GIVING TUESDAY: SOMETIMES THERE IS NO PLAN B
Somewhere in Asia, Someone Is Praying for Help—and God May Have Placed Part of the Answer in Our Hands
There are fundraising appeals that begin with numbers.
Today, I don't want to begin there.
I want to begin with people.
A mother.
A child.
A family.
A student.
A village.
Someone who needs to hear about Jesus Christ.
Someone whose problem cannot simply be postponed until next month.
Someone who doesn't have three organizations waiting in line to help if the first one cannot.
Someone for whom the words “We don't have enough” can have consequences far greater than inconvenience.
This Giving Tuesday, I want to speak plainly from my heart to yours.
WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Not to make Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International look successful.
Not to make our name bigger.
Not to build an impressive organization.
We need your help because there are people on the other side of our prayers.
And some of them have very few places left to turn.
THIS IS ABOUT MORE THAN MONEY
When we talk about evangelizing Asia, the words can sound enormous.
Asia.
Billions of people.
Thousands of islands.
Cities.
Provinces.
Villages.
Different languages and cultures.
How can one ministry possibly make a difference?
The answer is simple:
ONE PERSON AT A TIME.
We may not be able to reach everybody today.
But we can reach somebody.
We may not be able to feed every hungry family.
But perhaps we can feed one.
We cannot educate every child.
But we can help one student remain in school.
We cannot repair every damaged home.
But perhaps we can help one family have a safe place to sleep.
We cannot personally preach the Gospel in every Asian community.
But with partners standing beside us, we can keep going farther.
That is what your Giving Tuesday gift represents.
Not merely dollars.
REACH.
COME WITH ME FOR A MOMENT
Imagine traveling into a community where need isn't theoretical.
You meet a family.
You listen.
And somewhere during the conversation, you realize they aren't asking for luxury.
They aren't asking for the newest phone.
They aren't worried about upgrading their television.
They're trying to handle today.
Food.
Medicine.
School expenses.
Shelter.
Transportation.
Basic necessities.
And then comes the difficult moment.
You know what would help.
They know you want to help.
But desire alone cannot purchase food.
Compassion alone cannot buy building materials.
Good intentions cannot fuel a vehicle.
Prayer is essential—and we will always pray.
But sometimes after saying “Amen,” God expects somebody to get up and do something.
THERE ARE MOMENTS WHEN HELP CANNOT WAIT
This is one of the realities of missionary work that a photograph cannot always communicate.
Sometimes tomorrow is too late.
When someone is hungry, hunger doesn't take appointments.
When severe weather damages a family's shelter, the rain doesn't wait until the ministry raises enough money.
When a child needs assistance, growing up doesn't pause while adults decide whether the need is important enough.
When someone desperately needs hope, we don't know how long their heart will remain open.
And when an opportunity comes to share the Gospel—
WE MUST GO WHILE THE DOOR IS OPEN.
“SURELY SOMEBODY ELSE WILL HELP”
We need to talk about this.
It is easy to see suffering online and assume:
“Somebody will take care of that.”
Maybe.
But sometimes everybody thinks somebody else will do it.
And nobody does.
For some of the people we encounter, there isn't another ministry waiting behind us.
There isn't always a government program that will solve the problem.
There isn't necessarily a wealthy relative.
There may not be another missionary organization coming tomorrow.
Sometimes when we cannot help—
THERE IS NO PLAN B.
That is difficult to say.
It is considerably more difficult to witness.
THIS IS WHERE YOU ENTER THE STORY
You may never travel to the Philippines.
You may never walk the streets we walk.
You may never sit beside the families we meet.
You may never personally encounter the children our ministry hopes to help.
But that doesn't mean you cannot reach them.
WE CAN GO TOGETHER.
You provide.
We carry.
You pray.
We go.
You give.
We put your generosity to work.
You help make it possible for somebody thousands of miles away to discover that Christians they have never met cared enough to do something.
That's partnership.
THE GOSPEL MUST HAVE FEET
James asks a piercing question:
“If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled... what doth it profit?” — James 2:15–16
Those verses challenge us.
There is a time to say:
“I'm praying for you.”
And there is a time when prayer should move our hands.
Christian compassion should have feet.
Hands.
Food.
Clothing.
Medicine.
Bibles.
Transportation.
Building materials.
School assistance.
