A PRAYER FOR EVERY HURTING HEART
For the Broken, the Afraid, the Bound, the Forgotten—and Those Who Have Almost Given Up
Somewhere, someone is hurting today.
Somewhere, someone is crying where nobody can see the tears.
Someone is frightened about tomorrow.
Someone received news from a doctor they never expected to hear.
Someone is sitting behind prison walls wondering whether life can ever be different.
Someone has lost a home, a livelihood, a relationship, a loved one—or seemingly everything.
Someone is fighting an addiction that promised relief but became a prison.
Someone keeps trying and failing and has begun believing, “I can't do anything right.”
Someone has sinned so many times that they wonder whether God could possibly want them anymore.
And somewhere, perhaps right now, someone is considering ending their life because the pain has convinced them there is no tomorrow worth waiting for.
This prayer is for you.
Wherever you are, whatever has happened, whatever you have done, and however dark this moment appears:
Please stay.
There is still hope.
There is still tomorrow.
And there is still a God Who hears prayer.
Let Us Pray
Father,
We come before You today in the Name of Jesus Christ, carrying people we know and millions we will never meet.
They are near and far.
Some are surrounded by family, yet feel completely alone.
Some have nobody.
Some are hurting physically.
Some are hurting emotionally.
Some are hurting spiritually.
And some have been hurting for so long that they no longer remember what it feels like not to hurt.
Father, please find them where they are.
Walk into hospital rooms.
Walk into prison cells.
Walk into rehabilitation centers.
Walk beneath bridges and into shelters.
Walk into homes where families are struggling.
Walk into bedrooms where someone is crying behind a closed door.
Walk into places where drugs are being used because someone desperately wants the pain to stop.
Walk into the life of the person staring at bills they cannot pay.
Walk into the heart of the mother worried about her children.
Walk into the thoughts of the father wondering how he will provide.
Walk beside the widow and widower learning how to live with an empty chair.
Walk beside those displaced by war, disaster, poverty, violence, flooding, fire, persecution, or circumstances they never imagined facing.
Lord, go where we cannot go.
And where Your people can go, give us the courage to go.
Father, Remember the Sick
We pray for those whose bodies are hurting.
For those awaiting test results.
For those undergoing treatment.
For those living with chronic pain.
For those preparing for surgery.
For those whose doctors have exhausted their options.
For those who are frightened by words such as cancer, terminal, incurable, or nothing more can be done.
You are still God.
Give doctors wisdom.
Give nurses compassion.
Give caregivers strength.
Give families peace.
And according to Your sovereign will, Lord, stretch forth Your healing hand.
Remember Those in Prison
Father, remember those behind bars.
Some are guilty.
Some maintain their innocence.
Some made one terrible decision.
Some made many.
But prison walls cannot keep You out.
Remind them that while consequences may remain, redemption is still possible.
Save souls behind those walls.
Restore minds.
Break cycles.
Reconcile families where reconciliation is possible.
Raise up testimonies from prison cells declaring:
“Jesus Christ found me here.”
Remember Those Bound by Addiction
Lord, we pray for the person who said, “Just once,” and discovered that once became again and again.
For those bound by alcohol.
Drugs.
Opioids.
Methamphetamine.
Cocaine.
Pornography.
Gambling.
And every other destructive dependency and compulsion that has taken control of someone's life.
Break chains, Father.
But do more than remove the substance—heal the wound beneath the addiction.
Where there is trauma, bring healing.
Where there is loneliness, bring community.
Where there is shame, bring grace.
Where professional treatment is needed, give them courage to seek it and place trustworthy people around them.
Let today become someone's first day toward freedom.
Remember Those Bound by Sin
Father, we do not divide humanity into “good sinners” and “bad sinners.”
We all need grace.
For the liar.
The adulterer.
The thief.
The bitter.
The violent.
The proud.
The sexually immoral.
The hateful.
The unforgiving.
The religious hypocrite.
The rebellious.
The secret sinner whose public appearance hides a private bondage.
And everyone who knows, deep inside, “Something in my life must change.”
Lead us to repentance.
Not merely regret.
Not merely fear of consequences.
But genuine repentance that turns toward Jesus Christ.
