When Silence Has a Price: The Choice We All Must Make
"First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me."
— Pastor Martin Niemöller
Some words transcend the era in which they were written. Pastor Martin Niemöller's famous poem is one of them.
Although penned in the aftermath of Nazi Germany, its central message reaches beyond one nation, one generation, or one political system. It speaks to every generation with the same sobering warning: silence in the face of injustice has consequences.
Too often we convince ourselves that if a problem does not affect us personally, it is not our responsibility. We become spectators instead of participants. We tell ourselves that someone else will speak up, someone else will get involved, someone else will make a difference.
History tells us otherwise.
The greatest tragedies in history were not carried out by evil people alone. They were also made possible when good people remained silent, looked the other way, or convinced themselves that what was happening was "none of their business."
As believers in Jesus Christ, we have been called to something higher.
Jesus declared:
"Ye are the salt of the earth... Ye are the light of the world."
— Matthew 5:13-14
Salt preserves. Light exposes darkness.
Neither accomplishes its purpose by remaining hidden.
Our responsibility is not to win every argument or to force people to agree with us. Rather, our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim truth, demonstrate Christ's love, defend those who cannot defend themselves, and point people toward the hope found only in Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Paul reminds us:
"Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
— Romans 12:21
That command requires action.
Throughout Scripture we find men and women who refused to remain silent.
Moses confronted Pharaoh.
Nathan confronted David.
Esther risked her life to save her people.
John the Baptist confronted King Herod.
The apostles declared, "We ought to obey God rather than men."
None of these individuals acted because it was easy. They acted because it was right.
Our generation faces its own challenges. While the circumstances differ from those of the past, the temptation remains exactly the same—to stay quiet when truth is unpopular, to remain comfortable while others suffer, or to ignore spiritual darkness because confronting it might cost us something.
The Church cannot afford to lose its voice.
Our communities need believers who will pray faithfully, serve compassionately, speak graciously, and live courageously.
Speaking out does not require hatred.
Standing for truth does not require bitterness.
Defending righteousness does not require abandoning love.
In fact, biblical truth and genuine love have always walked hand in hand.
Proverbs 31:8 tells us:
"Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction."
That verse reminds us that God expects His people to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.
This calling extends beyond words.
It means feeding the hungry.
Comforting the grieving.
Helping disaster victims.
Supporting missionaries.
Protecting children.
Standing beside the lonely.
Sharing the Gospel with those who have never heard it.
Encouraging those who have lost hope.
Every act of obedience becomes another light shining in a dark world.
Every prayer matters.
Every witness matters.
Every kind deed matters.
Every soul matters.
The question before us is not whether evil exists. Scripture has already answered that.
The real question is:
What will we do?
Will we remain comfortable observers?
Or will we become faithful servants of Christ who stand for truth, extend mercy, and proclaim hope while there is still time?
At Pilgrim Outreach Ministries International, our mission has never changed. We exist to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever God opens the door. Whether ministering in villages across the Philippines, encouraging believers through books and online resources, or sharing God's Word through electronic media, our desire is simple:
To be faithful.
Because one voice can inspire another.
One prayer can change a life.
One act of obedience can alter someone's eternity.
May history never say that we remained silent when God called us to speak.
May our lives instead testify that when the moment came, we stood—not for ourselves—but for Christ.
"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."
— James 4:17
