A LIGHT SET UPON A HILL
You Never Know How Far the Light Is Reaching
Sometimes God allows you to see just enough of what He is doing to remind you:
Keep going.
Keep praying.
Keep preaching.
Keep giving.
Keep reaching.
Keep believing.
Because the light may be traveling much farther than you realize.
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International has often sought to be a light in a darkened world. But let me make something perfectly clear from the beginning:
WE TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THE LIGHT.
If there is anything good being reflected through this ministry, the Light is Jesus Christ.
We are merely trying to hold the lamp high enough for somebody else to see Him.
Jesus said:
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” — Matthew 5:14
Recently, I was reminded just how far that light can travel.
And the reminder came from one of the most unexpected places imaginable.
A dentist's office.
IT STARTED WITH AN ORDINARY APPOINTMENT
Not too long ago, a testimony concerning the reach of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International was brought to my attention.
A young lady who had been a member of our church relocated after her husband was reassigned.
She moved to another state—
thousands of miles away.
Life moved forward.
New surroundings.
New routines.
New people.
Then one day, she went to a dentist's office for some routine dental work.
Nothing unusual.
Nothing particularly spiritual.
Just another appointment on another ordinary day.
But God has an interesting way of turning ordinary moments into reminders that He has been working where we could not see Him.
While at the office, this young lady began chatting with the receptionist.
You know how conversations go.
One subject leads to another.
Then another.
Somehow, of all the possible subjects they could have discussed, their conversation turned toward online ministries.
The receptionist mentioned that she had recently discovered one.
Not merely another online church or preacher.
She said she had found an online ministry that seemed different from the others she had listened to.
Naturally, the young lady asked which ministry.
The receptionist answered:
“PILGRIM OUTREACH MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL.”
For a moment, the young lady froze.
Thousands of miles from where she had once attended our church.
Sitting in a dentist's office.
Talking to a woman she had apparently never known before.
And suddenly—
there was our ministry's name.
She asked again:
“What ministry did you say?”
The receptionist repeated it.
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.
She couldn't quite remember the pastor's full name.
She remembered only that it was—
“James something.”
The young lady smiled and supplied the rest:
“James Langston?”
“Yes!”
Then came the obvious question.
“How did you know?”
And that's when two completely separate journeys suddenly intersected.
“I USED TO BE A MEMBER OF THAT CHURCH”
Imagine the receptionist's surprise.
The young lady explained that she hadn't simply heard of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.
She had been part of it.
She had attended the church for several years before relocating when her husband was reassigned.
What were the odds?
One woman had discovered the ministry online.
Another woman had known the ministry personally.
Thousands of miles away from where their stories began—
God allowed their paths to cross at a dentist's office.
Before everything was finished, they exchanged contact information.
They exchanged praise reports.
They talked about what God had done.
And an ordinary dental appointment became something neither woman could have planned.
SOMETIMES GOD LETS YOU PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN
That testimony stayed with me.
Because ministry can sometimes feel like sowing seed into an enormous field while seeing very little of what happens afterward.
You preach a message.
Post a devotional.
Write an article.
Upload a video.
Share a prayer.
Answer someone's question.
Send encouragement.
Support a missionary.
Give someone a Bible.
Pray for someone you've never met.
And then—
life moves on.
You may never receive a message.
Never see a comment.
Never hear a testimony.
Never know whether anybody was listening.
But silence does not mean nothing happened.
The seed may already be growing somewhere you cannot see.
THE INTERNET CHANGED THE SIZE OF THE PULPIT
There was a time when a pastor's voice generally traveled about as far as the walls of his church.
Today, a message preached in one place can be heard thousands of miles away within seconds.
A devotional written at a desk can reach another continent.
A prayer posted before breakfast can encourage someone struggling late at night on the other side of the world.
A Bible teaching can continue ministering while the person who posted it is asleep.
Technology has many dangers.
We have written about them.
But technology can also become an extraordinary tool for the Gospel.
The internet is neither inherently a pulpit nor inherently a cesspool.
What we put through it matters.
If darkness can travel through technology—
so can light.
If lies can go viral—
so can truth.