And most importantly—
THE MESSAGE OF JESUS CHRIST.
We help because Christ loves people.
And we preach because temporary assistance alone cannot answer humanity's greatest need.
People need hope for today.
But they also need Jesus for eternity.
WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO?
Our vision for Asia—and particularly the Philippines—is not small.
We want to evangelize.
Disciple.
Plant churches.
Help children and young people.
Support education.
Reach families.
Respond when disasters strike.
Provide humanitarian assistance where possible.
Develop ministry facilities.
Strengthen communities.
Preach Jesus Christ.
And go into places where somebody still needs to hear:
“GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU.”
The Great Commission is not merely a Scripture we quote.
It is an assignment.
“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” — Mark 16:15
We take “go” seriously.
But going costs something.
MISSIONARY WORK DOES NOT RUN ON GOOD INTENTIONS
We wish it did.
Vehicles need fuel.
Outreach materials cost money.
Food costs money.
Construction materials cost money.
School assistance costs money.
Transportation costs money.
Relief supplies cost money.
Ministry facilities cost money.
Travel costs money.
Helping people in practical ways costs money.
There is nothing particularly glamorous about saying that.
It is simply reality.
The Gospel is free.
BUT GETTING THE GOSPEL TO PEOPLE IS NOT.
Someone has to help carry it.
PERHAPS YOU THINK YOUR GIFT IS TOO SMALL
Please don't.
One of the greatest mistakes we make is assuming that if we cannot do something enormous, we should do nothing.
That isn't how ministry works.
A small gift joined with another small gift becomes provision.
Five people help.
Then ten.
Then fifty.
Suddenly something that looked impossible begins moving.
Jesus once watched a widow give two mites.
Others gave considerably more.
Yet Jesus noticed her.
Why?
Because Heaven does not measure generosity solely by the number written on the gift.
God sees the heart.
So if all you can give is a little—
LET YOUR LITTLE JOIN SOMEBODY ELSE'S LITTLE.
God has always known how to do remarkable things with what people willingly place into His hands.
AND IF GOD HAS BLESSED YOU TO DO MORE...
Then perhaps this Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to ask Him:
“Lord, what portion of what You have entrusted to me belongs in this mission?”
Not:
“What is the smallest amount I can give?”
But:
“WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ME DO?”
That answer is between you and God.
We don't want anyone giving under manipulation.
We don't want anyone neglecting essential family responsibilities.
We don't want guilt giving.
We want prayerful giving.
A gift accompanied by:
“Lord, use this.”
That's powerful.
SOMETIMES IT REALLY CAN BECOME A LIFE-OR-DEATH MATTER
We should be careful with those words.
We should never manufacture urgency.
But neither should we sanitize genuine human need.
Extreme poverty, disasters, unsafe shelter, hunger, lack of essential resources, and other crises can become serious threats to human well-being.
For people living near the edge, one additional crisis can push a fragile situation into something dangerous.
That is why helping hands matter.
Sometimes assistance provides food.
Sometimes stability.
Sometimes protection.
Sometimes an opportunity.
Sometimes hope.
And sometimes the difference made by timely assistance may be far greater than the giver ever knows.
You may never meet the person your generosity helped.
But God knows their name.
THINK ABOUT THE CHILD
This is where statistics become personal.
Imagine a child looking at you.
Not “poverty.”
Not “Asia.”
Not “missions.”
A child.
A face.
A name.
A future.
That child didn't choose the circumstances into which he or she was born.
Children cannot select their parents' income.
They cannot control natural disasters.
They cannot determine national economic conditions.
They cannot simply move somewhere easier.
But somebody can reach toward them.
Somebody can say:
“YOU ARE NOT INVISIBLE.”
Education can change a future.
Food can change a day.
Encouragement can change a heart.
The Gospel can change eternity.
NOW THINK ABOUT THE MOTHER
She wants what mothers everywhere want.
Her children safe.
Fed.
Healthy.
Educated.
Given an opportunity to become something.
She may never know your name.
She may never shake your hand.
But perhaps because you gave, someone from Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International can stand where you cannot and say:
“Someone cared.”
Not because we're heroes.
We're not.
We're servants.
And without people standing behind us—
OUR HANDS CAN ONLY REACH SO FAR.
THAT IS THE PART WE NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND
We cannot give what we do not have.
