📖 BUT HOW CAN I KNOW IF WHAT MY CHURCH TEACHES IS WRONG?
When the Pulpit Says One Thing, Tradition Says Another, and God's Word Must Have the Final Say
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105
It is a question more Christians ought to ask:
“BUT HOW CAN I KNOW IF WHAT MY CHURCH TEACHES IS WRONG?”
That's a fair question.
After all, most people don't attend church expecting to be taught error.
We assume the pastor has studied.
We assume the denomination knows what it believes.
We assume the Sunday School teacher understands Scripture.
We assume the doctrine printed in the church literature has been thoroughly examined.
And if we've attended the same church for years—or perhaps our parents and grandparents attended there before us—we can easily begin believing:
“THIS MUST BE RIGHT. THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED.”
But there's a problem.
Churches can be wrong.
Pastors can be wrong.
Denominations can be wrong.
Traditions can be wrong.
Christian authors can be wrong.
Television preachers can be wrong.
Social-media ministers can be wrong.
And yes—
I CAN BE WRONG.
There is only one standard that possesses the authority to correct every one of us:
THE WORD OF GOD.
🔦 GOD GAVE US A LAMP FOR A REASON
David said:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Think about what a lamp does.
It exposes what darkness conceals.
It shows where you're standing.
It reveals what is immediately ahead.
It helps distinguish the right path from the wrong one.
And it can show you that the direction you've been traveling isn't where you thought it was leading.
THAT IS WHAT GOD'S WORD DOES.
The Bible isn't merely something to carry to church.
It isn't decoration for the coffee table.
It isn't a collection of inspirational quotations to consult when life becomes difficult.
God has given His Word to reveal Himself, expose sin, proclaim salvation, teach truth, correct error, train us in righteousness, and establish our steps.
Paul wrote:
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16
Notice those words:
Doctrine.
Reproof.
Correction.
Instruction.
God knew we would need all four.
⚠️ YOUR CHURCH DOESN'T GET TO CORRECT THE BIBLE
This is where the order matters.
We don't interpret Scripture according to what our church has already decided must be true.
WE EXAMINE WHAT OUR CHURCH TEACHES BY SCRIPTURE.
The Bible is not on trial.
Our doctrine is.
Our traditions are.
Our sermons are.
Our beliefs are.
Our practices are.
If Scripture contradicts something I have believed for 40 years, the solution isn't to find a way around Scripture.
I NEED TO CHANGE WHAT I BELIEVE.
If God's Word contradicts something I preach, I don't have authority to correct God's Word.
God's Word corrects me.
🧭 “BUT MY PASTOR SAID...”
Your pastor may be a wonderful man of God.
Love him.
Respect him.
Pray for him.
Support him as he faithfully serves Christ.
But never place your pastor in a position Scripture never gave him.
YOUR PASTOR IS NOT INFALLIBLE.
Neither am I.
No pastor is.
Paul was one of the greatest servants of God in Christian history, yet something remarkable happened when he preached in Berea.
Acts 17:11 tells us the Bereans:
“received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
Did you catch that?
THEY CHECKED PAUL.
They didn't reject him.
They didn't disrespect him.
They listened eagerly.
But then they opened the Scriptures and asked:
“IS WHAT WE JUST HEARD TRUE?”
And the Bible calls them noble for doing it.
That's healthy Christianity.
📖 BRING YOUR BIBLE TO CHURCH—AND USE IT
Don't merely listen to sermons.
FOLLOW THEM.
When Scripture is quoted, read it.
Look at what comes before it.
Look at what follows it.
Ask whether the preacher is explaining what the passage actually says—or merely borrowing a verse to support something he already wanted to say.
Context matters.
One verse removed from its context can be made to appear to support almost anything.
Ask:
Who is speaking?
To whom?
What is happening?
Why was this written?
What does the surrounding passage say?
Does this interpretation agree with the rest of Scripture?
That isn't rebellion.
THAT'S DISCIPLESHIP.
🚨 “THE BIBLE SAYS IT” DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN THE BIBLE TEACHES IT
That statement may surprise somebody.
A preacher can quote an actual Bible verse and still teach something the Bible doesn't teach.
Satan quoted Scripture to Jesus.
See Matthew 4:6.
The words he quoted were biblical.
THE WAY HE WAS USING THEM WAS NOT.
That's why hearing a preacher say:
“The Bible says...”
shouldn't automatically end your examination.
Find the passage.
Read it yourself.
Study the context.
Compare Scripture with Scripture.
Ask the Holy Spirit for understanding.
🏛️ WHAT ABOUT CHURCH TRADITION?
Tradition isn't automatically bad.
Some traditions are beautiful.
Some connect generations of believers.
Some help churches maintain order, reverence, identity, and continuity.
The problem comes when tradition is elevated to the same authority as—or greater authority than—God's Word.
