consequential stories heading into the week isn't happening only on land.
It's happening at sea.
Iran said this week that it struck an oil tanker attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, while tensions involving Iran, the United States, Israel, Yemen's Houthis, Saudi Arabia and regional shipping continue to raise concerns about a broader conflict. The Associated Press noted that it could not independently verify Iran's account of the tanker incident.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia reported a Houthi missile attack directed toward Riyadh, marking another escalation in the fighting involving Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
Why should somebody thousands of miles away care?
Oil. Shipping. Trade.
The Strait of Hormuz and the waterways surrounding the Arabian Peninsula are among the world's strategically important shipping corridors.
When those waters become unstable, the consequences don't necessarily remain in the Middle East.
Energy markets can react.
Shipping costs can rise.
Insurance costs can rise.
Supply chains can be disrupted.
And eventually some of those additional costs can reach ordinary consumers.
👀 WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK
Watch for further attacks on commercial shipping, changes in maritime security, additional Saudi-Houthi exchanges, and any diplomatic movement aimed at preventing another expansion of the conflict.
And above all:
Pray for peace.
Behind every map showing military movements are mothers, fathers, children, soldiers, sailors, refugees, and ordinary people who simply want to live.
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
🇵🇭 2. THE PHILIPPINES: THE RAIN KEEPS FALLING—AND QUESTIONS KEEP RISING
For those of us with family, friends, ministry work, or other connections in the Philippines, this story deserves continued attention.
The southwest monsoon—habagat—continues affecting portions of the country.
PAGASA reported that Western Visayas, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and Palawan could experience scattered rain and thunderstorms, with the possibility of flash floods or landslides during moderate to heavy rainfall. The weather agency was also monitoring systems outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
The effects of earlier flooding are still being felt. On September 18, the European Union announced ₱10.9 million in humanitarian assistance for Philippine communities affected by recent monsoon flooding in Luzon.
But weather is only half of this story.
Questions surrounding Philippine flood-control spending continue as well.
The Commission on Audit has been conducting fraud audits involving nearly 50 flood-control projects, while investigations have expanded into allegations that government money intended for infrastructure was misused.
Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez pleaded not guilty on September 16 to plunder charges involving alleged kickbacks connected to flood-control and other government projects. The accusations remain allegations being adjudicated in court, and defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Anti-corruption demonstrations are also planned around September 21, adding another reason to watch developments closely.
👀 WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK
Watch the weather.
Watch flood conditions.
Watch transportation disruptions.
But also watch what happens with investigations into infrastructure spending.
This isn't merely political theater.
When money intended for drainage, roads, bridges, flood barriers, and disaster protection is allegedly misused, the potential consequences can become painfully tangible when the rain starts falling.
For ministries such as ours, the human side matters most.
When roads flood, ministry becomes harder.
When food prices rise, struggling families suffer first.
When transportation stops, workers cannot work.
When homes flood, children suffer alongside their parents.
Please continue praying for the Philippines.
💵 3. AMERICA'S ECONOMY: INFLATION ISN'T FINISHED YET
For American households wondering why everyday expenses still feel heavy, the Federal Reserve sent an important signal this week.
On September 16, the Federal Open Market Committee raised its target federal-funds rate by one-quarter percentage point to 3.75%–4.00%.
The Fed said economic activity was expanding at a solid pace and domestic spending remained resilient, but it also said plainly:
“Inflation remains elevated.”
That matters.
Interest rates influence borrowing throughout the economy.
Mortgages.
Credit cards.
Auto loans.
Business borrowing.
Investment decisions.
And ultimately household finances.
The Fed's action indicates that policymakers remain concerned enough about inflation to keep applying monetary restraint even while describing the broader economy as relatively strong.
👀 WHAT TO WATCH
Don't watch only Wall Street.
Watch your kitchen table.
Groceries.
Gasoline.
Utilities.
Insurance.
Housing.
Credit-card interest.
Transportation.
Healthcare.
Those are the numbers families actually feel.
Economic statistics can say one thing while a family trying to stretch $100 through another week experiences something entirely different.
This is also why we continually remind our ministry family:
Never become so focused on statistics that you stop seeing people.
There are people around you quietly struggling.
Maybe this is the week God places one of them upon your heart.
🌎 4. WORLD LEADERS ARE GATHERING—PAY ATTENTION
This week, New York becomes one of the most important diplomatic stages in the world.