Your Word declares:
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” — John 8:36
Jesus, set captives free.
Remember the Person Who Cannot Seem to Get Anything Right
Lord, someone reading this feels like a failure.
Every decision seems wrong.
Every opportunity seems to disappear.
Relationships fall apart.
Plans collapse.
Doors close.
They compare themselves with everyone else and conclude:
“Maybe I'm the problem.”
Father, silence the lie that a difficult season determines a person's worth.
Give them wisdom to acknowledge mistakes without allowing mistakes to become their identity.
Help them learn.
Help them grow.
Help them try again.
And when necessary, give them enough humility to ask someone for help.
Father, Remember Those Who Have Lost Everything
Some people have watched years of work disappear in minutes.
Homes destroyed.
Businesses gone.
Possessions washed away.
Savings exhausted.
Families displaced.
Loved ones buried.
Dreams shattered.
They do not need clichΓ©s.
They need help.
They need compassion.
They need people willing to stand beside them after everyone else has gone home.
Father, provide.
And make us part of Your provision.
And Lord, Especially Remember the One Thinking About Suicide
Father, right now, someone may believe death is the only remaining escape from pain.
Please interrupt that thought.
Put someone in their path.
Cause a telephone to ring.
Send a friend.
Send a relative.
Send a pastor.
Send a counselor.
Send a doctor.
Send an emergency responder.
Send somebody.
And give that hurting person enough strength for one more decision:
Tell someone.
Not tomorrow.
Now.
Help them step away from anything they could use to harm themselves and move toward another person.
Let them say the words:
“I'm thinking about hurting myself, and I need you to stay with me.”
Father, remind them that they do not have to solve the rest of their life tonight.
They only need to stay.
One minute.
Then another.
One hour.
Then another.
One day.
Then another.
Please stay.
Pain can change.
Circumstances can change.
Treatment can help.
People can help.
Tomorrow can look different from today.
And while they may not be able to believe that right now, let somebody else believe it for them until they can believe again.
Remember Those Who Have Lost Faith
And finally, Father, we pray for perhaps the quietest group of all.
Those who have stopped believing.
Some prayed and nothing seemed to happen.
Some trusted people who betrayed them.
Some were hurt by churches.
Some watched someone they loved die.
Some experienced something so devastating that they quietly concluded:
“God, if You were there, why didn't You stop it?”
Father, we will not condemn them for asking.
Meet them in their questions.
Meet them in their anger.
Meet them in their disappointment.
Meet them in their silence.
When they cannot reach toward You, reach toward them.
When they cannot pray, let this prayer stand in the gap.
When they cannot believe, surround them with people who will believe with them.
When they cannot see tomorrow, give them enough light for today.
And when they whisper,
“God, are You still there?”
Somehow, through Your Word, through another person, through Your Spirit, or through circumstances only You could arrange, remind them:
“I am.”
Father, Make Us Part of the Answer
Lord, do not allow us to pray this prayer and then ignore the hurting person standing beside us.
Open our eyes.
Make us listeners.
Make us encouragers.
Make us helpers.
Make us givers.
Make us willing to sit beside someone when we do not know what to say.
Teach us that sometimes ministry is not preaching a sermon.
Sometimes ministry is answering the telephone.
Sometimes ministry is buying groceries.
Sometimes ministry is visiting a prisoner.
Sometimes ministry is driving someone to treatment.
Sometimes ministry is helping someone find professional care.
Sometimes ministry is sitting beside a hospital bed.
And sometimes ministry is simply saying:
“I'm here. You're not facing this alone.”
Father, there is more pain in this world than any one ministry can reach.
But we can reach someone.
So send us to that someone.
And send someone to the person who needs them today.
We place the hurting, confused, worried, sick, imprisoned, addicted, sinful, grieving, displaced, discouraged, hopeless, and despairing into Your hands.
And we pray especially for the person who almost gave up before finding these words.
Hold on.
This chapter of your life is not necessarily the final chapter.
There is still help.
There is still hope.
There are still people who care.
And above everything else:
Jesus Christ is still calling.
Father, help us help them.
One person.
One family.
One hurting heart.
One soul at a time.
In the mighty, merciful, compassionate Name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
