GIVING TUESDAY: WHAT $20 MEANS HERE MAY MEAN SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT THERE
Before You Decide That Your Gift Is Too Small to Matter, Consider What It Can Mean to Someone Living on a Fraction of What Many Americans Earn

There is something I wish more Americans could see firsthand.
When we look at countries outside the United States—particularly developing nations—we sometimes look at their financial needs through American eyes.
We hear $5.
$10.
$20.
$50.
And because those amounts may not purchase very much in America anymore, we can unconsciously assume:
“What difference could my little donation possibly make?”
Come with us to the Philippines for a moment.
Not as a tourist.
Not to the resort.
Not to the hotel.
Not to the shopping mall.
Come with us into the communities.
Come meet the families.
Come meet the children.
Come sit inside a home where people are trying to stretch a small income across food, electricity, transportation, school expenses, medicine, clothing, and everything else life requires.
Suddenly, $20 looks different.
THE NUMBERS TELL PART OF THE STORY
According to the latest published Occupational Wages Survey from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the average monthly wage among covered full-time, time-rated workers was approximately:
₱21,544 per month
That figure comes from the 2024 Occupational Wages Survey and applies to formal establishments employing ten or more workers. It is an average, meaning countless Filipinos earn considerably less.
Consider another figure from that same survey:
Workers in elementary occupations averaged only:
₱13,506 per month.
Agriculture, forestry, and fishing—the lowest-paid industry group in the survey—averaged:
₱14,615 per month.
And wages differ dramatically depending upon where someone lives and works.
The Philippines does not operate under one universal nationwide minimum wage. Minimum wages are established regionally. Current rates range substantially across the country; even within particular regions, rates can vary according to sector and other classifications.
Those aren't simply statistics.
Those numbers represent people.
Mothers.
Fathers.
Grandparents.
Young adults.
Students.
Families.
People trying to make tomorrow work with what they earned today.
NOW LOOK AT YOUR $20 AGAIN
This is where perspective matters.
Twenty dollars in America can disappear quickly.
A meal.
A few groceries.
Gasoline.
Coffee and breakfast for two.
Something ordered online that we may barely remember purchasing a month later.
But when your gift travels into a developing community through responsible ministry outreach, its purchasing power and potential impact can look very different.
That same gift can become part of:
🍚 Food for a struggling family.
📖 Bibles and Christian materials.
🎒 School supplies for children.
👕 Clothing and necessities.
💊 Medicine and basic health assistance.
🚐 Transportation needed to reach another community.
🏠 Assistance for a family facing an emergency.
⛪ Resources for evangelism and church outreach.
🙏 Another opportunity to put the love of Jesus Christ into action.
Does $20 solve poverty?
Of course not.
But that was never the question.
Can $20 help somebody today?
Absolutely.
WE DON'T WANT TO MINISTER TO JUST PART OF A PERSON
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International has never believed that ministry should consist merely of preaching a sermon and walking away.
Jesus ministered to people.
Whole people.
People with souls who needed salvation.
People with bodies that became hungry.
People with minds that needed truth.
People with hearts that were broken.
People carrying burdens.
People needing compassion.
That is why our desire is to minister to the:
MIND.
BODY.
SOUL.
SPIRIT.
We will preach Jesus Christ.
We will teach the Word of God.
We will pray.
We will evangelize.
But when someone sitting in front of us is hungry, we also want to help feed them.
When a child needs assistance with school, we want to help.
When someone needs basic medical or dental assistance, we want to respond.
When disaster strikes a community, we want to be there.
When a family desperately needs encouragement, we want to sit beside them.
Because sometimes before someone hears your sermon...
they need to know that you care.
THIS IS WHY WE ARE IN THE PHILIPPINES
We did not go halfway around the world simply to say:
“God bless you.”
We went to become available to God.
We went to preach.
We went to teach.
We went to serve.
We went to help.
We went because there are people Jesus Christ died for who need someone willing to go.
Our mission remains simple:
ONE MORE.
One more child.
One more teenager.
One more struggling mother.
One more father trying to provide for his family.
One more village.
One more Bible.
One more prayer.
One more meal.
One more opportunity to tell somebody:
“Jesus loves you, and you have not been forgotten.”
YOUR GIFT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE LARGE TO BE USEFUL
Sometimes people don't give because they are embarrassed by what they can afford.
Please don't be.
If $5 is what God places upon your heart, don't apologize for $5.
If it is $10, don't compare your $10 to someone else's $100.
If it is $20, give it joyfully.
If God has blessed you to give $100, $500, $1,000, or considerably more, then ask Him how He would have you steward what He has entrusted to you.
Paul reminds us:
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7
God is not impressed by zeros.
God looks at hearts.
Remember the widow and her two mites.
Jesus noticed her.
Others may have seen almost nothing.
Jesus saw sacrifice.
AMERICA, THIS IS SOMETHING WE NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND
When you support ministry in developing nations, don't automatically measure the value of your contribution by what that same amount would purchase in the United States.
Your dollars can travel.
Your compassion can travel.
Your prayers can travel.
Your faith can travel.
And through missionaries and ministries working on the ground...
YOUR LOVE CAN TRAVEL.
You may never meet the child your generosity helps.
You may never sit at the table of the family that receives food.
You may never see the face of the person who receives a Bible.
You may never hear the prayer of the mother who desperately needed help.
You may never walk through the community your giving helps us reach.
But God sees every one of them.
And He sees you.
WE NEED MORE THAN YOUR MONEY
Please understand this.
We need your prayers.
We need your faith.
We need believers who will stand with us spiritually.
We need people who will pray for protection, provision, wisdom, open doors, strength, workers, resources, and souls.
And yes...
We need your financial support.
Mission work costs money.
Transportation costs money.
Food costs money.
Outreach costs money.
Buildings cost money.
Educational assistance costs money.
Medical and dental outreach costs money.
Disaster assistance costs money.
Bibles cost money.
Getting the Gospel from where we are to where someone desperately needs to hear it costs money.
But the reason behind every dollar is never simply a project.
It is people.
WHAT COULD WE DO TOGETHER?
With your prayers...
we can pray harder.
With your faith...
we can believe bigger.
With your generosity...
we can reach farther.
Together...
we can feed more.
Help more.
Teach more.
Serve more.
Go farther.
And perhaps today...
TOUCH ONE MORE PERSON FOR JESUS CHRIST.
That one person matters.
That one family matters.
That one child matters.
That one soul matters.
Jesus said:
“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” — Matthew 25:40
THIS GIVING TUESDAY, LOOK AT YOUR GIFT DIFFERENTLY
Don't ask:
“Is my gift big enough?”
Ask:
“Lord, what can You do with what I place in Your hands?”
A little becomes much when God is in it.
Your $5 matters.
Your $10 matters.
Your $20 matters.
Your $50 matters.
Your $100 matters.
Your prayers matter.
Your sharing this message matters.
Your telling somebody else about the ministry matters.
Because ministry is not ultimately measured in dollars.
It is measured in lives.
