There are some people whose lives cannot be adequately described by a single title.
James Langston is one of them.
Senior Pastor. Missionary. Author. Husband. Father. Grandpa. Retired U.S. Navy officer. Servant of Jesus Christ.
But behind those titles is something far more important: a lifetime of showing up.
Showing up for God.
Showing up for family.
Showing up for country.
Showing up for people who need encouragement.
And, after nearly seven decades of life, still believing there is more territory to possess for the Kingdom of God.
Today, we shine the spotlight on the Senior Pastor and founder of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.
FROM A SMALL TEXAS TOWN TO THE NATIONS
James Langston was born August 17, 1958, in El Campo, Texas, to Velma Langston.
Nothing about those humble beginnings would have suggested where the road would eventually lead.
At only six years old, his grandmother recognized something upon his life. At fourteen, James accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour.
That decision became the defining decision of his life.
Before there was a ministry, before there were books, before military rank, before international missions—there was Jesus.
And He remains the center today.
27 YEARS OF SERVICE TO AMERICA
Two weeks after graduating from El Campo High School in 1976, a 17-year-old James Langston entered U.S. Navy boot camp in San Diego.
He raised his right hand, took the oath, and began a journey that would span 27 years.
From enlisted sailor to Chief Petty Officer, then Chief Warrant Officer, and ultimately a Limited Duty Officer, James served at sea and ashore, at home and abroad, before retiring in April 2003.
His assignments took him aboard ships including the USS Dubuque (LPD-8) and USS Fletcher (DD-992) and to duty stations stretching from San Diego to Subic Bay in the Philippines and Naples, Italy. His military record includes numerous decorations and awards for service.
The Navy taught lessons about leadership, responsibility, sacrifice, perseverance and taking care of people.
But even while wearing the uniform of his country, God was preparing him to serve under another banner.
A HUSBAND BEFORE MANY OF THE OTHER TITLES
Then there is Cecilia.
James and Cecilia met in the Philippines on November 29, 1978, and married in Olongapo on March 14, 1979.
More than 47 years later, they are still walking together.
Through Navy deployments.
Children.
Ministry.
Moves across oceans.
Good seasons.
Hard seasons.
Victories.
Disappointments.
Prayer.
And more memories than either could probably count.
Before James was known by thousands as an author or pastor, there was a young husband learning what it meant to love one woman faithfully through the changing seasons of life.
DAD AND GRANDPA
James and Cecilia are the parents of six children and grandparents of fifteen.
Those may be two of the most important statistics in this entire spotlight.
Because ministry can impress strangers while family knows the person who comes home.
Family sees behind the pulpit.
They know the laugh, the imperfections, the stories, the lessons, the stubborn moments, the sacrifices, the victories—and probably a few dad and grandpa sayings they have heard more times than they can count.
James has written about parenting, marriage, mothers, grandparents, family relationships and the choices that shape generations. Some of that writing grew from deeply personal experiences, including lessons learned from his own mother and the powerful spiritual influence of his praying great-grandmother and grandmother.
For him, family has never merely been something to write about.
It has been something to live.
THE PASTOR
James is the founder and Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, a full-Gospel, interdenominational ministry with a heart for reaching people beyond church walls.
The calling has carried the ministry across nations and cultures, including approximately two decades of ministry connection with Italy and an expanding missionary focus in the Philippines and Asia.
The mission is simple enough to say but large enough to consume a lifetime:
Take the Gospel to people.
Not merely to those who can come to us.
Go to them.
The ministry's vision encompasses evangelism, discipleship, church planting, youth outreach, humanitarian assistance, education, medical and dental outreach, Bible distribution, food assistance and practical help for families and communities.
Thus the ministry's words:
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International — Your Feet to the Nations.
THE AUTHOR
Then there are the books.
More than 40 titles have flowed from James Langston's experiences, convictions, questions, failures, victories, ministry encounters, family life, military service and years of studying Scripture.
His subjects range widely because life ranges widely.
Faith. Prayer. Family. Leadership. America. Sin. Consequences. Encouragement. Church. Culture. Human trafficking. Sports. Government. Spiritual warfare. Personal responsibility. Recovery. Hope.
Published works such as The Building of A Church explore faith, leadership and perseverance, while Out of the Ashes addresses adversity, renewal and restoration. Other works confront cultural and national issues or examine the consequences of choices.
And the purpose extends beyond selling books.
Book royalties help support the missionary work of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.
Words on pages are being turned into ministry on the ground.
STILL A MISSIONARY
At 68, some people might reasonably decide they have done enough.
Twenty-seven years in the Navy.
More than four decades of marriage.
Six children.
Fifteen grandchildren.
Decades of ministry.
More than 40 books.
International travel.
Thousands of sermons, prayers, conversations, posts and words of encouragement.
Surely that earns someone permission to sit down.
James apparently didn't get the memo.
There are still people who have never heard the Gospel.
There are still children who need help.
There are still families who need encouragement.
There are still communities to reach.
There are still Bibles to place into hands.
There are still churches to establish.
There are still prayers to pray.
There are still books to write.
And there are still souls—never-ending, never-dying souls—who need Jesus Christ.
THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE SPOTLIGHT
Perhaps that is what we hope you see in this spotlight.
Not a perfect man.
Not a man who has never made mistakes.
Not someone who has somehow escaped life's disappointments, detours, tears or hard lessons.
But a man who has kept getting back up.
A man who still believes God.
A husband who still loves the woman he married in 1979.
A father and grandfather who understands that legacy is measured in people, not possessions.
A veteran who gave 27 years in service to his country.
An author who believes words can challenge minds and change lives.
A missionary who still believes the Great Commission means GO.
And a pastor who, after all these years, is still pointing beyond himself and saying:
Look to Jesus.
Because when the uniforms are put away, the books are closed, the titles disappear, the applause grows silent, and our earthly journeys are finished, only one question will ultimately matter:
Were we faithful with what God placed into our hands?
James Langston's journey isn't finished.
There are more miles ahead.
More people to reach.
More prayers to pray.
More territory to possess.
More opportunities to serve.
And if God grants another day, there is another day to tell somebody that Jesus saves.
That is the man behind the title.
That is the heart behind the ministry.
And that is why, today, we put the spotlight on:
