⏳ IS YOUR ETERNITY WORTH INVESTIGATING?
One Day It Won't Be a Philosophical Question Anymore
There is at least one thing the atheist and I can agree on.
One day—
WE ARE GOING TO DIE.
Christian.
Atheist.
Agnostic.
Muslim.
Hindu.
Buddhist.
Religious.
Irreligious.
Rich.
Poor.
Educated.
Uneducated.
Famous.
Unknown.
Death doesn't ask what you believe before making its appointment.
The debate isn't really over whether we die.
The debate is:
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
And considering what may be at stake, I have a question for you:
IS YOUR ETERNITY WORTH INVESTIGATING?
🤔 “I DON'T REALLY THINK ABOUT THAT.”
I understand.
Life keeps us busy.
You wake up.
Go to work.
Pay bills.
Raise children.
Buy groceries.
Make appointments.
Watch television.
Scroll through social media.
Plan vacations.
Save for retirement.
Worry about tomorrow.
Celebrate birthdays.
Attend weddings.
Build careers.
Buy homes.
And somehow, while doing all of this living, it becomes incredibly easy to forget that this life has an expiration date.
We plan twenty and thirty years into the future while knowing absolutely nothing about tomorrow.
James wrote:
“For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” — James 4:14
A vapor.
Think about that.
Here—
and then gone.
⏰ IT DOESN'T MATTER—UNTIL IT DOES
For many people, eternity simply isn't important.
Not today.
There are more pressing matters.
Work tomorrow.
The mortgage.
Politics.
Sports.
Relationships.
Money.
Retirement.
The next promotion.
The next vacation.
The next purchase.
The next problem.
The next pleasure.
But eternity has an unusual characteristic:
IT CAN BE IGNORED—BUT IT CANNOT BE AVOIDED.
You can refuse to think about death.
That doesn't make you immortal.
You can reject Christianity.
That doesn't settle whether Christianity is true.
You can reject atheism.
That doesn't automatically prove Christianity.
You can ignore every religion on Earth.
That doesn't answer the question.
And that's precisely why I am asking you to investigate.
Don't believe something merely because your parents believed it.
Don't reject something merely because somebody offended you in church.
Don't build your eternity upon an internet meme.
Don't assume that because you've encountered hypocritical Christians, Jesus Christ must therefore be false.
And don't accept what I say merely because I'm a preacher.
INVESTIGATE IT FOR YOURSELF.
🔍 WHAT IF YOU'RE WRONG?
That question applies to me too.
If Christianity makes claims about eternity, those claims deserve examination.
If someone claims there is no God, that deserves examination.
If someone says consciousness simply ends at death, ask what supports that conclusion.
If someone claims all religions ultimately lead to the same destination, investigate that claim too.
These aren't trivial questions.
We're not discussing which restaurant serves the best hamburger.
We're discussing the ultimate questions of human existence:
Why am I here?
Does God exist?
Who is Jesus Christ?
Why is there evil?
What is sin?
Can I be forgiven?
Does my life have objective meaning?
Is there judgment?
Is there Heaven?
Is there Hell?
What happens when I die?
Surely those questions deserve more than:
“I never really thought about it.”
✋ I WISH I COULD SHAKE YOU
I mean that figuratively, of course.
But sometimes I wish I could somehow awaken people to how finite, temporary, and fragile this earthly life really is.
We invest enormous amounts of energy into things that won't accompany us beyond the grave.
The house stays here.
The car stays here.
The bank account stays here.
The retirement portfolio stays here.
The trophies stay here.
The degrees stay here.
The clothes stay here.
The followers stay here.
The titles stay here.
The business stays here.
Even the body we spent so much time maintaining eventually returns to the earth.
Jesus asked one of the most penetrating questions ever spoken:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36
Imagine gaining everything—
and discovering that you neglected the one thing that mattered eternally.
🌎 WE LIVE AS THOUGH THIS IS ALL THERE IS
Human beings have an extraordinary ability to become consumed with the immediate.
Someone insults us.
It ruins our day.
Someone gets promoted ahead of us.
We're angry for months.
Someone has a nicer house.
We become jealous.
Someone disagrees with us politically.
We behave as though civilization is ending.
Someone gets more likes, followers, recognition, or attention.
We feel insignificant.
But place those things beside eternity.
How large do they look now?
A hundred years from today, how much of what consumed your thoughts this morning will matter?
A thousand years from now?
Ten thousand?
A million?
ETERNITY HAS NO FINISH LINE.
That ought to change our perspective.
✝️ THEN THERE IS JESUS CHRIST
Eventually, your investigation must deal with Him.
Jesus isn't someone you can reasonably reduce to a motivational speaker who told people to love each other.
He made extraordinary claims.
He said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6
That's an enormous claim.
Jesus also said:
“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” — John 11:25
Again—
an extraordinary claim.
So investigate Him.
Read the Gospels.
Read Matthew.
Read Mark.
Read Luke.
Read John.
Examine the crucifixion.
Examine the claims surrounding His resurrection.
Ask why His earliest followers proclaimed a risen Christ despite persecution and suffering.
Ask what Christianity actually teaches rather than what someone told you Christians believe.
FOLLOW THE EVIDENCE WHEREVER YOU BELIEVE IT LEADS.