Jesus confronted exactly that problem.
He said:
“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition...” — Mark 7:13
That should make every church examine itself.
“WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT THIS WAY” IS NOT A BIBLE VERSE.
Something can be old and wrong.
Something can be traditional and unbiblical.
Something can have been taught for generations and still fail the test of Scripture.
Age doesn't determine truth.
GOD'S WORD DOES.
⛪ WHAT ABOUT DENOMINATIONS?
There are faithful Christians in many denominations and church traditions.
There are also significant doctrinal disagreements among them.
One denomination teaches one thing.
Another teaches something different.
Both may quote Scripture.
So what should you do?
Don't simply ask:
“Which denomination sounds right?”
Ask:
“WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE ACTUALLY TEACH?”
Your loyalty must ultimately belong to Jesus Christ and His Word—not to a denominational label.
If your denomination agrees with Scripture—
wonderful.
If it doesn't—
SCRIPTURE WINS.
Every time.
🧠 GOD NEVER COMMANDED YOU TO TURN OFF YOUR MIND
Some Christians have been conditioned to believe questioning teaching demonstrates a rebellious spirit.
It certainly can.
Someone can become argumentative, proud, suspicious, and impossible to teach.
That's not what I'm advocating.
I'm talking about biblical discernment.
The Bible repeatedly tells believers to examine what they hear.
Paul wrote:
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21
John wrote:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God...” — 1 John 4:1
God isn't frightened by your questions.
Truth can withstand examination.
TEST WHAT YOU HEAR.
Then hold tightly to what is true.
🔍 HOW DO I TEST A TEACHING?
Begin with Scripture.
Not feelings.
Not popularity.
Not personalities.
Not church size.
Not how many books the preacher has sold.
Not television ratings.
Not social-media followers.
Not whether everybody shouted “Amen!”
Ask whether the teaching agrees with the whole counsel of God's Word.
Especially ask what it teaches about Jesus Christ, salvation, sin, repentance, grace, holiness, Scripture, the Gospel, and obedience to God.
A ministry can have tremendous music, enormous crowds, charismatic leadership, beautiful facilities, and sophisticated technology—
AND STILL TEACH ERROR.
Appearance doesn't establish truth.
Scripture does.
✝️ START WITH JESUS
One of the quickest ways to evaluate a church is to listen carefully to what it teaches about Jesus Christ.
Who is He?
Is Jesus truly the Son of God?
Is He God manifested in the flesh?
Was He born of a virgin?
Did He live without sin?
Did He die for our sins?
Was He bodily raised from the dead?
Is salvation found through Him?
Is He coming again?
Jesus isn't an accessory to Christianity.
HE IS CHRISTIANITY'S CENTER.
A church can discuss success, relationships, finances, happiness, politics, culture, motivation, and personal development every Sunday.
But if Jesus Christ is continually pushed to the edges—
something is terribly wrong.
✝️ THEN EXAMINE WHAT IT TEACHES ABOUT SALVATION
This is critical because eternity is at stake.
Does the church teach that salvation is God's gift through Jesus Christ?
Does it proclaim repentance and faith?
Does it preach Christ crucified and risen?
Or has salvation become something people supposedly earn through rituals, membership, money, works, religious performance, or loyalty to an organization?
Paul wrote:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith... Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
Good works follow salvation.
THEY DON'T PURCHASE IT.
Any teaching that obscures the Gospel deserves immediate biblical examination.
💰 BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WHEN MONEY ENTERS THE PULPIT
The Bible teaches giving.
The Bible teaches generosity.
The Bible teaches supporting ministry.
The Bible teaches caring for the poor.
But money has also been used to manipulate Christians.
Be careful whenever somebody implies that a particular donation will force God to give you a particular blessing.
Be careful when giving is presented as a spiritual investment scheme.
Be careful when fear, guilt, greed, or promised miracles are used to extract money.
GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER—NOT A MANIPULATED ONE.
Giving should flow from worship, obedience, generosity, compassion, and faith.
Not coercion.
🗣️ WHAT IF EVERYBODY ELSE BELIEVES IT?
Everybody can be wrong.
Popularity has never been God's test for truth.
Remember Noah.
Remember Elijah.
Remember the prophets.
Remember Jesus standing before crowds that eventually shouted:
“Crucify him.”
Truth doesn't become truth when it reaches 51 percent approval.
And falsehood doesn't become truth because millions repeat it.
THE CROWD IS NOT YOUR COMPASS.
God's Word is.
❤️ BUT BE HUMBLE WHEN YOU DISCOVER ERROR
This matters.
Suppose you study Scripture and become convinced that something your church teaches is wrong.
Don't immediately become arrogant.
Don't rush onto social media announcing that everybody in your church is deceived.
Don't assume you understand everything after one evening with a concordance.
Study.
Pray.
Read the entire passage.
