🧠 AMERICA'S MIND HAS CHANGED
How We Think, What We Value, Who Shaped Us—and What America Could Become 50 or 100 Years From Now
Something has happened to America.
I'm not merely talking about politics.
I'm not talking about whether Republicans or Democrats control Washington.
And I'm certainly not suggesting that everything about America fifty years ago was good or that everything about America today is bad.
I'm talking about something much deeper.
WE PROCESS LIFE DIFFERENTLY.
We receive information differently.
We remember differently.
We communicate differently.
We form opinions differently.
We establish relationships differently.
We determine what is true differently.
We raise children differently.
We understand authority differently.
We even seem to experience time, attention, community, morality, and identity differently.
How did that happen?
And perhaps the more important question is:
WHAT IS IT DOING TO US?
📺 GO BACK FIFTY YEARS
Imagine an American household in 1976.
There was no Google.
No Facebook.
No TikTok.
No YouTube.
No X.
No Instagram.
No smartphone.
No twenty-four-hour stream of notifications vibrating in your pocket.
No endless feed engineered to keep you scrolling.
Most Americans received information through a comparatively small number of sources:
Newspapers.
Radio.
Television.
Books.
Schools.
Churches.
Family.
Neighbors.
Community organizations.
You didn't carry virtually the accumulated information of civilization around in your pocket.
And when somebody left home, they were actually gone until they returned or found a telephone.
Some younger readers may have difficulty imagining that.
But many of us remember it.
📱 THEN THE INFORMATION EXPLOSION HAPPENED
Technology didn't merely give us more information.
It changed our relationship with information.
Today we don't simply seek information.
Information seeks us.
Your phone buzzes.
A headline appears.
A video begins.
Someone sends a message.
An advertisement follows you.
An algorithm recommends another video.
A controversy erupts.
Someone responds.
Someone reacts to the response.
Someone makes a video about the reaction to the response.
Before you've finished processing one subject—
HERE COMES ANOTHER.
Pew Research Center describes today's environment as one in which Americans encounter more information from more sources than ever, while the boundaries among news, entertainment, commentary, and other content increasingly blur.
That is an enormous cultural change.
🧠 WE DIDN'T JUST CHANGE THE MACHINE—THE MACHINE CHANGED US
Technology is not inherently evil.
I use it.
Our ministry uses it.
You're probably reading this because of it.
The Gospel can cross an ocean in seconds because of technology.
Families separated by thousands of miles can see each other's faces.
Medical knowledge can be shared.
Education can reach remote communities.
A Bible can be carried inside a telephone.
Those are extraordinary blessings.
But every powerful tool creates consequences.
Our minds now operate in an environment of extraordinary competition for our attention.
Scroll.
Swipe.

Watch.
React.
Share.
Repeat.
For young people especially, social media has become nearly universal. The U.S. Surgeon General reported that up to 95% of Americans ages 13–17 use a social-media platform, with about one-third saying they use social media “almost constantly.” The advisory also cautioned that the available evidence was insufficient to conclude that social media is adequately safe for children and adolescents.
Think about those words:
ALMOST CONSTANTLY.
What happens when a generation grows up with almost constant digital stimulation?
We're still discovering the answer.
📰 EVEN “WHAT IS NEWS?” ISN'T AS SIMPLE AS IT ONCE WAS
There was a time when most people could distinguish reasonably well between:
A newspaper article.
An editorial.
An advertisement.
A television news broadcast.
Entertainment.
Today those categories can occupy the same screen and sometimes look remarkably similar.
A fifteen-second video may influence someone's understanding of a complicated issue more than a 5,000-word investigation.
A viral post may travel farther than a correction.
A personality may be trusted more than an institution.
And increasingly, Americans disagree not merely about what something means—
but about what actually happened.
Trust has also changed. Pew found in 2025 that 56% of U.S. adults expressed at least some trust in information from national news organizations, compared with 76% when Pew first asked the question in 2016. Among adults under 30, trust in national news organizations was roughly comparable to trust in information from social media.
