Freedom Is Never Free

Every night, millions of Americans go to bed in peace.

Families gather around dinner tables.

Children sleep safely in their beds.

Businesses close their doors.

Churches worship freely.

Sports continue.

Schools educate.

Life moves forward.

Most people never stop to ask why.

The answer is simple.

Someone is standing the watch.

Across the globe, more than two million men and women of the United States Armed Forces—active duty, Reserve, National Guard, and civilian support personnel—serve quietly, faithfully, and often far from home to preserve the freedoms many of us enjoy every day.

At Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, we pray for them daily.

Not because war is glorious.

But because peace is precious.

A Personal Perspective

This subject is especially close to my heart.

I served 27 years in the United States Navy, retiring after a career that allowed me to serve alongside some of the finest men and women our nation has ever produced.

During those years, I learned something that many civilians never have the opportunity to understand.

The military is not simply another job.

It is not merely a career.

It is a way of life.

It asks more.

It demands more.

It sacrifices more.

Unless you have lived it, it is difficult to fully appreciate what military life requires—not only from the service member, but also from spouses, children, parents, and loved ones.

Why Does America Need a Strong Military?

Some people wonder why the United States invests so heavily in national defense.

The answer is not because America seeks conflict.

The goal of a strong military is to prevent conflict whenever possible.

History repeatedly teaches us that weakness often invites aggression, while preparedness can discourage it.

A capable military serves many purposes:

• Protecting our homeland.
• Defending allies.
• Safeguarding international trade routes.
• Responding to terrorism.
• Providing humanitarian assistance after natural disasters.
• Evacuating civilians from dangerous regions.
• Maintaining stability in areas of strategic importance.
• Deterring adversaries from attacking.

The strongest military is not measured only by its equipment.

It is measured by the character, discipline, courage, professionalism, and sacrifice of the people who wear the uniform.

More Than a Job

Many compare military service to working for a civilian company.

While there are similarities—leadership, teamwork, technical expertise, and accountability—the differences are profound.

A civilian employee generally has the freedom to resign, choose where to live, negotiate work schedules, and remain with family.

A service member may have little notice before deploying halfway around the world.

Military personnel can be transferred across the country—or across the globe.

Birthdays are missed.

Anniversaries are missed.

Christmases are missed.

Children grow up while Mom or Dad is overseas.

Some miss the birth of a child.

Others return home to discover that life has continued without them.

Military members serve twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Even while sleeping, they remain subject to recall.

The mission comes first.

That level of commitment is difficult to explain to someone who has never experienced it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

The military becomes its own unique society.

People from every state.

Every race.

Every economic background.

Every political viewpoint.

Every walk of life.

They eat together.

Train together.

Deploy together.

Celebrate together.

Grieve together.

And, if necessary, they are willing to lay down their lives for one another.

That bond cannot be manufactured.

It is forged through hardship, sacrifice, and trust.

A Brief Look at America's Armed Forces

United States Army

The Army is the nation's oldest branch of military service.

Its mission centers on protecting America through land operations. Soldiers defend territory, provide humanitarian assistance, support allies, and respond to crises around the world.

United States Marine Corps

Known for rapid response and expeditionary warfare, Marines are trained to deploy quickly into some of the world's most challenging environments. Their reputation for discipline, toughness, and adaptability is recognized around the globe.

United States Navy

The Navy projects American presence across the world's oceans. Aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, amphibious ships, and support vessels protect sea lanes, deter aggression, deliver humanitarian aid, and ensure freedom of navigation across international waters.

United States Air Force

The Air Force provides global airpower, strategic mobility, intelligence, surveillance, precision strike capability, and air superiority. Its ability to move personnel and supplies anywhere in the world within hours is unmatched.

United States Space Force

America's newest military branch safeguards critical space-based capabilities that modern communication, navigation, weather forecasting, intelligence, and national defense depend upon every day.

United States Coast Guard

Although operating under different departmental authority during peacetime, the Coast Guard protects America's coastlines, enforces maritime law, conducts search-and-rescue operations, combats drug trafficking, safeguards ports, and saves countless lives each year. During wartime, it can operate as part of the Department of the Navy.

The Families Who Also Serve

Military spouses carry enormous responsibilities.

Many raise children alone during lengthy deployments.

They move frequently.

They leave careers behind.

They adapt to new schools, new churches, new communities, and new friends every few years.

Military children become experts at saying goodbye.

They, too, serve.

Their sacrifices deserve our gratitude and our prayers.

The Battles We Never See

Not every battle takes place on a battlefield.

Many service members quietly carry invisible burdens.

Combat stress.

Grief.

Physical injuries.

Long separations.

Loneliness.

Financial concerns.

Transitions back to civilian life.

Some struggle with emotional wounds that remain long after the uniform is folded away.

These men and women need more than our applause.

They need our compassion.

Our encouragement.

And our prayers.

Our Biblical Responsibility

Scripture repeatedly reminds us to pray for those entrusted with positions of responsibility and protection.

We pray for government leaders.

We pray for first responders.

We pray for law enforcement.

And we should faithfully pray for those who defend our nation.

Whether stationed aboard ships, serving on distant bases, flying dangerous missions, patrolling borders, standing watch beneath the sea, operating in space, or training at home, every service member deserves to know that someone is praying for them.

To every veteran...

Every active-duty member...

Every Reservist...

Every National Guardsman...

Every Coast Guardsman...

And every military family...

Thank you.

Thank you for the birthdays you missed.

Thank you for the holidays you sacrificed.

Thank you for the dangers you accepted.

Thank you for the freedoms you helped preserve.

Your service matters.

Your sacrifice matters.

And you are not forgotten.

A Prayer for the United States Armed Forces

Heavenly Father,

Today we lift before You every member of the United States Armed Forces. Surround them with Your protection wherever they serve—at home, at sea, in the air, on land, beneath the oceans, and in space. Grant them wisdom in every decision, courage in every challenge, discipline in every duty, and integrity in every action.

Strengthen commanders with sound judgment and humility. Watch over young service members who are far from home. Comfort military spouses and children during times of separation, and fill their homes with peace and hope.

Protect those deployed to dangerous places. Bring them safely home to their loved ones. Heal those who carry visible and invisible wounds. Encourage veterans adjusting to civilian life, reminding them that their service continues to have lasting value.

Most of all, draw every service member into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. May they discover that while governments may change and assignments may end, Your love is steadfast, Your promises are sure, and Your presence never leaves them.

May America remain grateful for those who stand the watch, and may we never forget that true security is found not only in the strength of our armed forces, but ultimately in You.

We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

A Final Thought

The average American may never step onto the deck of an aircraft carrier, march with an infantry unit, fly a combat sortie, patrol the nation's coastline, or support missions in space.

But every American benefits from those who do.

The next time you see someone in uniform, don't just thank them.

Pray for them.

Because while we sleep, somewhere around the world, someone is standing the watch so that freedom may endure.