But investigate.
❤️ GOD WILL NOT FORCE YOU
This may be one of the hardest parts for someone who desperately wants another person to believe.
I cannot make you choose Christ.
Your parents cannot.
Your spouse cannot.
Your pastor cannot.
Your friends cannot.
God has given human beings the capacity to choose, and choices carry consequences.
I can preach.
I can write.
I can plead.
I can pray.
I can tell you what I believe.
I can point you toward Scripture.
But eventually—
YOU MUST DECIDE.
That decision belongs to you.
And I respect that.
But please don't confuse having the freedom to choose with every choice necessarily having the same consequence.
⚰️ “I'LL THINK ABOUT IT LATER.”
Perhaps.
But how much later?
That isn't meant to frighten you.
It's reality.
Cemeteries are filled with people who had plans for tomorrow.
Death doesn't occur only when we're 95 years old, surrounded by family, having completed everything on our bucket list.
Life is fragile.
We know that.
We simply don't like thinking about it.
Hebrews 9:27 says:
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
If Scripture is correct, death isn't the end of your existence.
And that makes investigating eternity infinitely more important than investigating almost anything else you'll ever consider.
🚪 CHRISTIANITY DOESN'T BEGIN WITH “BE A BETTER PERSON”
This is important.
The Gospel isn't:
Try harder.
Become religious.
Join my denomination.
Pretend you're perfect.
Clean yourself up before coming to God.
The Gospel begins with something far more humbling:
WE NEED A SAVIOR.
Romans 3:23 says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
That includes me.
It includes every preacher.
Every missionary.
Every church member.
Every atheist.
Every skeptic.
Everybody.
But Scripture doesn't stop there.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
That's the heart of Christianity.
Not humanity climbing high enough to reach God.
GOD REACHING DOWN TO SAVE HUMANITY.
🙏 MAYBE YOU'RE READING THIS AND YOU DON'T BELIEVE ANY OF IT
Then I have a request.
Don't get angry.
Don't click away simply because you disagree.
Investigate.
If Christianity is false, truth has nothing to fear from your investigation.
And if Christianity is true—
then there may be nothing more important you will ever investigate.
Ask questions.
Challenge assumptions.
Read Scripture.
Study history.
Examine competing explanations.
Talk with knowledgeable believers.
Talk with knowledgeable skeptics.
Think.
Pray—even if your prayer initially sounds like:
“God, I don't even know whether You're there. But if You are, help me know the truth.”
Don't fake belief.
SEEK TRUTH.
🕊️ AND TO THE CHRISTIAN READING THIS...
We need this reminder too.
We can become so busy with earthly life that we begin living as though eternity doesn't matter.
Church activities can even replace intimacy with Christ.
We argue over things that won't matter in eternity.
We chase possessions we cannot keep.
We hold grudges against people who could be gone tomorrow.
We postpone telling someone we love them.
We postpone forgiving.
We postpone witnessing.
We postpone obeying God.
Christian—
YOU ARE NOT HOME YET.
Live accordingly.
⏳ ONE DAY, THE QUESTION BECOMES AN ANSWER
Today you can debate eternity.
One day, according to Christian belief, you will experience the answer.
Today you can investigate Jesus.
Today you can open a Bible.
Today you can ask questions.
Today you can reconsider assumptions.
Today you can repent.
Today you can believe.
Today you can receive Christ.
That's why Scripture says:
“...behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” — 2 Corinthians 6:2
Not because God is trying to frighten you.
BECAUSE LIFE IS SHORT—AND ETERNITY ISN'T.
🙏 LET US PRAY
Heavenly Father,
Somebody reading this may believe completely.
Somebody may be uncertain.
Somebody may be angry with You.
Somebody may have been wounded by religion.
Somebody may call themselves an atheist.
Somebody may simply not care.
I cannot change their heart, and I cannot make their decision for them.
So I ask You to help each of us seek truth sincerely.
Strip away pride, fear, religious performance, assumptions, bitterness, and distractions.
Help us understand how brief this life truly is.
Help us stop treating temporary things as though they were eternal and eternal things as though they were unimportant.
And above all, reveal Jesus Christ.
To the searching—give light.
To the doubting—give understanding.
To the hurting—give comfort.
To the wandering—call them home.
To the believer—renew our urgency.
And to every one of us, remind us:
Life is temporary.
ETERNITY IS NOT.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
❓ SO I'LL ASK YOU ONE MORE TIME
Not as a preacher trying to win an argument.
Not as someone trying to force religion upon you.
But as one human being speaking to another human being who, like me, will someday die:
IS YOUR ETERNITY WORTH INVESTIGATING?
You investigate houses before buying them.
You investigate investments before risking your money.
You investigate doctors before trusting them with your health.
You investigate careers that may occupy forty years of your life.
Then surely—
ETERNITY DESERVES AN INVESTIGATION.
You don't have to accept my conclusion because I said it.
Open the Bible.
Examine Jesus Christ.
Ask the difficult questions.
Seek truth.
And make your own decision.
But please—
DON'T SPEND YOUR ENTIRE LIFE PREPARING FOR EVERYTHING EXCEPT WHAT COMES AFTER IT.
“For what is your life? It is even a vapour...” — James 4:14
