A new book is nearing completion—one that began with a very simple burden:

What do we say to the person who still believes in God...but is finding it difficult to pray?

Not the theologian looking for another theological discussion.

Not necessarily the person searching for a detailed study of every kind of prayer.

But the ordinary person.

The tired mother.

The discouraged father.

The grieving widow or widower.

The young believer who doesn't know what to say.

The longtime Christian who remembers when prayer seemed easier.

The pastor who has spent so much time encouraging everyone else that he has quietly become weary himself.

The person sitting alone late at night wondering:

"Does God still hear me?"

"Why hasn't He answered?"

"Am I doing something wrong?"

"Why does heaven seem so quiet?"

"How do I keep believing when I don't understand?"

And perhaps the simplest question of all:

"How do I start praying again?"

This book is for you.

We're Not Bringing You Something New

One of the most important discoveries made while writing this book is that we aren't presenting some new revelation about prayer.

The truths are already there.

They've always been there.

Some readers have heard pieces of them in sermons.

Others remember them from Sunday school.

Some encountered them during Bible studies many years ago.

Others have read the Scriptures but never quite understood how all the pieces fit together.

So this isn't about discovering a "new" way to pray.

It's about returning to what has always been true.

Sometimes we simply need someone to walk beside us and help us remember.

That's what this book attempts to do.

Not preach at you.

Not lecture you.

Not condemn you.

Walk with you.

A Conversation Between Friends

Somewhere during the writing process, something unexpected happened.

The book stopped feeling like a book.

It became a conversation.

Imagine two friends walking down a long country road.

Sometimes they're talking.

Sometimes they're laughing.

Sometimes they're remembering.

Sometimes neither says anything because silence is enough.

Along the way, one friend notices the other's backpack has become terribly heavy.

So they stop.

They sit beside the road.

They open the backpack together.

And they discover things that have been carried far too long.

Unforgiveness.

Pride.

Doubt.

Disappointment.

Fear.

Questions.

Unanswered prayers.

Expectations.

Guilt.

Slowly...

one burden at a time...

the backpack becomes lighter.

Then the friends stand again.

And continue walking.

That's the atmosphere we've worked to preserve throughout this book.

Because sometimes weary people don't need another lecture.

They need someone willing to walk beside them.

We Will Not Overdrive the Flock

During the writing of this book, Genesis 33:13 became a beautiful picture of how we wanted to treat the reader.

Jacob understood that the children were tender and that some of the animals required special care. If they were driven too hard, the flock would suffer.

That principle became important to us.

Don't overdrive the flock.

Some people reading this book will be spiritually strong.

Others may barely be hanging on.

Some will have prayed faithfully for decades.

Others may not have prayed sincerely in years.

Some will arrive filled with faith.

Others will arrive with more questions than answers.

That's okay.

We're not measuring anyone's stride.

We're simply walking toward the Father together.

If you need to walk slowly...

we'll walk slowly.

If you need to stop beside the road...

we'll stop.

If you need to cry...

cry.

If all you can manage today is,

"Father...help me,"

then begin there.

He heard you.

No Traveler Left Behind

Another principle eventually emerged.

No traveler left behind.

Jesus spoke about a shepherd who had one hundred sheep.

When one wandered away, that one mattered enough to search for.

One.

That number has become increasingly important while writing this book.

Because if this book helps thousands of people, we'll rejoice.

If it helps hundreds, we'll rejoice.

If it helps ten, we'll rejoice.

But if somewhere...

somehow...

years from now...

one weary person picks up this book...

reads a few pages...

puts it down...

bows their head...

and whispers,

"Father...it's been a long time."

Then every page was worth writing.

Every conversation was worth having.

Every prayer was worth praying.

Because one traveler came home.

Faith When We Don't Understand

One of the chapters currently being completed is titled:

Faith When I Don't Understand — Faith Beyond Answers

Those words describe a place nearly every believer eventually reaches.

We pray.

We believe.

We wait.

And sometimes...

we still don't understand.

Faith doesn't mean pretending we have all the answers.

It doesn't mean denying pain.

It doesn't mean smiling when our hearts are breaking.

Sometimes faith simply says:

"Father...I don't understand this road, but I still trust You."

That is faith beyond answers.

Sometimes God changes the circumstances.

Sometimes He strengthens us while the circumstances remain.

Sometimes the storm becomes calm.

Sometimes the miracle is discovering that the Father can give His child peace while the storm is still raging.

And sometimes...

the greatest answer to our questions isn't an explanation.

It's His presence.

One Word Changed Everything

During the writing process, one word eventually emerged that helped explain what this entire project was becoming.

Care.

There is a difference between concern and care.

We can be concerned about someone from a distance.

Care moves closer.

Concern notices the weary traveler.

Care sits beside them.

Concern asks whether they're okay.

Care stays awhile.

And genuine care doesn't stop when the final chapter ends.

That's why this book isn't written for one ethnicity.

One race.

One nationality.

One denomination.

One economic class.

One age group.

Or one particular kind of Christian.

It is written in the spirit of:

"Whosoever will..."

Because weariness has no nationality.

Heartache has no denomination.

Questions have no economic status.

And the Father's invitation has never been restricted to one group of people.

The Road Home Is Still Open

Perhaps you're reading this announcement and realizing that somewhere along your own journey...

you became tired.

Maybe prayer isn't what it once was.

Maybe disappointment slowly silenced your voice.

Maybe you've wondered whether God grew tired of hearing from you.

He hasn't.

Perhaps you need to hear this before the book is ever released:

The Father is still listening.

You haven't prayed too little.

Waited too long.

Asked too many questions.

Or wandered so far that His grace cannot reach you.

The Father's house is still there.

The porch light is still burning.

The Shepherd still knows the road.

And the invitation remains:

Come home.

Not when you've figured everything out.

Not when you've found the perfect words.

Not when your faith becomes stronger.

Come now.

And if prayer seems difficult...

pray anyway.

Whisper if necessary.

Cry if necessary.

Sit silently before Him if that's all you can manage.

But don't stop coming.

Because the Father you are trying to reach...

has never stopped reaching for you.
