📖 DAILY DEVOTIONAL — AUGUST 17, 2026
SEEK FIRST HIS KINGDOM
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Matthew 6:33
Today is a day of thanksgiving, reflection, and celebration.
On August 17, 1958, in El Campo, Texas, a baby boy was born to Velma Langston in a small hospital called Nightingale. No one looking into that infant's face could have known the roads God would eventually lead him down.
His name was James Langston.
At age 14, he made the most important decision of his life: he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour.
Everything that followed began there.
Military service. Marriage and family. Pastoral ministry. Mission fields. Preaching. Writing. Evangelism. And eventually a burden to carry the Gospel beyond familiar shores and across nations.
That young boy from El Campo could not see any of it.
But God could.
And therein lies today's lesson.
Matthew 6:33 does not tell us that we must understand God's entire plan before following Him. It tells us what belongs first:
His Kingdom. His righteousness. His will.
Then we trust Him with everything else.
Sometimes we become so concerned about where God is taking us that we overlook what He is asking us to do today.
We want the map.
God asks for trust.
We want to see the destination.
God says, “Follow Me.”
We want guarantees.
God asks for faith.
NEVER DESPISE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
You may look at your life today and wonder how anything significant could possibly come from where you are.
Remember the little hospital in El Campo.
Remember the 14-year-old boy who simply said yes to Jesus.
God has always been remarkably good at beginning great journeys in seemingly insignificant places.
Your present circumstances do not determine the limits of God's purpose for your life.
You do not need to see thirty years ahead.
You don't even need to see thirty days ahead.
You simply need enough faith to obey God today.
Seek Him.
Trust Him.
Follow Him.
And when tomorrow arrives, do it again.
Today, on his 68th birthday, we join Senior Pastor James Langston in thanking God—not merely for another year of life, but for the grace that has sustained him, the doors God has opened, the people encountered along the journey, and every opportunity given to serve the Kingdom of God.
And there is something else worth celebrating:
THE JOURNEY ISN'T OVER.
There are still prayers to pray.
People to encourage.
Books to write.
Sermons to preach.
Families to help.
Mission fields to enter.
Souls to reach.
And wherever God opens the next door, the answer remains the same:
“YES, LORD. I WILL GO.”
Perhaps that should be our answer today as well.
Whatever your age.
Whatever your past.
Whatever your circumstances.
Whatever God has placed before you—
Seek first His Kingdom.
Then trust Him with the journey.
🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me to seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness in every area of my life. When I cannot see the road ahead, teach me to trust the One who already knows where it leads. Help me never to despise small beginnings or underestimate what You can accomplish through one surrendered life. Thank You for Your faithful provision, sustaining grace, and unfailing love. May the years You give me be used for Your glory and the advancement of Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
TODAY'S THOUGHT
You don't have to see the entire road before saying yes to God. Seek Him first, take the next step, and trust Him with where it leads.