Compare Scriptures.
Seek mature biblical counsel.
Speak respectfully with your pastor or teacher.
Ask:
“Pastor, could you help me understand how this teaching fits with this passage?”
A faithful pastor shouldn't be threatened by a sincere biblical question.
CORRECTION SHOULD BEGIN WITH HUMILITY.
Sometimes you'll discover the church was wrong.
Sometimes you'll discover you were wrong.
Either way—
truth wins.
And that's what matters.
🚩 WHAT IF MY CHURCH REFUSES SCRIPTURAL CORRECTION?
Now we arrive at the difficult part.
Suppose you've carefully studied.
You've prayed.
You've spoken respectfully with leadership.
And the teaching clearly contradicts Scripture.
Yet leadership refuses correction and insists that denominational doctrine, prophetic revelation, church tradition, personal authority, or institutional loyalty takes precedence over God's Word.
Then you face a decision.
YOUR FIRST LOYALTY BELONGS TO CHRIST.
Leaving a church shouldn't be done casually.
Church hopping every time something displeases us isn't spiritual maturity.
No church will agree with you about every secondary issue.
No pastor will preach every sermon exactly as you would.
But persistent, serious error involving foundational biblical truth is different.
There comes a point when remaining under false teaching can damage your spiritual life and influence your family.
You aren't obligated to remain somewhere merely because you've always been there.
FOLLOW TRUTH.
🚨 THERE WILL BE FALSE TEACHERS
Scripture never pretends otherwise.
Jesus warned:
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing...” — Matthew 7:15
Paul warned that a time would come when people would not endure sound doctrine but would seek teachers according to what they wanted to hear.
See 2 Timothy 4:3–4.
That's frightening because false teaching doesn't always succeed because people don't know better.
Sometimes it succeeds because—
PEOPLE LIKE WHAT THEY'RE HEARING.
Tell me God wants me wealthy.
Tell me repentance isn't necessary.
Tell me sin doesn't matter.
Tell me Jesus never requires sacrifice.
Tell me everybody automatically goes to heaven.
Tell me whatever makes me comfortable.
But the responsibility of the pulpit isn't to tell people what they want to hear.
IT IS TO TELL THEM WHAT GOD HAS SAID.
🔦 THE WORD IS STILL THE LAMP
Our world is overflowing with voices.
Podcasts.
YouTube.
TikTok.
Facebook.
Television.
Books.
Prophets.
Teachers.
Preachers.
Influencers.
AI.
Everybody has something to say.
But David's words remain:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Not:
“My feelings are a lamp.”
Not:
“My pastor is a lamp.”
Not:
“My denomination is a lamp.”
Not:
“Popular culture is a lamp.”
Not:
“Social media is a lamp.”
THY WORD.
📖 CHRISTIAN, KNOW YOUR BIBLE
This may be the most important practical point in this entire message.
YOU CANNOT EFFECTIVELY RECOGNIZE COUNTERFEIT TEACHING IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE TRUTH.
Read your Bible.
Not merely a verse sent to your phone every morning.
Read chapters.
Read books.
Study.
Ask questions.
Compare passages.
Learn context.
Pray before reading.
Listen to sound teaching—but verify it.
Bring your Bible to church.
Open it.
Use it.
Mark it.
Study it.
Love it.
Live it.
The goal isn't simply to win theological arguments.
The goal is to know God, understand His truth, walk faithfully, and avoid being carried away by every new doctrine that appears.
🙏 A PRAYER FOR DISCERNMENT
Father,
Thank You for giving us Your Word.
In a world filled with voices, opinions, traditions, doctrines, personalities, and competing claims to truth, help us never lose sight of the lamp You have placed in our hands.
Give us discernment.
Give us humility.
Give us wisdom.
Protect us from false teaching.
Protect us also from pride that assumes everyone else is wrong and we alone understand everything.
Teach us to search the Scriptures.
Give pastors courage to preach what Your Word says—even when it is unpopular.
Give congregations courage to examine what they hear.
When we're wrong, correct us.
When tradition contradicts Scripture, help us choose Scripture.
When culture contradicts Scripture, help us choose Scripture.
When our own desires contradict Scripture—
HELP US CHOOSE SCRIPTURE.
May Jesus Christ remain the center of our faith, and may Your Word establish every step we take.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
🔥 SO, HOW CAN I KNOW IF MY CHURCH IS WRONG?
Don't begin with rumors.
Don't begin with another denomination.
Don't begin with social media.
Don't begin with your feelings.
OPEN YOUR BIBLE.
Listen.
Read.
Study.
Compare.
Pray.
Test.
And when everything else has been said—
LET GOD'S WORD HAVE THE FINAL WORD.
Pastors change.
Churches change.
Denominations change.
Cultures change.
Opinions change.
GOD'S TRUTH DOES NOT.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105
