68 YEARS OF LIFE—AND STILL SAYING, “HERE AM I, SEND ME”
Celebrating Senior Pastor James Langston—and Turning a Birthday Into an Opportunity to Reach the World
On August 17, 2026, Senior Pastor James Langston will celebrate his 68th birthday.
Sixty-eight years of life.
More than five decades of walking with the Lord.
Twenty-seven years of service in the United States Navy.
Decades of marriage, fatherhood, grandfatherhood, ministry, missions, preaching, writing, serving—and learning that God's plans often reach much farther than our own.
But if you ask Pastor James about the mission field today, he won't point to one particular city.
He won't point to one particular country.
He will tell you:
“MY MISSION FIELD IS THE WORLD.”
And at 68, he has no intention of changing that.
WHO IS JAMES LANGSTON?
James Langston is the founder and Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, a retired United States Navy veteran, author, husband, father, grandfather, pastor, missionary and servant of Jesus Christ.
His journey with the Lord began as a young man, and the call of God eventually carried him into ministry that would stretch far beyond anything he could have imagined in those early years.
His 27-year Navy career took him around the world and exposed him to different nations, cultures and people. After retiring from military service in 2003, the mission continued—but under a different Commander.
Over the years, Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International has ministered internationally, with extensive missionary involvement in Italy and the Philippines, while its online ministry allows the Gospel message to reach people far beyond the places its teams can physically travel.
Pastor James is also a prolific Christian author whose books address faith, prayer, Christian living, cultural concerns, suffering, leadership, sin, salvation, social issues and the challenges facing our world.
But titles such as Pastor, Missionary, Veteran and Author are not what ultimately define the mission.
There is a simpler explanation.
HE WANTS PEOPLE TO KNOW JESUS.
“I AM OBLIGATED”
Pastor James uses an interesting word when describing his responsibility to share the Gospel.
Obligated.
Not pressured.
Not forced.
Not burdened.
Obligated.
Because when you believe that Jesus Christ saved you, changed you, kept you and entrusted you with the greatest message humanity could ever hear, sharing that message becomes more than a religious activity.
It becomes a debt of gratitude.
Paul expressed something similar:
“I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.” — Romans 1:14
That is the spirit behind Pastor James' conviction.
He considers himself obligated to share the Gospel story with:
WHOEVER God sends.
WHEREVER God opens the door.
WHENEVER the opportunity comes.
HOWEVER God makes it possible.
A pulpit?
Preach.
A book?
Write.
A conversation?
Witness.
A blog?
Post.
Social media?
Share.
A missionary outreach?
Go.
A person sitting across the table asking about Jesus?
Tell them.
The method may change.
The mission doesn't.
68 DOESN'T MEAN FINISHED
Our culture often treats birthdays differently as we grow older.
When we're young, birthdays seem to announce everything still ahead.
Later in life, people sometimes begin counting what is behind.
But 68 doesn't have to mean winding down.
For Pastor James, it means:
God gave me another year. What can I do with it?
Another year to preach.
Another year to write.
Another year to pray.
Another year to encourage somebody.
Another year to help a family.
Another year to support a child.
Another year to strengthen the Church.
Another year to serve the Philippines.
Another year to reach the nations.
Another year to tell somebody:
JESUS SAVES.
There will eventually come a day when our earthly assignments are finished.
Until then—
there is work to do.

Romans 13:7 reminds us:

And that friend gives.
Then somewhere on the other side of the world, a child receives help.
A family hears the Gospel.

A discouraged person receives hope.

68 isn't merely an age anymore.
It becomes seed.
And seed has an interesting characteristic.
It doesn't look like the harvest it can eventually produce.

After 68 years, there are plenty of things a person can receive.
But some gifts eventually wear out.
Some break.

What if a child in the Philippines is helped?

68 YEARS—BUT THE STORY ISN'T OVER
Birthdays remind us that time moves quickly.
Psalm 90:12 says:
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Numbering our days doesn't mean merely counting them.
It means understanding their value.
We cannot keep yesterday.
We cannot guarantee tomorrow.
But we can give God today.
At 68, Pastor James' prayer remains essentially the same:
Lord, wherever You open the door, help me walk through it.
Whoever needs the Gospel—
send us.
Wherever there is an opportunity—
show us.
Whenever the moment comes—
make us ready.
However You choose to accomplish it—
USE US.

One more soul.
One more family.
One more community.
One more nation.
One more opportunity.
At 68 years old, the mission remains the world.
And as long as God keeps opening doors—
WE INTEND TO KEEP WALKING THROUGH THEM.