The 81st United Nations General Assembly is underway, with its general debate scheduled for September 22–28. The UN says leaders will address interconnected global challenges under the theme:
“Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Among the issues expected to receive significant attention are the Middle East conflicts, Ukraine, Sudan, artificial intelligence, climate pressures, international development, and global cooperation.
Several major meetings are scheduled during the week as well, including discussions concerning climate action, sea-level rise, and pandemic preparedness.
Now understand something.
Speeches do not automatically produce peace.
Conferences don't automatically stop wars.
Declarations don't automatically feed hungry children.
But diplomacy matters because conversations between governments can influence sanctions, humanitarian assistance, military policy, trade, international cooperation, and sometimes whether conflicts escalate or cool.
👀 WHAT TO WATCH
Don't merely listen to the speeches.
Watch what happens after the speeches.
Watch for:
Diplomatic meetings.
Humanitarian commitments.
Negotiations.
Agreements.
Disagreements.
Coalitions.
Sanctions.
Peace initiatives.
Sometimes the most consequential development doesn't happen behind the podium.
It happens behind closed doors afterward.
And Scripture gives Christians another responsibility:
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions... be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority...” — 1 Timothy 2:1–2
Regardless of our politics, we can pray for wisdom among leaders.
💔 5. DON'T LET YEMEN BECOME THE STORY EVERYBODY FORGETS
This may be the story most easily overshadowed by everything else happening.
Please don't overlook it.
Renewed fighting in Yemen has created another surge of displacement.
The International Organization for Migration reported that at least 112,000 people had been displaced inside Yemen within roughly two weeks, while nearly 3,000 people had fled across the Gulf of Aden toward Djibouti as the violence intensified.
The United Nations has also warned that humanitarian needs are rapidly increasing.
Think beyond those numbers.
112,000 isn't merely a statistic.
Those are people.
Imagine suddenly gathering whatever you can carry.
Leaving your home.
Taking your children.
Not knowing where you're sleeping tomorrow.
Not knowing where your next meal is coming from.
Not knowing whether you'll ever return home.
That is what displacement means.
👀 WHAT TO WATCH
Watch whether the conflict expands.
Watch whether displacement continues increasing.
Watch whether humanitarian organizations can safely reach affected communities.
And please remember Yemen in prayer.

There is something Christians must guard against.
Headline fatigue.
After enough wars...
Enough disasters...
Enough corruption...
Enough violence...
Enough political arguments...
Enough suffering...
We can become numb.
Another hundred thousand displaced?
Scroll.
Another flood?
Scroll.
Another war?
Scroll.
Another hungry child?
Scroll.
But Christians cannot afford to lose compassion.
Jesus didn't look at hurting people as statistics.
“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them...” — Matthew 9:36
Perhaps that's the challenge for this week's News You Can Use.
DON'T JUST WATCH THE NEWS.
Pray over it.
When you see war—pray for peace.
When you see hunger—ask how you can help.
When you see corruption—pray for truth and justice.
When you see families displaced—remember they are somebody's family.
When you see leaders gathering—pray for wisdom.
When you see suffering—
don't allow your heart to become so accustomed to it that you stop caring.
🔥 FIVE THINGS TO KEEP YOUR EYE ON THIS WEEK
1. Middle East escalation and the security of major shipping routes.
2. Philippine weather, flooding, and the continuing flood-control investigations.
3. Inflation, interest rates, and what they mean for household finances.
4. The UN General Assembly and diplomatic developments surrounding major global conflicts.
5. The rapidly worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen and elsewhere.
These aren't necessarily the only important stories.
They are stories we believe deserve continued attention because they aren't likely to disappear when today's news cycle ends.

Heavenly Father,
Our world desperately needs You.
We pray for people caught in wars they did not start.
We pray for families who have lost homes to floods and disasters.
We pray for those struggling to put food on their tables.
We pray for refugees and displaced families who don't know where they will sleep tonight.
We pray for the Philippines.
We pray for America.
We pray for Israel and the Palestinian people.
We pray for Iran.
We pray for Yemen.
We pray for Ukraine and Russia.
We pray for Sudan.
We pray for every nation where people are suffering while much of the world barely notices.
And as world leaders gather this week, give them wisdom.
Where there is hatred, bring reconciliation.
Where there is corruption, expose truth.
Where there is hunger, send provision.
Where there is fear, bring peace.
And Lord—
don't allow us merely to become better informed.
Make us more compassionate.
Show us where we can pray.
Show us where we can serve.
Show us where we can give.
Show us where we can speak.
And show us where we simply need to be still and trust You.
