Fifty Years Ago, A Young Man Stepped Off the Bus
On June 4, 1976, a young man stepped off a bus at Recruit Training Command, San Diego, California. He was an E-1 Recruit assigned to Company 125. His Company Commander was ABH1 Walsh. His Adjutant was Airman Williams.
He had no idea where the journey would lead.
After boot camp came Radioman "A" School in San Diego. Then the USS Dubuque (LPD-8), where he would serve from 1976 to 1980. Along the way, something even more important happened—he met a young woman in 1978 who would become his wife in 1979. More than four decades later, they are still walking life's journey together.
The years moved quickly.
Chief Petty Officer in 1988.
Chief Warrant Officer in 1991.
Limited Duty Officer in 1996.
Retirement from the United States Navy in 2003 after 27 years of service.
And today? That young recruit serves as Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, sharing the Gospel and helping families throughout the Philippines and Asia.
June 4, 2026, marks 50 years to the day since that journey began.
Fifty years sounds like a lifetime. Yet when I look back, it feels like only yesterday.
What have I learned?
Opportunity rarely arrives wrapped in certainty.
Dedication matters.
Patience matters.
Resilience matters.
Sacrifice matters.
Faith matters.
Love matters.
The rewards worth having seldom come quickly, and the most important things in life are often built one day, one decision, and one step at a time.
I have learned that success is not measured merely by rank, position, title, or accomplishment. It is measured by the lives you touch, the people you love, the character you build, and the legacy you leave behind.
If there is one lesson I would pass on to younger generations, it is this:
Don't quit.
Keep moving forward.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Keep believing.
The road may be longer than you expect, but God is faithful.
Fifty years ago, a young recruit stepped off a bus.
Only God knew where the journey would lead.
