"What Can We Do?"
When the Whole Creation Is Groaning for Redemption
"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now." — Romans 8:22
Can you feel it?
You cannot always explain it.
You cannot always put it into words.
Sometimes it wakes you in the middle of the night.
Sometimes it settles over you while watching the evening news.
Sometimes it comes as you hold your children or grandchildren just a little tighter.
Sometimes it comes when another tragedy flashes across your television screen.
Sometimes it comes when you hear of another war...
Another school shooting...
Another natural disaster...
Another overdose...
Another broken family...
Another child trafficked...
Another act of terrorism...
Another nation trembling under fear.
There is an unmistakable sense that something is terribly wrong.
And you would be right.
The Bible Explained It Long Ago
The Apostle Paul wrote these remarkable words nearly two thousand years ago:
"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now." (Romans 8:22)
Notice what he says.
Not merely humanity.
The whole creation.
Creation itself groans.
The earth bears scars.
The weather grows increasingly violent.
Diseases emerge.
The ground shakes.
Floods overwhelm.
Fires consume.
Storms devastate.
The natural world itself seems to cry out.
Why?
Because creation was never intended to exist under the curse of sin.
Sin Is More Powerful Than We Imagine
Many people think of sin as merely breaking a rule.
The Bible presents something far more sobering.
Sin is a spiritual disease that infected all of creation.
When Adam and Eve rebelled against God, their decision affected far more than themselves.
Death entered the world.
Pain entered the world.
Decay entered the world.
Creation itself was placed under a curse.
That is why the Bible tells us the ground was cursed.
That is why suffering exists.
That is why even nature bears witness that something has gone terribly wrong.
The consequences of sin extend farther than human hearts.
They ripple throughout creation itself.
Is the World Really Getting Better?
Many people sincerely believe humanity is gradually improving.
Technology advances.
Medicine advances.
Education expands.
Communication becomes instantaneous.
Yet while our inventions have become more sophisticated, our hearts have not.
The Bible warned us this would happen.
Genesis 6:5 declares:
"And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."
Those words describe the days before the Flood.
Yet they sound remarkably familiar today.
Our tools have changed.
Human nature has not.
Evil Has Taken Center Stage
There was a time when many sins hid in darkness.
Today they often demand applause.
What Scripture once called evil is now frequently celebrated.
Truth is dismissed as opinion.
Morality becomes negotiable.
The sacred becomes ordinary.
The ordinary becomes sacred.
Good is called evil.
Evil is called good.
The prophet Isaiah warned that such a day would come.
And here we are.
It often feels like watching a runaway freight train racing toward disaster while no one seems able—or willing—to apply the brakes.
The deeper tragedy is that many no longer recognize the danger.
We Are Looking Everywhere...
Except Upward
Faced with uncertainty, people desperately search for answers.
Some place their hope in politics.
Others trust science alone.
Some believe wealth will provide security.
Others seek fulfillment through entertainment.
Some pursue power.
Others chase pleasure.
Many turn inward, believing the answer lies within themselves.
Yet after exhausting every alternative, they often discover the same painful truth.
Without God, nothing truly satisfies.
The human heart was created for fellowship with its Creator.
Nothing else fits.
So... What Can We Do?
That question echoes across our generation.
"What can we do?"
The answer begins by recognizing what we cannot do.
We cannot legislate away sin.
We cannot educate away selfishness.
We cannot invent away brokenness.
We cannot purchase peace.
We cannot negotiate righteousness.
The deepest problem facing humanity is not political.
It is not economic.
It is not educational.
It is not technological.
It is spiritual.
And only a spiritual solution can address a spiritual problem.
We Must Return to God
Throughout Scripture, whenever God's people turned back to Him, hope was restored.
Not because circumstances immediately changed.
But because hearts changed.
National revival has never begun in government buildings.
It has always begun when ordinary people humbled themselves before Almighty God.
God's promise still stands:
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Notice where revival begins.
With God's people.
Not with "those people."
With us.
The Gospel Is Still the Answer
When Jesus entered this world, He did not come merely to improve society.
He came to redeem sinners.
He came to reconcile humanity with God.
He came to conquer sin through His death.
He came to defeat death through His resurrection.
He came to establish a Kingdom that will never end.
The Cross is God's answer to humanity's deepest problem.
Every other solution merely trims the branches.
The Gospel strikes at the root.
What Can You Do Today?
Perhaps you are asking,
"What difference can one person make?"
More than you imagine.
Repent.
Believe the Gospel.
Pray faithfully.
Read God's Word daily.
Lead your family toward Christ.
Serve your local church.
Love your neighbor.
Forgive those who have hurt you.
Share your faith.
Support the work of missions.
Stand for truth with humility and compassion.
Become the light Jesus called you to be.
Darkness cannot overcome even a single light.
There Is Hope
Romans 8 does not end with groaning.
It ends with hope.
The same chapter that tells us creation groans also points us toward the glorious day when Christ will make all things new.
One day there will be:
No more death.
No more disease.
No more violence.
No more hatred.
No more human trafficking.
No more war.
No more corruption.
No more tears.
No more curse.
Jesus Christ will reign.
Justice will prevail.
Creation itself will be liberated from the bondage of corruption.
The groaning will cease.
The King will reign.
An Invitation
If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, there has never been a more important moment than now.
Our world does not need another philosophy.
It does not need another political movement.
It does not need another technological breakthrough.
It needs Jesus Christ.
The One who died for our sins.
The One who rose again.
The One who offers forgiveness, peace, purpose, and eternal life.
The same Savior who calmed storms can calm your heart.
The same Savior who raised the dead can give new life to your soul.
The same Savior who promised to return is still calling people to Himself today.
Do not wait until tomorrow.
Come to Him today.
A Prayer of Commitment
Heavenly Father,
I confess that I have sinned and fallen short of Your glory. I cannot save myself, and I need Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins, rose again on the third day, and is alive forevermore.
Today I turn from my sin and place my faith in Jesus Christ alone as my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Teach me Your Word. Help me to follow You faithfully and become the person You created me to be.
Use my life to shine Your light in a dark world until the day Jesus returns.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
The Final Word
You feel it.
You sense it.
The world is groaning.
And so are countless hearts.
But the story is not over.
Jesus Christ is still saving.
The Holy Spirit is still drawing people to God.
The Church is still proclaiming the Gospel.
And one day, the trumpet will sound.
The King will return.
The curse will be lifted.
Creation will rejoice.
Until that glorious day, may we remain faithful—preaching Christ, loving people, serving others, and proclaiming without apology that Jesus Christ is the hope of the world.
