America, It Is Time to Pray

From the White House to Our House—Our Nation Needs God

"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority..." — 1 Timothy 2:1–2

There are moments when Christians need to speak.

There are moments when Christians need to act.

And there are moments when God's people simply need to get on their knees and pray.

This is one of those moments.

America has problems that legislation alone cannot solve.

Families are hurting.

Communities are concerned about safety.

People are worried about jobs, prices, health care, education, and what tomorrow may bring.

Our elected officials face difficult decisions.

Our military personnel remain prepared to answer whenever duty calls.

First responders walk into situations from which everyone else is trying to escape.

Teachers enter classrooms carrying responsibilities that extend far beyond textbooks.

Doctors, nurses, caregivers, and other health care workers continue serving people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

And beyond our borders, conflict and instability remind us how quickly events in one part of the world can affect millions elsewhere.

So today, instead of simply complaining...

Instead of pointing fingers...

Instead of arguing endlessly about who is responsible...

Let us pray.

Pray for America

America needs prayer.

Not merely when tragedy strikes.

Not merely during elections.

Not merely when the economy struggles.

Not merely when war threatens.

America needs prayer every day.

Scripture declares:

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD." — Psalm 33:12

Our greatest need is not ultimately Republican or Democratic.

It is not conservative or liberal.

It is spiritual.

We need righteousness.

We need wisdom.

We need compassion.

We need repentance.

We need truth.

And above everything else, we need God.

Let us pray that America will remember Him.

Pray for Our President and National Leaders

Scripture does not tell Christians to pray only for leaders with whom we agree.

It tells us to pray for all who are in authority.

So let us pray for the President of the United States and those serving throughout the executive branch.

Pray for wisdom.

Pray for discernment.

Pray for humility.

Pray that decisions affecting millions of lives will be made carefully and responsibly.

And pray that those entrusted with authority will remember that human authority is never absolute.

Ultimately, every leader answers to God.

Pray for Congress

Pray for the United States Senate.

Pray for the United States House of Representatives.

Behind the political parties, television interviews, committee hearings, disagreements, and votes are human beings carrying enormous responsibilities.

Pray that they will seek wisdom rather than simply political advantage.

Pray that truth will matter more than popularity.

Pray that cooperation will be possible where cooperation serves the good of the nation.

And pray that justice, integrity, and concern for ordinary Americans will guide their decisions.

Pray for the United States Supreme Court

The decisions of the Supreme Court can influence American life for generations.

Let us therefore pray for the Justices.

Pray for wisdom.

Pray for integrity.

Pray for impartiality.

Pray for careful judgment.

Pray that they will understand the tremendous responsibility entrusted to them as they interpret the Constitution and consider cases affecting individuals, families, communities, religious liberty, government, and society.

Whether we agree with a particular ruling or disagree with it, Christians should never underestimate the importance of praying for those entrusted with such consequential decisions.

Pray About Iran and Global Conflict

Our prayers must also extend beyond America's borders.

Conflict involving Iran and instability throughout the Middle East remind us that war is never merely about governments, military strategies, weapons, and maps.

There are people underneath those headlines.

Mothers.

Fathers.

Children.

Soldiers.

Families.

People who simply want to live another day.

Pray for restraint where restraint is possible.

Pray for wisdom among national leaders.

Pray against unnecessary escalation.

Pray for innocent civilians caught in the middle.

Pray for humanitarian workers.

Pray for Christians and other vulnerable communities living amid uncertainty.

And pray that doors will remain open for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our prayers should never stop at national borders.

God loves the Iranian soul just as surely as He loves the American soul.

Pray for the United States Military

Remember the men and women wearing the uniform of our nation.

Some are thousands of miles from home.

Some are aboard ships.

Some are deployed in places their families may know little about.

Some are standing watch while America sleeps.

Pray for their protection.

Pray for their commanders.

Pray for wisdom before force is used.

Pray for those who may be called into harm's way.

Pray for military families waiting at home.

Pray for veterans carrying wounds—visible and invisible—from years of service.

And pray that our nation never forgets the human cost borne by those whom we ask to defend it.

Pray for Our First Responders

When danger comes, somebody runs toward it.

Police officers.

Firefighters.

Emergency medical personnel.

Dispatchers.

Rescue workers.

They encounter accidents, fires, violence, tragedy, medical emergencies, and situations most of us hope never to experience.

Pray that God protects them.

Pray for sound judgment in split-second decisions.

Pray for their families.

Pray for their emotional and spiritual well-being.

And pray that our communities will find ways to pursue both justice and safety while recognizing the dignity of every human life.

Pray for Our Communities

Sometimes we become so focused on Washington and world affairs that we overlook the street outside our own front door.

Pray for your neighborhood.

Pray against violence.

Pray for law enforcement.

Pray for community leaders.

Pray for young people who are being pulled toward gangs, drugs, crime, or hopelessness.

Pray for people living alone.

Pray for those without adequate housing.

Pray for the elderly.

Pray for those struggling quietly whom nobody seems to notice.

Revival may affect a nation, but it often begins when somebody starts praying for the people living right around them.

Pray for Health Care Workers

Pray for doctors.

Nurses.

Paramedics.

Caregivers.

Hospital staff.

Medical technicians.

Mental health professionals.

Researchers.

And everyone who serves the sick and suffering.

