WHEN RIGHT BECOMES WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE

What is moral relativism?

Simply stated, moral relativism is the belief that there are no absolute moral truths that apply to everyone, everywhere, at all times. Instead, right and wrong are viewed as matters of personal opinion, cultural preference, social trends, or individual circumstances.

For thousands of years, societies generally operated on the belief that certain things were universally right and certain things were universally wrong. Moral relativism challenges that idea by suggesting that truth itself can be flexible.

Its impact on modern society has been profound.

When truth becomes subjective, people begin defining morality for themselves. What one person calls right, another calls wrong. As a result, disagreements become harder to resolve because there is no longer a common moral standard to appeal to.

Many observers point to moral relativism as contributing to:
• The erosion of shared values
• Increased social division
• The weakening of personal accountability
• Confusion regarding ethics, family, marriage, and human behavior
• A growing tendency to redefine truth according to personal preference

Is moral relativism part of socialism?

Not inherently. Moral relativism is a philosophical concept, while socialism is an economic and political system. Some critics argue that certain political movements have embraced forms of moral relativism, while others strongly reject that connection. The two are not the same thing and should not automatically be equated.

For Christians, the ultimate question is this: If truth changes with every generation, every culture, and every opinion, then what becomes of God's Word?

Jesus declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). God's truth does not change with public opinion, election cycles, cultural trends, or social media influence.

A society without an anchor drifts. A society anchored in truth can weather any storm.

What do you believe? Is truth absolute, or is it whatever people decide it should be?