If hatred can cross borders—
so can the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
THAT IS WHY WE KEEP POSTING
Someone may occasionally wonder:
Why another blog post?
Why another prayer?
Why another Scripture?
Why another social-media message?
Why another video?
Why keep preaching online when the internet is already overflowing with content?
That dentist-office testimony provides part of the answer.
BECAUSE SOMEBODY IS LISTENING.
Maybe quietly.
Maybe without commenting.
Maybe without clicking “Like.”
Maybe without ever sending us a message.
Maybe from another state.
Maybe from another country.
Maybe somebody we'll never meet on this side of eternity.
But they are there.
And if one person encounters Jesus Christ because we kept the light burning—
it was worth it.
A LIGHT DOESN'T CALL ATTENTION TO ITSELF
There is an important distinction here.
We are not saying:
“Look how wonderful Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International is.”
God forbid.
A light exists to illuminate something else.
John the Baptist understood this beautifully.
Speaking of Christ, he said:
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” — John 3:30
That should be the heartbeat of every Christian ministry.
If people remember our ministry's name but never encounter Jesus, we have failed.
If they remember the pastor but not the Savior, we have failed.
If they admire our programs but never hear the Gospel, we have failed.
If our platform grows but Christ becomes smaller—
we have failed.
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International exists for one overriding purpose:
TO POINT PEOPLE TO JESUS CHRIST.
He is the Light.
We are reflections.
THINK ABOUT A MIRROR
A mirror has no light of its own.
Put it in total darkness and it cannot illuminate anything.
But position that mirror toward a source of light—
and suddenly it reflects what it receives.
That is what we want this ministry to be.
Not the Source.
The reflection.
Jesus said:
“I am the light of the world...” — John 8:12
Therefore, when somebody sees compassion through us—
let them see Jesus.
When somebody receives encouragement—
let them see Jesus.
When someone receives food—
let them see Jesus.
When a student receives assistance—
let them see Jesus.
When a hurting person receives prayer—
let them see Jesus.
When a family receives help—
let them see Jesus.
When someone thousands of miles away encounters something different about an online ministry—
let what they are sensing ultimately lead them to Jesus.
AND THIS TESTIMONY ISN'T ONLY OURS
This is where I want everyone who prays for, supports, shares, follows or gives to Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International to understand something.
YOU WERE IN THAT DENTIST'S OFFICE TOO.
Not physically.
But spiritually, you were part of the journey that caused the ministry to reach that receptionist.
Every prayer matters.
Every share matters.
Every word of encouragement matters.
Every gift matters.
Every person who says:
“Lord, bless that ministry and help them reach somebody today”
becomes part of what God is doing.
Paul explained ministry partnership beautifully:
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6
Different people.
Different responsibilities.
One God producing the increase.
YOU MAY NEVER KNOW WHAT YOUR $10 DID
This is something donors sometimes don't realize.
You give $5.
$10.
$25.
$50.
$100.
Perhaps considerably more.
You see a transaction confirmation.
And that's the end of what you see.
But it may not be the end of what God does.
Your gift helps keep a website online.
Supports outreach.
Helps provide food.
Helps purchase ministry materials.
Supports missions.
Helps us reach another community.
Helps us continue preaching the Gospel.
And somewhere down the line—
someone hears.
Someone reads.
Someone receives.
Someone prays.
Someone believes.
Someone tells somebody else.
Then that person tells another.
And suddenly the thing you thought was small has traveled farther than you ever imagined.
THE PERSON WHO SHARED THE POST MAY NEVER KNOW EITHER
Perhaps you couldn't give financially.
But you clicked Share.
Don't underestimate that.
The person who originally discovered our ministry online may have encountered it because somebody else shared something.
Then perhaps she shared it.
And someone else discovered it.
This is how light works.
One candle lights another without losing its own flame.
Then another.
And another.
And another.
Until darkness that once appeared overwhelming isn't quite so dark anymore.
“A CITY THAT IS SET ON AN HILL CANNOT BE HID”
Jesus didn't tell His followers to manufacture light.
He said:
“Ye are the light of the world.”
Then He explained what we are supposed to do with it:
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16
There it is.
Not:
“That they may glorify you.”
Not:
“That they may glorify your church.”
Not:
“That they may glorify your pastor.”
