🔧 Shade Tree Christians?
Growing up, I often heard Mama refer to someone as a "shade tree mechanic." These were the individuals who worked under a tree, in a backyard, or in a small garage. People sought them out because they were usually less expensive than a certified dealership, and often they would do only what you wanted done—or tell you only what you wanted to hear.
Life, however, has a way of teaching us an important lesson: you generally get back what you invest. Whether it's time, trust, knowledge, expertise, or truth, shortcuts often come with hidden costs.
The same principle applies to our spiritual lives.
Today, we live in a world where many claim the name "Christian." If someone talks the part, dresses the part, and acts the part, few people question their authenticity. We tend to accept people for who they say they are—until proven otherwise.
But there is one crucial difference: while people may be fooled, God never is.
The Lord knows those who truly belong to Him. He sees beyond appearances, beyond words, and beyond carefully crafted images. That should cause each of us to pause and examine not only who we follow, but also who we ourselves are before God.
It would behoove us to take the time to know who's who in this life—because every decision we make carries eternal consequences.
"Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his..." (2 Timothy 2:19)