That should make all of us think.
👨👩👧👦 BUT TECHNOLOGY ISN'T THE WHOLE STORY
It would be easy to blame everything on smartphones.
That would be too simple.
America has experienced enormous changes in:
Family structure.
Religion.
Education.
Employment.
Mobility.
Entertainment.
Sexual norms.
Marriage.
Economics.
Immigration.
Media.
Neighborhood life.
Institutional trust.
Consumer culture.
Politics.
And attitudes toward authority and individual autonomy.
All of those interact.
A child isn't formed by one influence.
A child is formed by a world of influences.
Family.
Friends.
School.
Church—or the absence of church.
Entertainment.
Social media.
Advertising.
Celebrities.
Teachers.
Algorithms.
Culture.
And increasingly, strangers on a screen.
⛪ SOMETHING ELSE CHANGED: RELIGION
This matters greatly to a Christian ministry.
America fifty years ago was not a perfect Christian nation.
Let's not romanticize history.
There was racism.
Injustice.
Broken families.
Crime.
Hypocrisy.
Alcoholism.
Drug abuse.
Political corruption.
Sexual immorality.
Church scandals.
And plenty of people who claimed Christianity culturally without seriously following Jesus Christ.
But religious institutions occupied a different place in American life.
Pew's latest Religious Landscape Study found that 62% of U.S. adults identify as Christian, compared with 78% in 2007. Meanwhile, the religiously unaffiliated increased from 16% in 2007 to 29% in 2023–24. The decline appears to have slowed or temporarily leveled off in recent years, so it would be wrong to portray it as an uninterrupted collapse.
The generational difference, however, is striking.
Among adults ages 18–24, 46% identified as Christian in Pew's study, compared with 80% among adults 74 and older. Younger adults were also substantially less likely to pray daily or attend religious services monthly.
Whether you welcome those changes or lament them, you cannot reasonably deny that they affect culture.
When a society's religious beliefs change—
ITS MORAL CONVERSATIONS CHANGE TOO.
📖 “BUT PASTOR, VALUES ALWAYS CHANGE.”
Yes.
And sometimes they should.
That needs to be said.
Not everything handed down from previous generations deserves preservation.
Some traditions were unjust.
Some social expectations silenced people who should have been heard.
Some accepted practices desperately needed reform.
Age does not make something righteous.
OLD DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN GOOD.
But neither does new automatically mean better.
That is where discernment enters.
The Christian question should never simply be:
“Is this traditional?”
Nor should it be:
“Is this progressive?”
The question is:
“IS IT TRUE? IS IT RIGHT? DOES IT AGREE WITH GOD'S WORD?”
👴 “THIS GENERATION IS NOTHING LIKE OURS!”
Perhaps.
But older generations need some humility here.
Who raised this generation?
We did.
Who built many of the technologies they inherited?
We did.
Who created the corporations?
Who produced the entertainment?
Who changed the schools?
Who elected the leaders?
Who bought children smartphones?
Who allowed television into bedrooms?
Who stopped eating dinner together?
Who became too busy?
Who sometimes outsourced spiritual formation to one hour of Sunday school while culture discipled children the other 167 hours of the week?
WE DID.
We cannot create the environment and then stand at a distance shaking our heads at the people who grew up inside it.
❓ SO WHO IS TO BLAME?
Everybody wants a villain.
Politicians.
Hollywood.
Schools.
Churches.
Parents.
Corporations.
Social media.
Liberals.
Conservatives.
Universities.
The news media.
Big Tech.
And depending upon whom you ask, somebody on that list supposedly destroyed America.
Reality is considerably more complicated.
THERE IS NO SINGLE CULPRIT.
Technological innovation played a role.
Market incentives played a role.
Cultural movements played a role.
Changing family patterns played a role.
Political polarization played a role.
Religious change played a role.
Entertainment played a role.
Parents played a role.
Churches played a role.
And individual choices played a role.
Sometimes history isn't caused by somebody sitting in a room deciding:
“Let's change America.”
