LABOR DAY 2026: GOD SEES THE HANDS THAT KEEP GOING

Honoring the Workers, Remembering the Weary, and Giving Thanks to God

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” — Colossians 3:23

Tomorrow, Monday, September 7, 2026, America observes Labor Day.

For many, it will mean a day away from work. There will be cookouts, family gatherings, sales, traveling, sporting events, and perhaps a few extra hours of sleep.

But before the celebrations begin, perhaps we should remember what this day represents:

People.

People who get up every morning and go to work.

People who build our homes, teach our children, care for our sick, grow our food, drive our trucks, repair our roads, defend our nation, stock our shelves, deliver our packages, answer emergency calls, clean our buildings, operate our businesses, manufacture our goods, and perform thousands of other jobs that keep our communities and nation moving.

Today, Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International simply wants to say:

THANK YOU.

GOD SEES THE WORK NOBODY ELSE SEES

Some labor is performed beneath bright lights and receives recognition.

Much of it does not.

There is a mother who will finish her shift and go home to begin another one caring for her family.

There is a father working overtime because the bills don't stop coming.

There is a nurse whose feet hurt but who still walks into another patient's room with compassion.

There is a teacher spending personal money on classroom supplies.

There is a truck driver hundreds of miles from home.

There is a farmer whose work begins before many of us awaken.

There is a military member standing watch while others celebrate.

There are police officers, firefighters, EMTs, sanitation workers, caregivers, mechanics, construction workers, factory workers, restaurant employees, retail workers, office workers, delivery drivers, and countless others doing jobs we sometimes notice only when they are not done.

God sees every one of them.

AND THEN THERE ARE THOSE LOOKING FOR WORK

On this Labor Day, we must also remember the person who desperately wishes they had a job to go to.

Someone has filled out application after application.

Someone has heard, “We'll call you,” but the telephone remains silent.

Someone lost a job they thought would carry them into retirement.

Someone is wondering how they will pay the rent, mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, or medical expenses.

If that is you, please hear this:

Your employment status does not determine your worth.

Your paycheck does not determine your value.

Your title does not determine your importance.

God does.

You are more than what you produce.

You are a soul created by Almighty God.

TO THE PERSON WHO IS SIMPLY TIRED

Perhaps this Labor Day finds you exhausted.

Not vacation tired.

Life tired.

Tired of stretching the paycheck.

Tired of watching prices rise.

Tired of worrying about tomorrow.

Tired of working harder but feeling as though you are falling farther behind.

Tired of carrying responsibilities that few people know about.

Tired of being the person everyone depends upon.

Jesus spoke directly to people carrying that kind of weight:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Notice what Jesus did not say.

He did not say, “Get yourself together first.”

He did not say, “Come when everything is fixed.”

He simply said:

COME.

YOUR JOB IS WHAT YOU DO—IT IS NOT WHO YOU ARE

There is something else worth remembering this Labor Day.

We live in a world that frequently asks:

“What do you do?”

God is concerned with something much deeper:

“Who are you becoming?”

Careers end.

Companies close.

Positions change.

Businesses rise and fall.

Retirement eventually comes.

But your relationship with Jesus Christ reaches beyond the workplace, beyond retirement, beyond this life, and into eternity.

Work hard.

Do your best.

Provide for your family.

Serve with integrity.

Be dependable.

Give your employer an honest day's work.

Treat your employees fairly.

But never become so busy making a living that you forget why God gave you life.

SOME OF THE GREATEST LABOR WILL NEVER APPEAR ON A PAYCHECK

Let us also honor those whose labor cannot always be measured in dollars.

The grandmother raising grandchildren.

The husband caring for a sick wife.

The wife caring for an aging husband.

The parent caring for a child with special needs.

The volunteer feeding hungry families.

The missionary serving thousands of miles from home.

The pastor answering a telephone late at night because someone has reached the end of their rope.

The neighbor checking on an elderly person.

The believer quietly praying for people who may never know their name.

Heaven keeps records differently than we do.

God sees it all.

JESUS UNDERSTANDS LABOR

Never forget that our Savior knew what it meant to work.

Before crowds followed Him...

Before miracles filled the countryside...

Before Calvary...

Jesus knew ordinary human labor.

He knew sweat.

He knew tired hands.

He knew long days.

And ultimately, He performed the greatest work ever accomplished when He went to Calvary and gave His life for the sins of humanity.

On the cross Jesus declared:

“It is finished.” — John 19:30

The greatest work in history had been accomplished.

Salvation had been purchased.

The price had been paid.

SO THIS LABOR DAY...

Enjoy your family.

Fire up the grill.

Rest if you can.

Laugh.

Call someone you love.

Thank a worker.

Encourage someone looking for employment.

Check on somebody who is struggling.

Pray for those who must work while others are enjoying the holiday.

And somewhere during the day, stop and thank God for the strength, ability, health, knowledge, opportunity, and grace that have allowed you to labor.

Because ultimately:

The job may provide the paycheck—but God provides the strength to earn it.

A LABOR DAY PRAYER

Father,

Thank You for every worker.

Thank You for the hands that build, repair, teach, protect, heal, serve, transport, clean, create, plant, harvest, lead, and care.

Bless those who must work this Labor Day.

Strengthen those who are exhausted.

Provide employment for those searching for work.

Comfort families struggling financially.

Protect those working dangerous jobs.

Watch over our military members and first responders.

Give wisdom to employers and leaders.

Help us never take the labor of another person for granted.

And Lord, when the burdens of life become too heavy, remind us that Jesus still says:

“Come unto Me.”

May every tired heart find rest in Him.

May every discouraged worker find renewed strength.

May every struggling family experience Your provision.

And may everything we do ultimately bring honor and glory to You.