Ask God to give them compassion when they are tired, wisdom when decisions are difficult, and strength when the burden becomes heavy.

And pray for patients and families awaiting diagnoses, undergoing treatment, recovering from illness, or sitting beside someone they love.

Pray for Our Schools

Our children spend a tremendous portion of their formative years in classrooms.

Pray for them.

Pray for teachers.

Pray for principals.

Pray for school boards.

Pray for counselors.

Pray for bus drivers and support staff.

Pray for parents.

Ask God to protect our schools from violence.

Pray against bullying.

Pray for children who feel forgotten or unwanted.

Pray that education will prepare young people not merely to earn a living, but to become responsible men and women capable of contributing something good to society.

Pray for America's Families

Strong nations cannot remain strong while families continually collapse.

Pray for marriages.

Pray for fathers.

Pray for mothers.

Pray for children.

Pray for single parents.

Pray for grandparents raising grandchildren.

Pray for reconciliation where relationships have fractured.

Pray for homes struggling with addiction, anger, financial pressure, or unforgiveness.

The enemy understands something the Church must never forget:

If you weaken the family, eventually you weaken the community. And if you weaken enough communities, eventually you weaken the nation.

May God strengthen our homes.

Pray for the Economy and Those Looking for Work

Economic statistics are numbers.

But unemployment has a face.

It is the father wondering how he will pay the mortgage.

The mother stretching groceries until payday.

The recent graduate sending application after application.

The worker whose position disappeared.

The small-business owner trying to keep the doors open.

Pray for those searching for employment.

Pray for businesses making difficult decisions.

Pray for entrepreneurs.

Pray for workers.

Pray for responsible economic leadership.

And pray that prosperity never becomes America's god.

Money can purchase many things.

It cannot purchase peace with God.

Above All—Pray for the Gospel

There is one prayer that must weave through every other prayer we offer.

Lord, let the Gospel go forward.

Across America.

Across the Philippines.

Across Asia.

Across Iran and the Middle East.

Across Africa.

Across Europe.

Across Latin America.

Across every island, village, city, neighborhood, military installation, prison, hospital, school, and home where God opens a door.

Jesus said:

"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." — Mark 16:15

Governments will change.

Presidents will come and go.

Congresses will change.

Supreme Court Justices will eventually change.

Economies will rise and fall.

Wars will begin and end.

Generations will come and generations will pass.

But the Gospel remains.

Jesus Christ still saves.

The Cross still stands.

The tomb is still empty.

Grace is still available.

And whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall still be saved.

Perhaps God Is Waiting for Us

It is easy to look toward Washington and ask:

"Why don't they do something?"

Perhaps heaven is asking the Church:

"Why don't you pray?"

We cannot personally solve every international conflict.

We cannot personally repair the economy.

We cannot personally protect every neighborhood.

We cannot personally heal every family.

But every Christian can pray.

And prayer places matters beyond our ability into the hands of the God for whom nothing is impossible.

Let Us Pray

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today on behalf of America and our world.

Forgive us for our sins. Forgive our pride, selfishness, division, hatred, greed, indifference, and our tendency to seek every solution except You.

We pray for our President and all who serve in positions of national leadership. Give them wisdom, humility, courage, and discernment.

We pray for the United States Senate and House of Representatives. Help those serving there to seek what is right rather than merely what is politically advantageous.

We pray for the Justices of the United States Supreme Court. Grant them wisdom, integrity, and sound judgment.

We pray for the situation involving Iran and for conflicts throughout the world. Protect innocent lives. Restrain evil. Give leaders wisdom. Bring peace where peace is possible, and comfort those experiencing the horrors of war.

We pray for America's military personnel and their families. Protect those serving at home and abroad.

We pray for police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, dispatchers, and every first responder.

We pray for doctors, nurses, caregivers, and health care workers.

We pray for teachers, students, administrators, and America's schools.

We pray for our neighborhoods and communities.

We pray for marriages and families.

We pray for those struggling financially.

We pray for the unemployed and underemployed. Open doors of opportunity and provide for their needs.

We pray for those who are sick.

Those who are grieving.

Those who are lonely.

Those who are frightened.

Those who have almost given up hope.

And Father, above everything else, we pray for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Open doors that no man can shut.

Send laborers into the harvest.

Empower missionaries.

Strengthen pastors.

Revive churches.

Save the lost.

Restore the backslider.

Set captives free.

And let the name of Jesus Christ be proclaimed throughout America and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.

We cannot fix this world ourselves.

But we know the One who can change hearts.

So today we place our nation, our leaders, our military, our communities, our families, and our world into Your hands.

In Jesus' precious name, Amen.

One Final Thought

America does not need Christians who only complain about America.

America needs Christians who pray for America.

Our leaders need prayer.

Our military needs prayer.

Our first responders need prayer.

Our schools need prayer.

Our families need prayer.

Our communities need prayer.

Our world needs prayer.

And millions of souls still need to hear that Jesus Christ saves.

So wherever you are reading this...

Stop for a moment.

Call someone's name before God.

Pray for your neighborhood.

Pray for your leaders.

Pray for someone serving in uniform.

Pray for someone struggling.

Pray for America.

Pray for the nations.

And then pray the prayer Jesus Himself told His disciples to pray:

"The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth labourers into His harvest." — Matthew 9:37–38

Church, let us pray.