Millions of people make millions of seemingly small decisions.
Then twenty-five years later we look around and ask:
“HOW DID WE GET HERE?”
👀 WHY DIDN'T WE SEE IT COMING?
In many cases, we did.
We simply didn't understand the magnitude.
The first television didn't announce:
“One day Americans will spend enormous portions of their lives staring at screens.”
The first personal computer didn't announce it.
The first internet connection didn't announce it.
The first smartphone didn't announce it.
The first social-media account didn't announce it.
Each development seemed manageable by itself.
Useful.
Entertaining.
Convenient.
Profitable.
Then they converged.
The transformation happened incrementally.
And human beings are notoriously good at adapting to gradual change without realizing how far we've traveled.
⚠️ THERE IS ANOTHER DANGER: THE ALGORITHM KNOWS WHAT KEEPS YOU WATCHING
Once information becomes a business, your attention has economic value.
That creates a profound question:
WHO IS FORMING WHOM?
Are you choosing what you consume?
Or is what you consume gradually choosing what you become?
If a system learns that anger keeps you watching—
what will it show you?
If fear keeps you clicking—
what will it recommend?
If outrage keeps you engaged—
what kind of world will your screen eventually convince you that you inhabit?
This doesn't require a conspiracy.
It requires an incentive.
YOUR ATTENTION IS VALUABLE.
Guard it.
📖 THE BIBLE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THE MIND LONG BEFORE SMARTPHONES
Paul wrote:
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...” — Romans 12:2
Notice the battlefield.
THE MIND.
What enters repeatedly begins shaping what remains.
What we repeatedly watch can influence what we normalize.
What we repeatedly hear can influence what we believe.
What we repeatedly rehearse can influence what we become.
That was true before the internet.
It's simply more urgent when an entire world of voices can reach you twenty-four hours a day.
🇺🇸 WHERE WILL AMERICA BE IN 50 YEARS?
Nobody knows.
Anyone pretending to describe America in 2076 with certainty is guessing.
But trajectories matter.
If present forces continue without meaningful correction, Americans may live in an increasingly digital society where artificial intelligence mediates more education, employment, entertainment, relationships, commerce, and information.
But technology alone doesn't determine whether that future is good.
CHARACTER DOES.
Imagine extraordinary technology combined with wisdom, compassion, strong families, truthfulness, liberty, responsibility, and reverence for human dignity.
Technology could accomplish tremendous good.
Now imagine the same technological power combined with deception, isolation, addiction, surveillance, greed, hatred, and moral indifference.
Same technology.
Very different civilization.
🔮 WHAT ABOUT 100 YEARS?
America in 2126 may be almost unrecognizable to us.
Think about how someone from 1926 would react to 2026.
Commercial aviation.
Interstate highways.
Television.
Computers.
Satellites.
Smartphones.
Artificial intelligence.
Modern medicine.
Video calls.
Space exploration.
Now reverse the telescope.
What might someone living in 2126 think about us?
Perhaps they will consider some of our present debates primitive.
Perhaps they'll wonder why we failed to recognize dangers that seem obvious to them.
Perhaps they'll thank us for decisions we made.
Perhaps they'll pay dearly for decisions we refused to make.
WE ARE SOMEBODY'S ANCESTORS.
That thought ought to sober us.
👶 WE ARE BUILDING A WORLD WE WILL NOT LIVE TO SEE
Many of us reading this will not see 2126.
But our descendants may.
Our grandchildren.
Great-grandchildren.
Great-great-grandchildren.
They will inherit consequences from decisions made long before they were born.
The national debt we leave.
The institutions we preserve or destroy.
The environment we maintain.
The technologies we develop.
The freedoms we protect.
The families we strengthen.
The truth we teach.
The faith we transmit.
THE FUTURE IS BEING BUILT IN THE PRESENT.
⛪ AND CHURCH—WE NEED TO TALK
We cannot complain that culture is discipling young people if we refuse to disciple them ourselves.
We cannot give children a Bible they never see us read.