We cannot spend money that was never provided.
We cannot promise help without resources to fulfill the promise.
Sometimes the hardest part of ministry is not seeing the need.
It is seeing the need and knowing what could be done—but lacking what is necessary to do it.
That hurts.
Because there is a human being standing on the other side of the shortage.
This Giving Tuesday, we are asking you to help close that gap.
YOUR GIFT BECOMES SOMETHING
Please don't think of giving as money disappearing from your account.
Think about what it becomes.
It can become transportation.
Food.
Educational assistance.
Outreach.
Evangelistic materials.
Missionary movement.
Practical compassion.
Building progress.
A Bible.
A conversation.
A helping hand.
An opportunity to tell someone:
“JESUS LOVES YOU.”
Your gift leaves your hand—
but its impact keeps traveling.
AND SOMETIMES THE PERSON HELPED TODAY HELPS SOMEBODY TOMORROW
We may never see the end of what one act of generosity accomplishes.
A child receives help.
That child grows.
Gets educated.
Builds a family.
Serves a community.
Helps another child.
A person hears the Gospel.
Accepts Jesus Christ.
Shares Christ with family.
That family reaches someone else.
Years later, people you never met are serving God because someone once helped carry the Gospel into their community.
This is why we keep going.
WE ARE ASKING FOR MORE THAN DONATIONS
We need your prayers.
Please pray for us.
Pray for wisdom.
Protection.
Provision.
Open doors.
Missionaries.
Workers.
Resources.
Communities.
Children.
Families.
And souls.
Pray that God will keep us sensitive enough to recognize the person others may overlook.
Pray that we never become so busy building a ministry that we forget why the ministry exists.
And then—
if God touches your heart—
help us.
THIS GIVING TUESDAY, PUT YOUR HAND IN OURS
You don't have to cross an ocean.
We'll go.
You don't have to personally locate the village.
We'll go.
You don't have to organize the outreach.
We'll go.
But we need partners who will say:
“YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO ALONE.”
That may be the most beautiful thing a missionary can hear.
Because when you give, pray, share, and stand with us—
we aren't going alone.
We're carrying you with us.
WHAT IF YOUR GIFT HELPS US REACH ONE MORE?
One more child.
One more family.
One more student.
One more community.
One more village.
One more hurting person.
One more person who has almost given up.
One more soul who has never clearly heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Would that be worth it?
We believe it would.
Jesus taught:
“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” — Matthew 25:40
One matters.
Always has.
Always will.
BEFORE YOU SCROLL AWAY...
Please give us sixty seconds.
Not necessarily to give immediately.
To pray.
Ask:
“LORD, DO YOU WANT ME TO HELP?”
Then listen.
If the answer is no, we respect that.
Please pray for us.
Share the mission with someone else.
But if something in your heart says:
“I can help...”
please don't assume somebody else will.
Because sometimes there isn't somebody else.
Sometimes—
YOU ARE THE SOMEBODY.
HELP US HELP THEM
That phrase has become very important to us.
Help us help them.
We know we cannot solve every problem.
We know we cannot reach everyone.
We know our resources have limits.
But we refuse to allow what we cannot do to become an excuse for not doing what we can.
There are still souls to reach.
Still hungry people to feed.
Still children to encourage.
Still communities to enter.
Still Gospel seeds to plant.
Still buildings and ministry infrastructure to develop.
Still doors God is opening throughout Asia.
And while those doors remain open—
WE WANT TO WALK THROUGH THEM.
But we need you walking with us.
THIS GIVING TUESDAY, LET COMPASSION BECOME ACTION
Pray.
Give.
Share.
Partner.
Tell somebody.
Help us place another set of hands where help is needed.
Help us put feet beneath another prayer.
Help us carry Jesus Christ into another community.
Help us remind someone halfway around the world:
You have not been forgotten.
Because sometimes there is no second organization.
No third option.
No backup plan.
Sometimes there is simply a need—
a prayer—
an open door—
and someone like you deciding:
“I WILL HELP.”
And from the bottom of our hearts:
THANK YOU.
Thank you for praying.
Thank you for believing.
Thank you for giving.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for helping us help them.
And thank you for putting your hands alongside ours as we continue carrying the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout Asia—
ONE SOUL. ONE FAMILY. ONE COMMUNITY AT A TIME.