Not:
“That they may glorify your denomination.”
But:
“GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN.”
That is our desire.
WE DON'T KNOW WHO IS WATCHING
This testimony taught me something else.
Online ministry statistics can tell us many things.
Views.
Clicks.
Visitors.
Countries.
Engagement.
Followers.
Shares.
But statistics cannot fully measure impact.
A person can read something without clicking “Like.”
Someone can watch without commenting.
A struggling Christian can return to the same message several times without ever telling us.
A person considering suicide can read one sentence that causes them to hold on another night.
A discouraged missionary can encounter a prayer at exactly the right moment.
A person who hasn't prayed in twenty years can quietly whisper:
“God, are You still there?”
No analytics dashboard can adequately measure that.
Heaven can.
SOMEBODY MAY BE LISTENING RIGHT NOW
Perhaps that's you.
Maybe you didn't intentionally come looking for Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.
Maybe somebody shared this article.
Maybe an internet search brought you here.
Maybe you saw a post while scrolling.
Maybe you clicked because the title caught your attention.
Maybe you're thousands of miles away.
Perhaps we've never met.
But you are here.
And maybe—
just maybe—
God knew exactly where you would be when these words reached you.
So let me tell you what matters most.
Jesus Christ loves you.
Your life has value.
Your past does not have to determine your future.
Your sin can be forgiven.
Your brokenness does not frighten God.
Your questions don't intimidate Him.
Your tears haven't gone unnoticed.
And if you've wandered farther from God than you ever thought possible—
the road home is still open.
KEEP THE LIGHT BURNING
To our ministry family:
Don't become discouraged because you cannot see everything God is doing.
Keep praying.
Keep giving.
Keep sharing.
Keep witnessing.
Keep serving.
Keep believing.
Keep going.
There may be another receptionist somewhere.
Another young person.
Another family.
Another prisoner.
Another soldier.
Another sailor.
Another missionary.
Another lonely senior.
Another hurting teenager.
Another person sitting alone at 2:00 in the morning searching the internet for hope.
We don't know.
And that is precisely why—
WE KEEP THE LIGHT ON.
YOUR PRAYERS HELP KEEP IT BURNING
We cannot do this alone.
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International remains dependent upon people who believe in what God has called us to do.
We need your prayers.
Your faith.
Your encouragement.
Your sharing.
And yes—
your generous financial support.
Not so that we can build a name for ourselves.
Not so that people can say:
“Look at Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International.”
But so that one more person can say:
“I FOUND JESUS.”
That is the testimony we ultimately want.
ONE DENTIST'S OFFICE. TWO WOMEN. ONE REMINDER.
Think about it.
Two women.
Thousands of miles away.
One had been part of the ministry personally.
The other had discovered it online.
They met by what appeared to be coincidence.
And through their conversation, God reminded us:
The light is traveling.
Farther than we knew.
Into places we've never visited.
Reaching people we've never met.
And perhaps touching lives we'll never hear about until eternity.
That doesn't make us proud.
It makes us grateful.
It makes us humble.
And it makes us want to work harder while there is still daylight.
TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY
Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International may be a light set upon a hill.
But we know where the Light comes from.
Jesus Christ.
We are merely mirrors trying to stay pointed toward Him.
So if you've been blessed by this ministry—
to God be the glory.
If you've been encouraged—
to God be the glory.
If you've learned something—
to God be the glory.
If you've come back to Christ—
to God be the glory.
If you've found hope—
to God be the glory.
And if somewhere in this enormous world another person is discovering Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International right now—
our prayer is very simple:
LORD, PLEASE LET THEM SEE YOU.
Because someday websites will disappear.
Social-media platforms will change.
Algorithms will become obsolete.
Buildings will crumble.
Our names will eventually be forgotten.
But the Gospel we preach will remain:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son...” — John 3:16
So we will keep preaching.
Keep reaching.
Keep serving.
Keep shining.
One soul.
One family.
One community.
One nation at a time.
And every once in a while, perhaps God will allow us another little glimpse—a conversation in a dentist's office, a message from another country, an unexpected testimony—to remind us:
YOU NEVER KNOW HOW FAR THE LIGHT IS REACHING.