Tell them prayer matters while they never hear us pray.
Tell them church matters while treating worship as optional.
Tell them marriage matters while refusing to model commitment.
Tell them truth matters while sharing information online that we never bothered to verify.
Tell them Jesus is everything while living as though money, politics, possessions, sports, and entertainment are everything.
Young people notice inconsistency.
WE NEED MORE THAN CHRISTIAN WORDS.
We need Christian lives.
❤️ MAYBE AMERICA'S FUTURE ISN'T HOPELESS
This isn't a funeral for America.
Cultures change.
Movements reverse.
Generations surprise us.
People rediscover things previous generations discarded.
And even Pew's newest religious data contains an important caution against simplistic predictions: after decades of decline, the Christian share of the U.S. population has been relatively stable since around 2019, and the growth of religious unaffiliation has also recently leveled off.
History rarely travels in perfectly straight lines.
So I refuse to say:
“America is doomed.”
I don't know that.
Neither do you.
But I will say:
AMERICA IS BEING FORMED.
Every day.
And so are we.
🧭 THE QUESTION ISN'T WHETHER WE CAN RETURN TO 1976
We can't.
And perhaps we shouldn't want to.
The goal isn't to reconstruct some romanticized past.
The question is whether we can carry forward what was true, good, righteous, compassionate, and worth preserving while having the courage to abandon what was unjust or wrong.
We don't need yesterday's technology.
WE NEED TIMELESS TRUTH.
We don't need to make our grandchildren exactly like us.
We need to give them something worth carrying after we're gone.
🙏 PARENTS—GRANDPARENTS—PASTORS—TEACHERS
Talk to the children.
Not only at them.
Ask what they're watching.
Ask what they believe.
Ask why.
Listen before lecturing.
Teach them how to distinguish evidence from assertion.
Teach them that popularity doesn't equal truth.
Teach them how algorithms work.
Teach them to put the phone down.
Teach them to sit quietly.
Teach them to read something longer than a social-media post.
Teach them to talk with people who disagree with them without hating them.
Teach them that disagreement isn't violence.
Teach them compassion.
Teach them responsibility.
Teach them history.
And Christian—
TEACH THEM JESUS.
Not merely church culture.
Not denominational tradition alone.
Not political Christianity.
JESUS CHRIST.
🙏 LET US PRAY
Heavenly Father,
We look at our nation and recognize enormous change.
Some has brought extraordinary good.
Some has brought consequences we are only beginning to understand.
Give us wisdom not to worship the past.
Give us wisdom not to worship the future.
Give us discernment to recognize truth in the present.
Protect our children and grandchildren.
Guard their minds.
Help parents become parents again.
Help churches become places of biblical discipleship.
Help teachers teach truth with courage and humility.
Help leaders understand that decisions made today may affect generations they will never meet.
Forgive us where we have complained about younger generations while refusing to acknowledge the world we handed them.
Help us rebuild what is worth rebuilding.
Correct what needs correcting.
Preserve what is good.
Reject what is evil.
And above everything else, turn our hearts toward You.
Your Word says:
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...” — Romans 12:2
Renew our minds.
Renew our homes.
Renew our churches.
And Lord, if it be Your will—
RENEW OUR NATION.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
🇺🇸 SO WHERE IS AMERICA HEADED?
I cannot tell you what America will look like in 50 years.
I cannot tell you what America will look like in 100 years.
But I can tell you something about how we get there.
ONE GENERATION AT A TIME.
One family at a time.
One classroom at a time.
One church at a time.
One screen at a time.
One decision at a time.
One mind at a time.
The question isn't merely:
“What happened to America?”
Perhaps the more important questions are:
WHAT ARE WE BECOMING?
WHAT ARE WE TEACHING?
WHAT ARE WE LEAVING BEHIND?
And—
WHAT WILL THE GENERATIONS WHO COME AFTER US SAY WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN COMING?
We may not live to see their answer.
But we're helping write it today.
HELP US HELP THEM—ONE SOUL AT A TIME.
